Patience is an essential element in communication. Without it, we cannot communicate effectively. In fact, many problems occur due to a lack of effective communication. I felt really connected to this episode because I don’t always communicate well, and the characters had the same difficulty. In this episode of Star Trek, Captain Picard struggles to communicate with the Tamarians, but since he remains calm and continues to act with patience, he is eventually able to learn some of their language, and as a result, is able to comfort their leader as he dies. If Captain Picard had not been patient, he could have created unnecessary hostility between two parties. In order to communicate, patience is imperative. to different planets, humans have a lot of problems communicating, so I can relate to Captain Picard’s difficulties. If we are not patient, we can get frustrated, like Ryker was getting frustrated. Captain Picard was very patient when the Tamarians and Star-Fleet first established contact through an open channel. They had no way to understand what the Tamarians were saying as they could not understand each other’s language. Though it would be easy to get frustrated, Captain Picard acted with patience. When Captain Picard is beamed down to the planet, he meets the Tamarian leader, Dathon, who says “Darmok and Jalad.” as he holds a knife out to Captain Picard.
Picard thinks that this is a challenge to fight, so he refuses the knife. Dathon then says “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.” and throws the knife at Picard’s feet, but Picard doesn’t pick it up. Dathon tries again, pointing at the knife in front of Picard, and saying “Temba. His arms wide.”. Picard then throws the knife back to Dathon. Dathon becomes frustrated, as he cannot make his meaning clear to Picard. He says to himself, “Shaka...When the walls fell.”. At this point I was frustrated because they couldn’t communicate. I felt like Picard was being cautious, like a captain should be, but I also felt that he wasn’t trusting instinct or the vibes that Dathon was giving off. I felt that Dathon wasn’t a threat to Picard, because if he wanted to hurt Picard he would have done it sooner. My gut feeling was that he was friendly. The next time we see Picard, he fails to light a fire, and Dathon chuckles. “Shaka. When the walls fell.” When the walls fell could signify defeat, because when the walls to a city fell it meant that they lost the fight, and in the context it would make sense as Picard failed to light the fire. Next, Dathon says “Darmok of Kanza. Jalad of the Kituay.” Could Jalad and Darmok signify Picard and Dathon? Did Kanza and Kituay signify where Picard and Dathon came from? connections, and responds with “Picard of the Federation.” but Dathon doesn’t understand.
However, Picard is beginning to understand. I became really excited at this point, because I was starting to piece together the Tamarian language. Later, when Dathon notices that Picard
is cold, he holds out a stick alight with fire, hurls it to Picard and says, “Temba.”. Picard guesses that this means fire, but Dathon adds, “Temba. His arms wide.”. Picard tries to unearth what this could mean, but gives up on the meaning. He simply thanks Dathon. I felt disappointed because Picard was so close to understanding some of the Tamarian language, and didn’t quite get it. When Picard wakes up, Dathon is gone. Picard decides to go through Dathon’s personal items at the campsite. Dathon is nowhere to be seen, but soon emerges shouting, “Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra!”. Dathon shoves a knife into Picard’s hands, and at this point I felt worried because Dathon seems to be very concerned. I think thought that perhaps a dangerous native of the planet would make itself known? Dathon says, “Temba! His arms wide!” Picard still thinks that Dathon wants to fight him. All of a sudden, there is a roar, and Picard takes the knife from Dathon. They only see flickers of the monster’s image, and then it disappears again. Picard believes they should retreat from the monster. Dathon ignores the suggestion to retreat. I was very nervous at this point, because no one had been injured yet and that made me believe that there must be an injury in the near future. Dathon adds, “Shaka. When the walls fell.” Does this mean that Dathon believes that they will lose? Or does he believe that retreating will cause them to lose? This time, Picard starts to understand: he realises that “Shaka. When the walls fell.” might symbolize a failure. While they face the creature, Dathon says “ Uzani. His army at Lashmir. His army. With fist open. His army. With fist closed.”. While watching this scene, I am very confused, and I really want to know what this means. Then, Picard realizes that this means a trap! It is a strategy to lure the enemy in. This is the point where Picard realizes that they speak in metaphors. Dathon exclaims “Sokath. His eyes uncovered!”. “His eyes uncovered” must mean that Picard can see now, and he understands. Suddenly, Picard starts to beam up, but there is not enough energy to fully beam him up. While he is stuck semi-beamed up, the monster is beating Dathon up. The Enterprise crew cannot beam Picard up fully and they are forced to release Picard. He is just in time to see the monster disappear, leaving behind a very battered Dathon. “Shaka.”. says Dathon, and Picard finishes “When the walls fell.” Dathon then proceeds to pass out. At this point I was worried that the Tamarians would think that Picard killed Dathon and that would start a war. However, I was happy that Picard was able to finish Dathon’s sentence. Dathon then says to Picard, “Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra.” Picard wants to know more, so he remembers that “Temba” may mean “give”. He asks Dathon “Temba. His arms wide. Darmok.”, and while he does not speak the language well, Dathon understands. He replies “Darmok. On the ocean.” Picard thinks about the meaning of this. He recognizes that this means “alone”, as in being isolated. At the same time that Picard is realizing this, I remember that my mother has a book called “No man is an Island”, and this helped me to understand. If no man is an island, it means that no man is entirely independent and that he isn’t truly alone, so if they are saying that they are on the ocean, like an island, it must mean that they are alone, isolated. Picard asks for still more information, and Dathon says “Tanagra on the Ocean. Darmok at Tanagra.”. At this moment I concluded that Picard must be Darmok. Darmok is at Tanagra, which must be the Planet they’re on, and their planet is “on the ocean”- isolated. The next phrase that comes is “The beast at tanagra.” which must be the monster they fought, which Picard also realizes. The two characters are finally able to communicate to some degree, though it is clear that Dathon will not leave the planet alive. Picard tells Dathon a story to comfort him as he dies. I was really happy when the two could finally communicate, I was very upset that Dathon died, but I understood that Dathon made a sacrifice for peace. Picard is beamed up just as the monster approaches him, as the crew has fired on the Tamarians. Picard, now back aboard the ship is able to communicate with the Tamarian First Officer, explaining what happened on the planet in their language, and informing them that their captain died. Captain Picard and Dathon both remained patient when trying to communicate with each other. Though it was difficult, they were eventually able to communicate on a very low level with each other. This allowed Captain Picard to comfort Dathon as he died, and prevent the possibility of the two parties becoming enemies. Picard even became part of their mythology. This was all possible due to the patience the two captains demonstrated. The two parties leave on peaceful terms, “maybe not new friends, but not new enemies.”
At this time, he set the tone for importance of effective communication which also set the tone and importance of effective communication for the success of the mission. He set his expectations and the seriousness of the issue for the team. He deliberately and consciously, empowered the teams to come up with the best solutions and then used those recommendations to make the best decisions when trying to save the space craft. He made it very clear how each person’s expertise was crucial for all of the others’
Key terms will be pointed out and highlighted, as well as described in relation to the examples extracted from the film. To begin with the film started out with a communication climate that was both tense and without verbal communication. This was mainly due to the variance in membership constructs of the characters involved. The character's included the brain Brian, Andrew the athlete, the criminal Bender, the princess Claire, and the basket case Allison. There was a great deal of interesting nonverbal communication taking place between these people. Their reactions and responses to each other demonstrated perceptual errors, which would be shown as the story progressed.
People endure every single day. Whether physical endurance, or mental endurance, everyone endures. My personal story of endurance is similar Mariam. I was sent to a summer long camp. Much like Mariam, everyday was a struggle in itself. The queasy, sick feeling of missing name, and not knowing what day will bring. When most people are faced with emotional, or physical endurance, they give up. But in the novel A thousand Splendid suns, by Khaled Hosseini, is a story about when you don’t give up. The novel is about a women named Mariam, borna a harabi, who is forced to marry a man she had never previously known. Mariam and Laila use patience, hope, and a strong mental will to endure everyday life.
Communication skills are important in professional negotiations and in personal life. This book discusses why we find some dialogue difficult, why we avoid it, and why we often address it ineffectively. Most important, the authors suggest methods for more effective, productive, and rewarding, interaction.
Petersen, I have realized there are many actions and changes I need to make in my life. One thing I struggle with the most is listening. In order to overcome this struggle, I am willing to incorporate the “talker-listener card” into my everyday conversations (Petersen, 2007, pp. 55-64). Using this tool will guide me in developing active listening skills. Whenever I have a disagreement with a friend or family member, I can utilize this card. According to Petersen (2007), “Using the TLC opens the door to more effective conversations when someone needs to ‘talk things over’” (p. 55). This method helps prevent screaming matches and forces people to respond calmly and rationally to disagreements they are
America got its first look of a program that would later become legendary on September 8, 1966 at 8:30 PM on NBC. America was never the same after Star Trek made its debut that night. The series did not receive the recognition it deserved until it was canceled after only three years and later returning in syndication. However, Star Trek was never an ordinary science fiction program to begin with. Comparison to other programs in this genre is difficult because Star Trek is certainly not an unconventional science fiction program- it is a science fiction program that displays America during 1960's. In fact, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, during an interview said, "I have no belief that Star Trek depicts the actual future, it depicts us, now, things we need to understand about that". Even David Gerrold, a writer for the series, writes in his book that "[t]he stories are about twentieth century man's attitudes in a future universe. The stories are about us". Naturally each episode does not make a social commentary, but all through the program, characters, themes, and it goes without saying, individual episodes make powerful reflections on sexism, feminism, as well as racism and improving race relations, all crucial social affairs during the late 1960's, and to a certain extent, social affairs of today.
First, when Data is persuading the colonists of Tau Cygna V, why does he not simply put their leader, Goshovin, on the communicator with Captain Picard? Goshovin says he won’t take orders from a “walking calculator” so why not call Picard? Also, Picard has all the crew combing through the treaty for a way out of his predicament. Why did Picard not originally ask Data, his super processor, to find a loophole before he left for Tau Cygna V? These are wonderful insights that I would have never even caught just from watching the episode. The podcasters also descuss the poor leadership displayed in the episode. For instance, Picard asks Starfleet for some back up with the evacuation, and it will be a few weeks before anyone can get out there to help them. But, Starfleet could have at least called the Sheliak to try and negotiate, instead however, they tell Picard that he must wait. A similar scene is seen when Data tries to communicate with Commander Riker about the situation. Riker tells Data he better figure out an answer, because fifteen thousand lives are counting on him. Thanks for the help, Commander
In part one, Petersen paints a picture of how he became interested in the topic of communication. He also describes major problems that all communicators have in common. Since he grew up in an environment full of communication deficiencies, it drove him to clarify issues that were common to all communicators. One of the foundational concepts to Petersen’s book is the nature of communication. Petersen called communication the lubrication designed to keep functions of stomach, heart, and head working separately and together. The stomach is the source of feeling words, the heart is the source of perspective words, and the head is the source of our perception of facts. Without these three elements working together, communication becomes deficient. In my experience and understanding how this concept of thinking and feeling affects mine and others people relationships goes a long way towards reducing disagreement and disconnection.
Communication is key in any relationship or job a person has. People must be able to communicate with others to get things accomplished. When communication isn’t good, a lot of problems may arise. That is why communication is such an important quality to have. Along with communication, adaptability is very important. Life doesn’t always work out as we plan so we must be able to handle anything that is thrown our way. Being able to adapt in all different situations or places is very helpful. It means a person can be thrown into anything and figure out what to do.
Majority of people would like to think that verbal communication is all that physician use; when that’s not the case. About ten percent of verbal communication is use; whereas ninety percent of nonverbal communication is being use explained in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostics Research. Using non-verbal communication determines the atmosphere that a physician and patients are in. Non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication. As a physician, it’s important to be engaged into what you’re asking a patient and the respond your giving to that patient. Using non -verbal communication such as facial expression, posture, and attitude can destroy the verbal communication that you’re having with that patient. An article by Elana Goodwin explains the importance of having good verbal and non-verbal communication with patients. In her article, she says,” Without communication, verbal, nonverbal, written, and otherwise, the medical field would be much less efficient and organized, and patients would suffer for it.” The non-verbal communication sets the tone for the verbal communication. For example, giving short answer to the question being ask by a patient would make that patient feel insignificant towards their physician. In my interview, she explains she seen one of her coworkers with bad non-verbal communication towards his patient that lead to the patient mood being change. Seeing the patient mood change lead that patients verbally stop communicating. Having a patient verbally stop communicating makes the job of physician even harder because we can’t no longer get enough information to help with the
Communication is a vital skill in all facets of life and all occupations. Before a person begins work, they first interview with the employer, where their communication skills are made apparent. These skills are vital to daily success in the workplace, whether they are used in direct communication or indirectly through the written word. It is crucial that the true meaning of what one person is trying to communicate to another is made perfectly clear the first time to ensure efficiency and success throughout all paths of life. There are also several situations for communication a person may experience. Communication situations can happen at any point in a person’s life, and it is imperative that a person is prepared for these situations when
Listening is how we interpret both the verbal and non-verbal messages sent by others. Active listening shows customers and employees that there is genuine concern for them and this can provide an opportunity for resolution of a problem and ease a negative situation. Here's an example of actively listening. A customer comes up to you and you can clearly see that he is upset, he mentions to you that he has been to two other stores looking for a particular product and goes into detail. (At this point you may want to nod your head to signify that you are following him). He called your store to confirm this product was in stock. He explained to the person over the phone that he was driving 30 minutes out his
When a person approaches you with conversation, they should always feel comfort knowing they are being listened to. I believe in this generation, even with myself, I sometimes have trouble giving my full attention in certain situations. These days people are so eager to let someone finish speaking so they can say what they want to say, rather than take in what they are being told and respond to it directly. This is something that I believe everyone, including myself should work on. Also, you should acknowledge what someone is telling you and clarify when you are confused in order to avoid making mindless errors which can lead to assumptions, or if you work in a medical work place even cause misdiagnoses or assessments. An example that many people may notice in their daily conversations of non-therapeutic communication is when one person is always changing topics during the conversation to something they’d rather talk about, or even judging others on their opinions especially before they can explain why they see something a certain way. This is a problem with communicating because it is more focused on one person rather than equal communication between two or more
Although, some people believe that information can pass properly during one session; this is far from the truth because to effectively communicate one must continue to reinforce the required information. Therefore, one must continually convey the knowledge that is important to the particular conversation. However, one must give time for the processing of the information and the returning of feedback. Because this response will tell the sender if the receiver received the data correctly or the process must continue until the receiver completely understands the given information (Wallace & Roberson, 2009).
Communication plays a key role to a leader. To have communication skills is to have the ability to express oneself clearly to others. It is extremely important as...
