Freshman student Elizabeth Langen stated, “I think a huge factor in the fact that people procrastinate is they’re afraid of failing so they just avoid the problem until they can’t anymore”. When students experience this fear, they often find an opportunity to avoid the task at hand instead of facing their psychiatric problem. Nonetheless, the fear of success also restrains writers from their full potential. Some students believe if they work hard and efficiently towards an assignment that the process will never end and they will lose the ability to relax and have fun. Well-written essays also have the potential to increase expectations of others which adds additional stress to the student. Furthermore, the fear of loneliness during the writing process affects many students. Students often procrastinate for this reason when they possess a strong ability and desire to connect with others and the outside world. Students often feel a loss of creativity and freedom in their writing; this aspect contributes to the unrealistic standards students have for themselves. These ideals deplete the writer of confidence to write his or her essay. In addition, parents provide another source of pressure for students. Traditional parenting includes the involvement of parents in their child’s academic life which often proves a disadvantage to the student as their expectations rub off on them. Because adults tend to have more education and writing experience than their children, they believe their child can write better than they are. However, writers tend to set the highest standards for themselves. They believe if their writing cannot please themselves it will never please any reader. The immense pressure students put on themselves creates a sense of hardly satisfied perfectionism. These unrealistic expectations continue the drain of the desire to write for a student. The desire to write is simply not present in most students.
To explain, many stressors and activities including extracurriculars or a struggling home life preoccupy writers, especially around the age of high school students. When students are already stressing over these aspects of their life, they become extremely drained of energy and have no fuel to write a supposedly daunting paper. The task at hand suddenly becomes more significant than needed and the student loses the spark to begin the essay with. In like manner, when creativity is absent either in the guidelines or the student, writing a paper is as enticing as visiting the dentist. Creativity is a main source of the want to write for students. The loss of freedom in writing makes a student feel as if an unsettling and intimidating duty shackles them. Moreover, teachers require students to create essays on certain ideas and topics. If the writer does not connect to the topic assigned, the will to write diminishes. Without a relationship between the topic and writer, an essay is uncompleted. When the desire to write is nonexistent, students tend to not complete an

We would do research on a subject or a person, and write about them. We, once again, were not allowed to be unique in our writing or think creatively or critically. This is the time when I was taught the five paragraph essay. As stated in Gray’s article, the five paragraph essay is detrimental to students’ writing. This format for writing is damaging because it doesn’t allow students to express their own ideas about a topic. It does not allow for any creativity or uniqueness in a paper. In tenth grade, I wrote many papers for my English class, but I never once got an A on them. I was led to believe that my writing was weak because I could not relate to what I was writing about. I did not have any emotional connection to the research papers I had to write, and it made it harder for me to write them. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. English composition has always been a weak point for me. I despised the thought of having to write down my thoughts on paper in a manner that was appropriate for my teachers. English 1301 introduced me to a new tool to soothe those crazy thoughts through stream of conscious writing. At first I was very skeptical, but it proved to be valuable in understanding that I had more knowledge of the topic of discussion than was realized. Although that tool helped tremendously, it did nothing to quell the quality of my procrastination skills. In high school, I completed most of my homework at the last minute. Coming into college, that clearly could no longer be the case but it still stuck. One concept that utilized my procrastination skills to my advantage was peer review. Peer review forced me to write all of my essays ahead of time in order to make the grade. Not only did it help with my procrastination, it also gave me lots of feedback on my writing. During the narrative essay draft one, I was given a lot of revisionary advice, and that was due to the fact that I wrote the paper at the last minute. Knowing that, when it came time to write the argumentative essay I spent more time actually putting better grammar and diction into my essay because I did not want my peers to think any less of me academically. It is the bane of the college student’s academic career, therefore, it needs to be identified, addressed, and hopefully forgotten for as long as it takes to finish the essay. It comes in many forms, such as obsessively checking one’s cell phone, but the most common iteration of it is the person who leaves vague status updates on Facebook, undoubtedly baiting for people to comment on his post, but no one on his friends list bites, leaving him with no other option than to retract his update, which in turn wastes time—time that should be spent on writing his paper! We all go through many obstacles in our life, and most of the time, we don't know what to do about it. I have an obstacle that I am currently going through. I am a very bad procrastinator, and for the past week, I have been struggling with beginning this essay. Everyone goes through hardships in their life. It's a completely normal thing. I began to avoid myself from continuing my habit of procrastinating. Over the years, I was always a person who struggled on producing quality material when it came to writing about a book or piece of literature assigned for me to read and analyze. Evidently enough, this struggle carried into this course and I have received subpar grades because of it. However, I believe that the tools, strategies, and knowledge given to me by the instructor has helped me greatly to improve my writing. Not only did they give me more of an outline to follow when I had no clue how to start but also, they have given more confidence that I can finish the assignment.
