Paralysis is usually on the side of the body opposite the side of the brain damaged by stroke, and may affect any part of the body. If paralysis is considered as one side, it is known as hemiplegia or one-sided weakness, known as hemi paresis. A stroke is when poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death.
