Passion in writing for a Purpose When analyzing a written text there are a couple of things to look at. Does the author validate what they are writing? This question can be asked in order to figure out the different qualities of the essay itself. How does the author relay the massage? This is another question that can be asked from this analysis. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. explains his message very clearly in his text, The World House. Dr. King provides a lot of information to back his ideas and main thesis. He uses examples when he describes what he wants you to know. He is able to relay his message to the proper audience, which happens to be everyone in the world, but specifically to the African American people when he wrote the piece. He is able to set the tone and keep it from the beginning to the end. Dr. King is able to use audience, tone and language to relay his message. “A family unduly separated in ideas, culture, and interest, who, because we can never again live apart, must learn somehow to live with each other in peace.”(King, 338) The key here is to live with the people around you no matter what the differences between the people are. Whether the people in the house are of all different religions, cultures, ethnicities, and sexes, they must all be able to live together because they can not live without each other. He then mentions a citing from the Bible, where Moses is trying to free his people. “Let my people go,” says Moses, towards the pharaoh. (King, 340) This quote relates to his thesis and why he is writing this essay. Moses says this in order to let his people be free to live with everyone else and to be treated equal just like Keeno 2 everyone else was at the time. It was their God given quality to be able to be free without restraints. He says that we shall all be able to live together because we are supposed to. This is effective for his audience to understand because they know the Bible. Also, he is a preacher so they know that it comes from a credible source when he writes. It is an effective way to quote from the Bible in this case in order to show how he lives his life but even further to explain the power which comes from within him.
For this specific essay that I read it is based on the effects of language and its values. I happened to read the essay called, “Coming into Language,” by a convict named Jimmy Santiago Baca. He was born in 1952 as an Apache Indian with a Chicano relation. Ever since Jim was a young individual he has been in and out of jail and roamed the streets before knowing the basics of right and wrong. From an early age he didn’t ever get a chance to read or understand writings. Because of his poor upbringing he wasn’t able to gain access to knowledge, and did not know that dropping out of the 9th grade could hurt the rest of his life. In the essay, Baca mainly focused on writing the essay to explain his values and beliefs. I believe that Baca wanted to bring his thoughts across to the Chicano decent and to other jail inmates who didn’t understand their upbringings as well. There is clear reasoning for this, stated in the essay it mentions when Baca started showing the Chicano’s and other prisoners, they too were building an interest. The main purpose of this essay is to show that people can change and make a difference. From a person who was given nothing, and dealt with misery for his first half of his life was able to learn to read and write (then later on learned to write poems.)
Literature is written in many ways and styles. During his time, Frederick Douglass’s works and speeches attracted many people’s attention. With the amount of works and speeches Douglass has given, it has influenced many others writers to express themselves more freely. Though Douglass lived a rigorous childhood, he still made it the best that he could, with the guidance and teaching of one of his slave owner’s wife he was able to read and write, thus allowing him to share his life stories and experiences. Douglass’s work today still remain of great impact and influence, allowing us to understand the reality of slavery, and thus inspiring many others to come out and share for others to understand.
In accordance to the TRACE elements needed in a rhetorical situation, all five are present. The text includes a letter type written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. explaining why he is in a Birmingham city jail and the injustices he sees in the state of Alabama. The targeted audience is the eight fellow clergymen whom he is replying to after being presented a letter by those clergymen. The author of the letter is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself, a Baptist minister who preached nonviolence and was a pivotal leader in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Dr. King was the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a vital group that led many affiliations to peaceful marches and sit-ins throughout the civil rights movement. The main motivation for this letter is Dr. King’s own view of the injustices apparent in the Negro community and the intended actions the community is taking. Some constraints Dr. King faces...
The type of essay I chose to write for “The Book of Negroes” is a persuasive essay. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. uses the appeal of ethos from the beginning until the end of his speech. Because he was talking about African-American people, his own race that were dealing with racism and discrimination. However, Dr. King uses all the rhetorical devices in many ways to the best of his ability to gain the favor of his audience, and he made an unforgettable and effectively speech that made an impact on America. His main purpose was to fight for the equal rights of African-American people and in order for him to do that, he aided the civil rights to help his own race to improve their
Although John Steinbeck and Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote on essentially different topics, they both employed similar methods to implant themselves into their readers’ brains. Each author took advantage of repetition’s ability to hammer an idea into the human conscious. Steinbeck repeated the beginning of his sentences, and emphasized his subject: the American population. MLK Jr. repeated entire sentences and phrases, instead emphasizing his points. Additionally the tone used by each of the authors affected how the audience received those points. Ultimately by manipulating repetition, and tone, they were able to realize their individual purposes in very much the same way.
The book The Upside Down Kingdom by Donald B. Kraybill does an analysis of the bible in a different approach taken by readers. The main point of the book is to help readers understand Gods kingdom in a world that is turned upside down. Kraybill shows how upside down and radical the kingdom was in the first century Palestine and how it is the same in today’s society. In other words Kraybill illustrated the image that people who are at the top of the pyramids, the wealthy and the powerful, will be at the bottom of the pyramid in Gods kingdom if they are not humbled towards the poor and hungry. The book also clarifies the importance of practicing religious principle through the teachings of Christ in relation to the poor and suffering. In more detail one is not to seek the kingdom of heaven from above but rather find salvation of Christ through active compassion and empathy for those who are in need.
Every person on earth has feelings and beliefs that must be expressed, and, of course, there is no one, perfect means of doing this that works for everyone. For some, literature provides a perfect medium to depict exactly what they wish to communicate. As an example, Richard Wright's novel, Native Son, specifically conveys his opinion of the struggle blacks had to face (personified by Bigger Thomas, the main character of the story) in the white man's world of the early 1900's. To create a novel such as this, there are many concepts that must be strung together. Specifically for Native Son, the concepts were: the true nature of fiction, what it means to be black in America, and the challenge of writing the novel.

King uses a lot of literary devices that shows his oratorical style. He uses metaphors, anaphora, ethos, pathos, logos, and unique forms of figurative language. An example of Dr. King’s use of metaphors, he says, “One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” Consequently, African Americans do get their rights, but they had to face a lot of discrimination. An example of the use of anaphora is, “Let freedom ring…, for a bunch of times as he ends off his speech. Dr. King uses ethos, pathos, and logos to show the audience that they should have confidence within themselves to get their freedom. He uses ethos as, “One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.” Similarly, Dr. King uses his own ways of using pathos and
His words proved to have understanding on a Negros point of view to the social and political view of the time. King expressed what was happening in our nation. One of the greatest messages in the speech is that all people are created equal and, but at that very moment and time that was not the case in America. He also displayed simile and metaphor stated that the Negros was writing a bad
A critical analysis essay is an overall assessment of the author’s effectiveness in conveying his or her purpose. (Wilhoit 95) There are several different aspects of critique writing: analysis, evaluation, and explanation. The analysis requires you to break down the reading into essential parts, evaluation requires you to assess the quality of those various parts, and the explanation should link your judgments to specific aspects of the readings and make those connections clear and convincing to your reader. (97) Such writing requires you to know the criteria or certain expected aspects of a reading (such as thesis, support, genre, or style), and to use standards which are the basis for evaluating. (95) To do so, use your textbooks, especially Dialogues to remind you of what a good argument must include (Ch 1-2).
One example that I can give in regards to passion and love is personal, one about my own relationship with my husband of over 15 years. We first met when I was 21 and he was 23. Having both been in other relationships before we were not taking it too seriously. However the chemistry, and passion was obvious from the moment we laid eyes on one another. We honestly, thought this would be a fun casual fling. So, after a couple of times hanging out the feelings started to become stronger and stronger, we could no longer ignore the signs. The passion and love was something that neither of us has felt before, and after talking we decided what the hell, let’s give this a go. We’ve never been apart since. I have to say that even after all these years we still have that undeniable connection whenever we see each other. Not to say that there hadn’t been bad times, or times when our sex life was not like it
Writing is not the most fun thing to do in the world, especially when one is entering college. I am the least prepared when it comes to college writing and have always found writing very difficult. I was taught how to summarize articles and how to quote in highschool, but I definitely did not try my best which results in my poor writing. I blame myself for not getting the extra help I needed during high school, but I only learn from my mistakes. No matter how much I hate writing, I have to push myself to do the best I can because writing is very essential in any career.
Passion, in my definition of passion is something that I can do for life, and never be bored. My passions are over the floor, anything that is involved with art, food and learning about other’s culture. Something that is new to me, would motivating me spending a long period working on it. Such as designs, camera, theatre, cooking and traveling. It is very meaningful and important to me, because these things give me a type of comfortable and courage.
