It was my first semester at West Hawaii Community College in Dr. Stevens’ world history class when I discovered the suffering state of our native lowland dry forests and the endemic tree species disappearing within them. Human interaction is the source of this degradation, so I took it as a moral obligation to work strenuously toward its revival. As a class, we were told that the land surrounding our campus at Palamanui was once teeming with the endemic lama tree, hence the name ‘Palamanui’. With very few lama trees that can be spotted from the college, members of the community, along with students at our campus came together to create a trail connecting these remaining trees. As a team, members of our community slipped their hands into gloves
The message of the film is to describe the Waorani lifestyle and how the rainforest is critical to their maintaining their nomadic lifestyle that has been a part of their culture for centuries. Wade Davis’ article, Among the Waorani, provides much of the content brought to
Many people are under a false impression that early Native Americans are the original environmentalists. This is an impression that many people share. The Abenaki tribes that resided in Maine from 3700 BP were not by our traditional definition, environmentalists. In fact they were far from ecologically sound. This paper is meant not to criticize the Native Americans of the age, but to clarify their roles in the environment. To better understand this subject some background is needed.
"Children of the Forest" is a narrative written by Kevin Duffy. This book is a written testament of an anthropologist's everyday dealings with an African tribe by the name of the Mbuti Pygmies. My purpose in this paper is to inform the reader of Kevin Duffy's findings while in the Ituri rainforest. Kevin Duffy is one of the first and only scientists to have ever been in close contact with the Mbuti. If an Mbuti tribesman does not want to be found, they simply won't be. The forest in which the Mbuti reside in are simply too dense and dangerous for humans not familiar with the area to enter.

Spreading along seventy thousand square miles in the Amazon forest, the Yanomami tribe resides and maintains their culture without intrusion. Their culture has evolved just like that of a modern society, but their way of life is very different. The tribe chooses to live in communal housing; large round dwellings called shaponos. The shaponos are made out of wood and are completely built by the tribe’s people (1). Fam...
The Korowai are one of the most endangered ethnic groups in the world. Their traditional culture was developed thousands of years ago. Lands are being used to create missionary communities. The Korowai territory is surrounded by missionary communities, who have influ...
Takashi Murakami is an incredible, talented Japanese artist whose modern artwork has attracted even the biggest names in the industry for collaborations, such as Kanye West and Louis Vuitton. Although Murakami does not think of his artwork as Pop Art, his work does have a Pop Art feel to it. Along with inheriting the responsibilities of running Al Qaeda, Zawahiri inherited the problem of dealing with the difficult main Iraqi branch of Al Qaeda, ISI. ISI had a reputation of being problematic and disobedient. The group utilized Al Qaeda’s name and finances to carry out rogue acts without the permission of Al Qaeda leaders. When Osama and central command would plea for closer communication with the group, ISI would ignore them and operate however they pleased. Al Qaeda’s tolerance of the branch’s disobedience wore thin with the unauthorized appointment of a new ISI leader: Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Al Qaeda had no prior knowledge to who this was, what he stood for, or where he came from (Malik).
To hunt the Huaorani use poisonous dart arrows that paralyze their prey. The toxin used is called “curare” and is derived from a plant. It causes asphyxiation as the animal’s entire body becomes paralyzed. The Huaorani never hunt the jaguar or snake. Snakes are considered evil, with the anaconda being the most fearsome. They believe that once the body dies, the spirit is met by the anaconda on its way to the afterlife. If the spirit is brave, it will leap over the snake and continue on its path. If not, it will be sent back to live as a termite.

Other than that, it is believed that by losing rainforest, we are losing the ancient way of life. Hunting tribes such as the Penan people inhibit these forests. They live on the Borneo Island in the State of Sarawak. These people live in small huts extending a few feet above the ground and live by collecting herbs, fruits and edible plants from the jungle. Furthermore, they hunt for animal especially during special events. However, due to deforestation and globalization, they are forced from this peaceful life to live in dirty government shacks filled with diseases they never encounter before. When they went out for hunting or gathering tribes, they could not resist confronting with the logging companies. Moreover, as forest, being tremendously cut down, wild animals will find new shelter and foraging deep into human settlement areas.
