People carry things with them all the time on a daily basis. They might be physical, emotional or spiritual things. Some people could carry a traumatic past while others simply carry a bag of groceries into their house. The things one carries defines them as a person and brings out their qualities as well as their defects. Some people might think of those things as burdens while others see them as a way out of reality or as something to push them forward, something to believe in.
In the article, “Attention, Students: Put Your Laptops Away,” the writer tells the reader differences between taking notes with a laptop or taking them in a notebook. When taking notes with a laptop people have the tendency to write down everything word for word while others cannot help but click a new tab and get on social media. Taking notes word for word has been proven that you do not comprehend what you are writing down. "When people type their notes, they have this tendency to try to take verbatim notes and write down as much of the lecture as they can," Mueller tells NPR's Rachel Martin. After reading the article my opinion is writing notes in a notebook is more beneficial than taking them on a laptop. If I want to excel in school and
The briefcase possesses inconstant meaning throughout the novel. Awarded as a prize to him for his triumphs, the narrator first views this object as a sentimental representation of his greatest achievement and future desires. He states “My fingers a-tremble, I complied, smelling the fresh leather an official looking document inside. It was a scholarship to the state college for Negroes. My eyes filled with tears and I ran awkwardly off the floor,” to show how the briefcase stimulates his emotional epiphany of his dreams being within reach (Ellison 32). By telling the narrator that he should “Consider it a badge of office,” and that the briefcase “. . .will be filled with important papers that will help shape the destiny of your people,” the superintendent and Board of Education present the idea that the narrator can make a difference in society, as long as it is within their circumstances (Ellison 32). This incident allows Ellison to portray the idea that society places labels on individuals to manipulate them into complying with specific structure and order. However, towards the conclusion of the novel, the narrator realizes that his past, including cultural history and personal events, holds him back fr...

Like an executive summary, many novels use the first chapter to introduce the major themes and contents of the work. An example of this technique is Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. In it, O'Brien uses the first chapter, "The Things They Carried," to introduce the characters and the tangible and intangible items they took with them and sometimes burdened over. He uses these possessions to thoroughly define the man carrying it. To these men, even in a war, it is not the machine guns and claymore mines that they prize to maintain their survival but items like pictures and pantyhose that help them remain sane and alive. Each man had his own needs and each man carried his own talisman, all in an effort to remain in the real world. These items eventually became the person carrying it. In this novel, O'Brien's successful portrayal of his war experiences was done by the use of distinguishing key characters and the things they carried to help identify the majorthemes of strength, weakness and confusion.

On average, one person will walk about 150 million steps in their lifetime (Phillips). What if these footsteps could actually be harnessed and converted to a form of energy that could actually help power the world? The very notion seems to come straight out of a science fiction novel about a utopian society. However, one man has taken the steps to make this dream a reality. Laurence Kemball-Cook has developed a product called Pavegen; essentially, it is a rubber tile that can, “harvest kinetic energy from the impact of people stepping on them” (Jain). By harnessing energy generated from footsteps, Pavegen can help to power appliances such as cellphones and streetlights. The idea behind Pavegen is to develop an accessible product that can help lower economic bills, and to make a positive impact environmentally. If similar products were produced around the world, Pavegen tiles could help businesses in taking one step closer to building a sustainable and environmentally whole planet Earth.
