Why I chose this career of oncology? Being a oncologist would give me the opportunity of communicating and interacting with others that need my assistance. For this career path, I got inspired by my Uncle Steve Shelton, who is now battling cancer both lung and brain. Cancer patients were the ones who touched my heart, giving them the right treatment to cure any type of cancer. My whole life, I’ve enjoyed providing care and support for other people. Witnessing patients finish their last cancer treatment would be a blessing.

Due to the high demand of my career choice, I will be able to find my career in any location. Personally I would prefer to work at the local hospital, Laughlin Memorial Hospital in Greeneville Tennessee. If there are no other jobs available I would pursue my education and career in another location.
What steps will you take to become an oncologist? Earn your bachelor’s degree, when choosing classes make sure to include plenty of science, chemistry, and biology. These classes are the type of classes that will enhance your knowledge of the medical field. Attend medical school, and earn your M.D. or D.O. degree. Complete residency, professional training in a hospital or clinic that is required before you can become an oncologist. The time of residency will depend on the specialized area of oncology you are studying and can last between 2-5 years.
What types of scholarships and grants are available at East Tennessee University? East Tennessee State University offers the ‘Hope Scholarship’ which gives students $4,000 dollars a year to use on books, tuition, etc. The ‘Academic Performance Scholarship Program’ is ETSU’s largest merit.
