In our technologically savvy world, it can be said that the internet conquers the social and economic status of every country and its individuals. In this exciting point of time, online shopping is not an uncommon term used. Online shopping is described as the process of purchasing products and services from merchants worldwide over the internet (WiseGEEK, n.d.). Online shopping is also sometimes referred to as e-commerce in the business world. Online shopping is so revolutionary, that it has single-handedly changed the entire norms of a society. Where once, we used to go to town or a shopping centre to get what we need, now the convenience of getting something is a few clicks away. We are even able to order food online and get it delivered to the doorstep without even needing to step out of the comforts of home (Nickson, C., 2013).
Online shopping has become a huge force in the industry for the past decade. Online shopping was pioneered by Amazon.com around the year 1999-2000. Amazon.com, founded by Jeff Bezos was the first online bookstore. Following the success of Amazon.com, many other websites started offering online platforms to purchase other goods alongside books (TNN, 2006). The number of people who shop online has been steadily increasing year by year, mostly due to the convenience of shopping from home. According to Nickson, C. (2013) it was estimated that the European e-commerce market was worth 200 billion pounds as of 2011. In 2013, online sales increased by 1.4% in December compared to November and 14% from 2012 (Associated Press, 2014). The creation of e-mail in 1996 had a huge impact on the development of online retail by introducing a fast and easy way to communicate with customers. For this two-year period Internet usage doubled annually, thus, allowing for the expansion of the industry. Google is launched a year later, in 1998, only to become the most used search engine in the world and an essential partner for the online retailers by helping them tailor their websites to customer’s personal preferences and by advertising. After that, more and more people see the opportunity in the growing industry and enter it. By 2001 there are more than 513 million Internet users globally, which calls for action in terms of creating regulations and laws to protect the users and personal property. E-commerce is a type of business where individuals, firms and companies engage in business activities over an electronic network mainly internet. The emergence of e-commerce can be attributed to the advent of new technologies, mail order purchasing through a catalog is possible. Currently almost all products and services are offered through e-commerce including financial services. E-commerce has emanated from a number of technologies such as electronic funds transfer, mobile commerce, online transaction processing, internet marketing, supply chain management, automated data collection system, inventory management system and electronic data interchange. With the dynamism and advancement of these technologies, in the current corporate world e-commerce uses World Wide Web as well as other technologies such as mobile devices, telephones, social media and email .
Internationally the share of online sales in retail is growing, driven by the increased sales in existing online retailers as well as by the market entry and expansion by traditional bricks-and-mortar retailers into eCommerce (Hübner, Holzapfel & Kuhn 2016:256). Conversely, online retailers are accelerating their expansion into bricks-and-mortar retailing. One such example is the merger between Amazon and Whole Foods Markets, a $13.7bn agreement under which Amazon will acquire Whole Foods Markets in an all cash transaction. This deal accelerates Amazon’s establishment of a bricks-and-mortar footprint, allowing it to reduce delivery lead times and last mile delivery costs (Retailanalysis 2017).

Although traditional shopping is still thriving, online shopping can be an alternative for people wanting to save time and money. If a certain customer plan to go shopping, it could be stressful and also be time consuming. E-business has made shopping or any kind of transactions online much easier and convenient. It introduces new facilities, opportunities and way of shopping for both vendors and customers.
