As we learned in class from Dr. Ying Liu, there is no universally accepted definition for what an operating system is. According to Dr. Paul Mullins from Slippery Rock University, “An operating system (OS) is a software, that manages computer hardware resources, runs other programs, and provides common services for the user and application software” (“5.2 Software”). This goes hand in had with what Dr. Liu taught in class with his PowerPoint lectures stating that an operating system is “A program that acts as an intermediary between a user of a computer and the computer hardware”. It is important to comprehend that the operating system is one of the most important aspects of a computer. They can be found on any devices with a computer, cell …show more content…
Well, the market seems to disagree-or maybe it is only because of the high price point that Apple Inc. has on Macintosh computers. Unlike Windows, Mac OS has limited hardware support, which means that it can only be run-legally-on Apple devices. This is a disadvantage that has advantages within it; because of this disadvantage, Apple computers are less prone to viruses and malware because it is built entirely different than Windows (“Windows vs. Mac OS X vs. Linux: The Operating System Battle”, Ukshini). Also if less people are able to get their hands on these, hackers are less prone to want to attack them as “there not enough ‘food’ there.” But besides being an exclusive, pricy, and one of the least risky operating systems, the Mac OS is also very stable as it requires less processing power making it fast and efficient when working with software application that is developed for …show more content…
A kernel is “The one program running at all times on the computer…provides things such as network communication, file access, and process management. The kernel is there to make accessing hardware easier to the user (and in some cases protecting the hardware from the user” (Silberschatz, Galvin, Gagne, 2010, p.6). Thus, in essence, the kernel is one of the components of an operating system. This being said, Linux only becomes a full operating system once we enhance it with one of the contributions that have been made by developers that are known as “distributions” or “distros”. Linux has many distributions such as Arch, Ubuntu, Tails, and the list goes on. This being said, Linux is similar to the Mac OS in the sense that it doesn’t have a wide variety of software applications or hardware support, they have to be made to be specifically compatible with it. Similarly, Linux is prone to less vulnerabilities, which is always a good thing. However, Linux only hold 1.62% of the market share and this is due to the fact that it is one of the most complicated operating systems and requires much knowledge of using systems and tampering with them. These systems are not typically sold, but, instead, are built by those who have a deep interest in computers, or
The Linux operating system is the catchall term for the dozens of software stacks built around the free and open source Linux kernel. Clumped into distribution...
As stated before, Apple is a multi-billion dollar technology industry. The major competitors that Apple and its products is Microsoft and its Windows platform, as well as Google, and Samsung smartphones. All of these companies are in the top 10 global brands, according to Interbrand (2015). Comparing strengths of all companies, Apple has a solid financial support system and it is highly innovative because of the success of the products and the leadership of Steve Jobs, however what weakens Apple is the premium pricing of their products. Microsoft also has the solid financial support due to its leader, Bill Gates. Microsoft also has the dominance over the operating systems. Windows based applications are on almost all computers in the market
All might think that a PC is awesome, but is not called Windows for nothing. When they say Windows they mean Windows. Macintosh has been known for it’s simplicity. Windows users say Mac has no games. I say to them there are games, but if you want to “play games” get a game system. Macs give a new vision in the computer industry.
...ctioned, communicated, and performed their daily activities. In doing this however, they must stay on top of other competitors by creating new innovative ways to attract the consumers. Some had a long history while others had a short one. Some were provided great feature while others didn’t do so well in this area. One thing is for certain, each operating system provided a use for many consumers that helped not only in the personal lives of many but also within the business world. As we see the history shows that once upon a time what began as a way to for businesses to operate has now turned into a way that people communicate. Technology continues to grow and advance and with that waiting to see what the future holds is a mystery but I’m certain that it will be world of amazement especially seeing where operating systems have come from to where they are currently.
Windows based computers are cheaper, and more easily upgradeable than Macintosh systems. The reason for this being that Apple has exclusive rights to the hardware made specifically for their computers. Windows based system hardware is produced by literally thousands of manufacturers. This, of course, means competition, which in turn lowers prices. Macintosh systems are sold (primarily) as a whole system, meaning that the consumer ends up with what Apple has decided should be included in the system. Windows systems, however, can be built to the consumers needs, or by the consumer themselves. They could select which component would be best for them for the price they would pay for it. Most importantly, with a Windows based system consumers could select what components they wish to have based on what they might pay for them.
Linux is an OS for PC workstations that fully functional using graphical user interface (GUI). Linux is a Unix-like and POSIX-compliant computer. OS assembled on this platform is under the model of free and open source software development and distribution. Linus Torvalds was defining component of Linux as Linux kernel, the operation system kernel first released on 5th of October 1991. Cross-Platform OS is used in these workstations.
For those of you that still stuck in windoze land, have no fear; Mac OSX is here. As a 6-year user of Bill Gate's Windows, making the move to the Mac's creative user-interface was easy. I've been using Mac's throughout my whole life, but only come to enjoy it since OSX was released. OSX is jam-packed with matrix like features, the best pre-bundled software, and boyish good looks.
As the internet is becoming faster and faster, an operating system (OS) is needed to manage the data in computers. An Operating system can be considered to be a set of programed codes that are created to control hardware such as computers. In 1985 Windows was established as an operating system and a year earlier Mac OS was established, and they have dominated the market of the computer programs since that time. Although, many companies have provided other operating systems, most users still prefer Mac as the most secured system and windows as it provides more multiple functions. This essay will demonstrate the differences between windows
It is a well-known fact that Microsoft is the most marketed operating system. This can be explained by the decision by Microsoft to design and sell its operating system to other computer manufacturers. This meant making it compatible with other hardware. Apple did not choose to do this, making its operating systems only compatible with its own computer hardware (Derene, 2009). In a website article called “HongKait.Com: Online Tips for Designers and Bloggers” Nina Krimly states statistics that identify Microsoft as controlling 91% of the market while Apple Mac around 5%. The exclusivity of Apple did not make it popular among those who used the computer to work on projects both at home and at work in the past ...
Apple and Microsoft are one of the biggest computer systems known to man. Both are very different from each other that attract many people. Apple offers unique products and gadgets within the device. It comes with a variety of different things that have multiple positive items. Apple is clearly a better choice when it comes to electronic devices.
A set of libraries or functions which programs may use to perform specific tasks especially relating to interfacing with computer system components. 2. 3 factors affecting the choice of an operating system are as follow: a) Choice of processor and hardware for example if server machine is a Sun computer then will be forced to use Solaris which is Sun's version of UNIX. b) A hardware or software protocol, contained in the electronics of the disk controller and disk drive, that manages the exchange of data between the drive and computer.
The significance of the role of the Operation System (OS) in the overall Information Technology employment sector cannot be undervalued. Indeed, it is hard to talk about technical skill-sets or the practical application of such skill-sets without at least some underlying understanding of their context within a computer operating system environment. From hardware specifications and requirements, user technical support, system administration and security, to software development and system implementation, operating systems are an integral part of the information technology and computing world in all its aspects, and it is difficult to form a concrete demarcation between specialized careers in this industry and the concept of the computer operating system.
For computing on a budget, PCs wins hand down. There are a few things to take into consideration that may actually make Macs more cost effective: stability and compatibility. Years ago PCs were known to crash, and users would get the “blue screen,” but Microsoft has made their operating systems more reliable in recent years. On the other hand, Mac hardware and software have tended to be stable, and crashes do not normally happen. Unlike with a PC, a Mac can also run Windows.
An Operating system is system software that controls the system’s hardware that interacts with users and the application software. As we all may know, Windows Microsoft has always been a commercial high-level sale in the retail industry and an in domain operating system used today. But there are more operating systems than just Windows Microsoft than the general population may assume. Linux is another well-known operating systems, which is free and open-source software. Linux is also used in companies we would have never thought of like Google, NASA, USPS, Amazon and many more companies. Linux and Microsoft operating systems have been in competition to see which one is the best operating system in the market. There are so many resemblances
There are several mobile operating systems like: ios, android, blackberry, symbian os, bada os, windows os, etc...In this audit we are presenting windows operating system and android operating system in brief. Features and applications of these phones have been looked closely in the audit.
