Parachute Investigation
Aim: The aim of this investigation is to see how the factors of
terminal velocity affect it.
Equipment: The equipment/ apparatus required for this investigation
are:
ü Large plastic bag-to make the actual parachute
ü Two Styrofoam cups-represents “person”, holds the sand & measure
sand
ü Sand-acts as the weight of the “person” in cup
ü 4 white string-attaches the parachute to one of the Styrofoam cups
ü Small Ziploc bag-to contain sand and prevent from spilling in cup)
ü Balance- to weigh sand to accurate weight
ü Stopwatch-to time how long it takes for the parachute to fall at a
height with a certain weight
ü Scissors-to cut holes into the one of the Styrofoam cups, plastic
bag & roll of white string
ü Pen & paper-to record results
Method: The method for this investigation will be carried out as
follows:
1) Collect the equipment listed above (large plastic bag, sand,
stopwatch, Styrofoam cups, Ziploc bag, scissors, white string, pen &
paper)
2) Make the parachute: punch four holes with the pair of scissors
through the large plastic bag; one through each supposed corner of the
plastic bag
3) Punch four holes with the pair of scissors through around the rim
of one of the Styrofoam cup, vaguely in four “corners”
4) With scissors, cut four pieces of white string from the roll in the
same length accurately
5) Using the four strings, attach the four holes on the parachute to
the four holes on the rim of the, one string from one hole on the
parachute to one hole on the rim (holes on the parachute should be in
line with the holes on the rim of the cup that they are attached to)
6) Use the other Styrofoam cup that is not used to pour sand into
Ziploc bag until 20g is reached while Ziploc bag is on balance to
weigh the sand accurately
7) Seal top of Ziploc bag and put into the Styrofoam cup attached to
rings on the ends of the cinch. Next, take the two d-rings in the center of the cinch and with your
I was at Fort Benning Georgia in August 1988 to attend jump school. I had done my basic training here four years earlier with Sgt. Smith who would be my black hat true instructor for airborne school. I was standing in formation at five in the morning. It was cold now, but Georgia has hot, humid daytime temperatures that were draining mentally and physically for a student from Northern California. I knew I wanted to be here even though there would be physical and mental stresses, challenges and the possibility of serious Injury. The students would be weeded out at every point. I did not want it to happen to me. During my four years in the Army, I learned that I like to be an independent, resourceful, goal oriented problem solver. In the infantry, I had to obey the orders and not think for myself. Uniformity in everything was demanded.

The Colgan Air Flight 3407 was a very interesting case to look at. On February 12, 2009, at 10:17 pm, flight 3407 crashed at a house in New York after the pilots experience a stall. Flight 3407 was scheduled to fly from Newark, New Jersey to Buffalo, New York. The NTSB reported the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) revealed some discrepancies both pilots were experience. The first officer did not have any experience with icing condition but icing was one of the reasons the plane went into a stall. On the other hand, the captain had some experience flying in icing condition. The captain was experiencing fatigue, which indeed, made him unfit to recover from a stall. With that in mind, the Human Factor Analysis Classification System (HFACS) will give insight of some errors both pilots made.
The crime scene was then examined and a list of possible pieces of evidence were recorded down. Including a sketch of the crime scene, Anna Garcia’s house, with the locations of all of the pieces of evidence. All of these items listed help develop a theory about Anna’s death. This theory then helped establish a list of possible suspects. The person of interest list included a number of four individuals and each one had a relation with Anna. The list included (1) Alex Garcia- Anna’s ex-husband. They had an unpleasant divorce the year before and in a result Alex quickly remarried a much younger woman, while Anna remained single. Alex and his newlywed wife are expecting to have a baby soon. Although, Alex may be suffering from a few financial
For my breaching experiment, I decided to break the social norm of looking at someone while engaged in conversation with them. Today, it is socially unacceptable and impolite to avoid looking at someone when talking to them. The background assumption for a typical conversation is that direct eye contact will be made more often than not; otherwise social norms are being violated. Avoiding eye contact during an exchange tends to dehumanize the person that is not receiving the eye contact. It is impolite and offensive, not looking at someone who is talking makes it seem as though the topic being discussed is unimportant. For my research experiment I would constantly talk to someone without initiating eye contact, or with my back facing toward the subject, not turning around or making eye contact until I had to ring up their order or make the drink for them. This research is important because it uncovers what happens when the social norm of
What Shakespeare might call the fatal flaw of Fischer’s expedition seemed to be a collective lack of humility amongst his team, stemming of course from the top with Fischer himself, the “face” of the organization. Fischer was an ambitious man who was desperate to earn the respect of his peers, and came across as nothing short of overconfident when he was quoted in Krakauer's Into Thin Air as saying, "Experience is overrated. […] We've got the big E figured out, we've got it totally wired. […] (W)e've built a yellow brick road to the summit." (pp. 85-86) Even Fischer's experienced guide, Anatoli Boukreev, was not immune from pride, opting to make the climb without the use of supplemental oxygen, a decision that was not only completely unnecessary, but arguably ended up costing the lives of members of his team at the summit. Indeed, as Krakauer noted, there was a palpable lack of a team dynamic, a result of the Attraction-Selection-Attrition Theory; the team felt more like a bunch of individuals, all "in it for himself or herself." (Krakauer, p. 213) In a life or death situation, having a strong team dynamic is more important than ever. But Fischer was more interested in the parts, than the whole. As part of Fischer's ambition, he had made an effort to recruit high-profile clients, including a New York socialite who wrote for Allure magazine, and Krakauer himself, who could lend the expedition some heavy publicity, but brought very little by way of experience when it came to summiting a mountain as extreme as Everest.
The purpose of the projectile lab is to test the validity of the law of conservation of energy. The application of this law to our everyday lives is a surprisingly complicated process. Conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, but that it can be transferred from one form to another. Consider the projectile lab from document A that this essay is based upon. In an ideal experiment, the projectile is isolated from everything except the gravitational field. In this case, the only force acting on the particle is gravity and there are only two forms of energy that are of interest: the energy of the particle due to its motion (defined as kinetic
Ever been to a drunk driving trial? On Wednesday the 5th of October, I would experience a very touching event. This event was called the Mock Crash Trial put on by the sorority Pi Beta Phi. They held this in the auditorium of the Student Union. The event was attended by many students involved in a variety of greek organizations as well as any other student that attends The University Of Toledo.
Pre impact conditions mixed with event specific conditions combined with one another during a disaster produce physical and social impacts to a community. The impact from each disaster can be reduced by interventions through emergency management. By assessing these pre impact conditions, an emergency manager can produce social risks and vulnerabilities within their community. Integrating these social risks and vulnerabilities emergency mangers can use the four most important phases in emergency management: preparedness, planning, response, and recovery to benefit their community as a whole.
Travelling at a speed twice that of sound might seem to be something futuristic; however, this feat has already been achieved almost 40 years ago by the world’s only supersonic passenger aircraft-The Concorde. Concorde brought a revolution in the aviation industry by operating transatlantic flights in less than four hours. The slick and elegant aircraft with one of the most sophisticated engineering was one of the most coveted aircrafts of its time. However, this was all destined to end when Air France Flight 4590 was involved in a tragic disaster just outside the city of Paris on July 25, 2000. The crash killed 113 people, but more disastrous was its impact. The belief and confidence people had with Concorde gradually started to fade, and finally Concorde was grounded after two and a half years of the crash. Official reports state that the main cause of the crash was a piece of metal dropped by a Continental aircraft that flew moments before Concorde, but, over the last decade, the report has met a lot of criticism, and many alternative hypotheses have thus been proposed.
Federal authorities are investigating a harmful situation at the at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall after at least eleven individuals said they felt ill after opening an envelope.
Crime scene investigators work for law enforcement agencies or other criminal justice fields that utilize trained investigators. They collect, identify, classify and analyze physical evidence to help solve and prosecute criminal activity. A crime scene investigator may test weapons, clothing, hair and tissue for criminal evidence. Once they collect all the evidence, they have to write reports detailing evidence collection procedures and conclusions, which is part of their responsibility. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the majority of crime scene investigator work with local and state government agencies, including in crime labs, Medical examiner offices and Law enforcement agencies. The duties for crime scene investigator is to secure
Skydiving has been around since ancient Chinese times as a form of aerial stunts. Leonardo da Vinci and the Chinese are both credited for creating the parachute, but it was really in the 18th century when France both created it and used it by basically throwing themselves out of planes. Little did anyone know that skydiving would be one of the craziest sports today. Jumping out of a plane two and a half miles up into the sky would not be someone’s idea of a normal day. As bad as two and a half miles up in the sky is, try doing it traveling at a rate of one-hundred and sixty miles per hour with just a parachute to save you. To many people this would be a nightmare; but to some of us, it is the biggest thrill of our lives.
