The older adult interviewed for the purpose of this assignment was Alice Margaret Cox, the interviewers grandmother. Alice was born on February 17th, 1932 in Brown County, Minnesota. Alice was the daughter of Rose Veldman and had three brothers and three sisters. In 1942, Hikel Veldman, after marrying Rose, legally adopted Alice and her six siblings. He brought four children of his own, making a family of 13. After the family was adopted, the majority of their childhood to early adult life was spent living in Hollandale, Minnesota. Alice spent the majority of her life farming and now helps out part time at a family owned thrift store. Alice currently resides in Lake City Minnesota, in her home of twenty plus years. She spoke of times when her family system was broken, and how looking back on her childhood, Hikel was truly an amazing father figure and role model for Alice and her siblings. Growing up in the 1930’s, Alice explained that even though times are very different now, she always had food to eat, a bed to sleep in, and any other opportunity she set her mind to. The interviewer was pleasantly set back, assuming that Alice would have had a more difficult upbringing being that she grew up so long ago. Alice felt as if she was very blessed and grateful to have grown up having those resources available to her and her family. Alice lived on a farm the first 65 years of her life. She expressed how many lessons she learned throughout her years on the farm, and how they have shaped her to become the woman she is now. Some of the important lessons she learned on the farm were hard work, dealing with death (of animals) at an early age, how to prioritize responsibilities and how to respect others. When Alice turned 18, she met Charles Cox. Not even a year later and they were married. Five children later, they had made a family of their own. Alice and Charles continued to farm during their life together until they retired at 65, raising their children similarly to how they grew up, with many responsibilities. The interviewer did this on purpose to cover all aspects of the assignment. Alice was more than willing to answer sensitive questions, and both Alice and the interviewer were comfortable discussing difficult subjects. The interviewer believes this went smoothly because of the personal relationship between the interviewer and Alice. The interviewer had previously received Alice’s permission before the interview was conducted to include sensitive topics as well. Alice had a wonderful marriage but lost Charles from lung cancer in the early 2000’s. She spoke about how life became so different, and having to live a life without Charles took years to learn. The number of life lessons she needed to learn without Charles was overwhelming but Alice showed a lot of self-awareness, explaining that she understood life needed to keep going, and that she needed to be there for the people still in her life. The interviewer was flabbergasted on how insightful and humble Alice was throughout this sensitive subject. Alice also spoke highly of her children as well, but also lost one of her daughters from breast cancer in the early 2000's, which she stressed really challenged her religious values and taught her how to accept that things are out of her control, and in God’s hands.
