I was excited about the first in class writing because I honestly enjoy writing. I find it way easier to get all my thoughts and ideas out when I’m writing them rather than saying them. I chose to write about the what makes parenting hard prompt. It was very easy for me because I just returned from a trip to visit my sister's family, and watched how this generation's family dynamic works, and what hinders my sisters parenting in some way. Thinking about a topic to write about is not always easy, and sometimes the process of writing can end up being difficult. Jennifer Jacobson discusses strategies to overcome the struggles that young writers can encounter while writing. I was interested in her book No More “I’m Done!” Fostering Independent Writers in the Primary Grades because I feel like as a future teacher this could be a frequent problem among students. From reading this book, I hoped that I would learn useful strategies that I could use to help students overcome their problems with writing. Ralph Fletcher’s story in the beginning of the introduction quickly grabbed my attention. Although the story was humorous, I found there to be a lot of truth in it. In the story, the young students realize that their teacher will take anything and make them write about it. It seems to be that the teacher does this so often, that the students are afraid to take joy in the simple things. The students don’t want to assigned another writing prompt. Fletcher then says that teacher need to be sure “not to get too evangelical about teaching writing.” I agree with this statement. ...eft for writer’s anxiety, my instructor explain to us that it was our writing assignment and that she would not do it for us. Generally speaking, her hard core style of teaching was in the least inviting, thus ended up being my favorite class. Most all of our class time was spent learning in a much assorted variety of styles that it was never boring. Each assignment plan and process brought me into the focus of writing allowing time to etch some learned values into my college agenda proving that my anxiety had been overcome and English 111 has made its mark on my life.
Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. As for what majority the prompts were, I cannot recall, however there were simple prompts. On the other hand, I do recall reading and having to write a page after each chapter of the books from the Hazelwood High Trilogy by Sharon Draper. As it was the first time I had ever had a formal writing assignment, I had writer’s block for a majority of sixth grade year. It was not until seventh grade when I was actually capable to write with limited restrictions. In seventh grade, my writing skills started to increase. I had more complicated assignments, and my new homeroom/English teacher (which I still think hated me deep down inside), essentially made reading dull but writing enjoyable. My teacher would make us read stories from the textbook and over analyze the text, which was where my love for reading began to dwindle. On the other hand, I started to like writing and the fun, easy prompts the class was given. The prompts were easy to write about and allowed me to make creative stories without numerous difficulties (before I actually learned the rules for formal writing). It was not until eighth grade when I finally began to learn the proper structure of a sentence, grammar, subject-verb agreement, and the restricting formal rules of writing. The question of the day is how was Barbara Bileks English composition class and how it helped me better myself as a writer. The class overall was a very informative experience and I feel as I learned a lot. Whenever the class started I considered myself a mediocre at best writer and thought that I would never improve. However, Ms. Bilek taught me to become a better writer by using many techniques that I did not know existed. In high school, we were not taught how to write academically because to them it did not matter. Anything that we had to say was just a paper for them to read and it could not change their minds or influence them in any way. College is different because the university is a research institute meaning that our work if deemed worthy, could be used throughout the university as an example of good quality work or as a new discovery for the modern world. This class helped me in three ways: improving my writing ability, helped in expressing my opinion, and making me a better person in todays society.
As we approached the due date for the first essay assignment, the professor asked us to share our introduction paragraph aloud to the class. Since I barely knew any of my peers, I found the aspect of participation terrifying at first. However after becoming familiar with my surroundings and fellow mates, I felt at ease sharing what I my thoughts and receiving positive feedback. Suchexposures have allowed me to figure out the proper writing techniques thus giving a chance for a better grade in any writing assignment. Group workshops were helpful, along with the assessment done between two other students, all of which helped me figuring out my mistakes and improve on those points later in my revision process. The assignment I am most proud of so far in the semester is my common application essay. The essay required me to dig into a part of my past that is very emotional for me. Even though this was hard the final part of the essay highlighted my achievements and for that reason writing this essay gave me a sense of accomplishment in my journey. My first student teaching experience took place in a seventh-grade English classroom during the second half of the school year. The first couple of weeks gave me an opportunity to observe both the teacher and the students participating in various writing activities. One assignment in particular asked the students to choose a topic of interest and write down on paper all the information that they already knew about this subject. A simple assignment, right? Sitting off to one side of the classroom, I decided to attempt the assignment. On the top of my paper I wrote the word "athletics". Under it, I wrote about why I chose the topic, what it meant to me and how it has played a crucial role in my life. Before I knew it, I had covered one and a half pages with information.

On the first day of class, I was not confident in my writing. I was in honors english last year, however, I did not do too well on essays. Being that I never received an A, I assumed my writing was not as good as it should be. Now, I earned a 6, almost 7, on the 9 point scale and am beginning to feel more confident. I do feel that I have been appropriately challenge this semester. I did not find any of the assignments to be too easy. I have definitely felt challenged this year, I have learned multiple techniques that I never knew prior to taking this class. As a whole, I am happy with the experiences I was provided in this class. The last essay I wrote, I was given the opportunity to meet with Mr. Perry after school one on one for help which was extremely beneficial. Also, I appreciate the fact that Mr. Perry reads our entire essay commenting on what went wrong or suggests ways to improve it. Revising essay really helps not only my grade, but also my overall understanding of what I did incorrectly. Overall, I am extremely happy I took this class and I continue to benefit in multiple ways.
To explain, many stressors and activities including extracurriculars or a struggling home life preoccupy writers, especially around the age of high school students. When students are already stressing over these aspects of their life, they become extremely drained of energy and have no fuel to write a supposedly daunting paper. The task at hand suddenly becomes more significant than needed and the student loses the spark to begin the essay with. In like manner, when creativity is absent either in the guidelines or the student, writing a paper is as enticing as visiting the dentist. Creativity is a main source of the want to write for students. The loss of freedom in writing makes a student feel as if an unsettling and intimidating duty shackles them. Moreover, teachers require students to create essays on certain ideas and topics. If the writer does not connect to the topic assigned, the will to write diminishes. Without a relationship between the topic and writer, an essay is uncompleted. When the desire to write is nonexistent, students tend to not complete an
