Social Work Interview Paper

Interviewing and research skills are needed within the social work profession. Effective communication skills are one of the most crucial components of a social worker’s job. Every day, social workers must communicate with clients to gain information, convey critical information and make important decisions (Zeiger, 2017). This interview experience was an opportunity to explore the daily challenges and rewards of a licensed social worker. I was excited for the opportunity to interview a social worker in the gerontology sector as this is a specialty I am considering. This meeting allowed me to explore the educational steps of being a social worker, practices of the agency, the clients who are served, and the challenges the agency has.

She is also an instructor for the School of Social Work at New Mexico Highlands University and can instruct her social policy classes from Clovis Community College. She earned her BSW at Eastern New Mexico University and her MSW from New Mexico Highlands University. I find it amazing that she has time to teach while working more than forty hours a week. She keeps a daily schedule on her computer to stay focus and organize. These are two important steps to success in organizational skills.
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients

Also at times, it often seems that help is constrained by risk management and bureaucracy. For example, a social worker stops by to check on her elderly client. When she arrived, she noticed he was not waiting for her. She knocked on the door, and no one answered. She checked the door handle and noticed it was unlocked. She cracked open the door and called out his name, but there was no answer. However, she smelt a horrible smell. She walked in and found her client dead.
