Kareem is a talented undergraduate student who I have had the privilege of working with in nuclear science research over the past year. We have worked on two separate neutron activation analysis projects together. He has also taken my upper level course in Nuclear and Particle Physics (UTPA course # PHYS 4309) with honors during the fall semester of 2013 and has expressed interest in my participation as his honors thesis advisor. It is a pleasure to offer this letter of recommendation for the DOE SULI program.

Kareem is an intelligent young man who is determined, willing and capable. I am continually impressed with his positive attitude, aptitude towards science, and resolve. Over the summer we worked together in the measurement of trace metal concentrations in Texas fish samples using nuclear analytical methods in collaboration with the Nuclear Research Center at the University of California Irvine (Dr. Mikael Nilsson and Dr. George Miller). An article was submitted to the International Journal of Applied Radiation and Isotopes on the aforementioned study and is currently under review for publication. Kareem has actively participated in data analysis and the writing up of this article. He presented the results of the study alongside myself at the American Physical Society Regional Meeting in Brownsville, TX (October 2013). Additionally, he presented a poster presentation at the Collaborative Basic & Translational Research in the Sciences Conference in San Antonio, TX (October 2013).

In our present project, Kareem is helping to characterize the neutron flux values of the UTPA Cf 252 neutron facility by activation analysis. The work Kareem does with the project is as follows. After calibrating the spectroscopy system, Kareem p...

In his additional coursework he went above and beyond by creating a draft of a scientific proposal that combined his research in neurobiology and nuclear physics. Kareem is already showing signs of a promising future in a scientific career by taking initiative in the expression of his ideas. The effort and dedication that this student is willing to put into each of his interests is truly remarkable.

Kareem is one of the most mature young men I have worked with. I wish more of my students were like Kareem: responsible, dedicated, and most importantly displaying a willingness to work hard. His interest and respect for scientific research is readily apparent in the way he conducts himself both academically and in the lab. I have no doubt that Kareem will be successful in the goals that he pursues within the STEM field.
