The memoir On Two Feet and Wings, written by Abbas Kazerooni, is a true story that helps students ponder global issues, racism, and maturing. This memoir tells the remarkable journey of the author, Abbas, a young boy escaping the Iran-Iraq War, and going to Turkey. His parents believe the best thing for him is to flee the country and start a new life alone and away from home to avoid being drafted into the war. In this segment, the author uses strong imagery that captures details in the scenery to help create vivid mental images that appeal to the reader’s senses, particularly sight; however, the author does not use any irony, symbolism, metaphors, or similes. As Abbas states that he is “overwhelmed by the sheer size and beauty of the consulate,” he exaggerates his reaction to emphasize the grandeur and magnificence of the building. Also, the author uses subtle personification when he says the trees are described as offering “shade to the carefully tended smaller plants,” attributing human-like action to the trees, which adds to the idyllic and serene atmosphere of the scene. The lack of literary merit does not diminish the quality of the book. The first-person perspective of Abbas brings immediacy to the story through his personal experience, allowing students to explore how a protagonist’s viewpoint can shape a narrative.
