Currently, we live in a world full of misery, poverty, injustice, inequality, and corruption that one feels claustrophobic in; it seems that in every corner of the world, there is no peace and happiness, and where there is, it appears to be momentary. Disaster looms every day on the news through forms of terrorism, racism, riots, police brutality, devastation from hurricanes, etc. Moreover, the news generally fails to cover the common issues, such as homelessness, hunger and starvation, poverty, etc. Little by little, our world is falling apart and people do not have solutions to repair it.
Many people aim to satisfy their desires at whatever cost, failing to appreciate what they have and the people around them. Often times, in developed countries, people hunger for money and all the “perks” that follow it. Not only has money has become the ultimate determination of success, but also happiness. I needed to start small, but think big; I found my answer through my passion for community service. I fell in love with the city of Paterson during my freshman year, working with the Relief Bus, an organization that works as a soup kitchen and a source to help people find jobs. Helping out with the Relief Bus every other Friday, I was given the opportunity to bring the homeless to Christ through learning their story and buying them meals. Although Paterson may be ranked the third worst place to live in the United States, these statistics failed to intimidate the vision God gave me. I envision Paterson as a city of potential where its recognized for its culture, values, and people, and not for its crime, violence, and poverty. I believe that God has been planting seeds in this city, and has been waiting for the right people to nourish and flourish
