“You have brains in your head. You have feet on your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” This quote from Dr. Seuss’ “Oh The Places You’ll Go!” really inspires students of all ages, including myself, to reach for our dreams. Anyone has the ability to change their lives by getting an education, although, due to different circumstances some students may have a more difficult time receiving an education. Attending college can be challenging for students who have issues with work, transportation, and family responsibilities. For starters, attending college can be difficult while managing a job. Trying to work enough to pay bills while keeping up with school can be hard, due to the long hours both a job and full time school require. Many students spend the day time going to school, working right after, and then returning home to do schoolwork until the early morning hours. For example, my mother earned a bachelor's degree while working and supporting a family of five. I know she must have struggled with working full …show more content…
For instance, Although there is a bus service that is free to any Black Hawk college student, one cannot predict the accuracy of the bus’ drop off and arrival times. Many students face the fear of being late to class or work. Another option for students is to walk or carpool with a friend . These too, are very unpredictable due to the weather and the possibility of failing friendships. Correspondingly, I have struggled with transportation issues since high school. Even though I work a lot I have not been able to afford a car and the payments, much like other students. My parents do offer to take me to work and school, but with their crazy schedules I often worry about arriving late to school and work. Having a car would make getting to school and work much easier for myself and many other students I know are facing the same troubles with
College takes a serious toll on people, some are able to strive through and come out on top and some suffer from outside family issues, can’t financially keep up with school or just lack the skills that are needed for higher education. College sometimes just isn’t for everyone; and students can’t handle it all like I couldn’t myself.
Going off to college is probably one of the best things a person can do to further their education. The promise of a degree from a university seems achievable but is shadowed with the many challenges that come with a higher edification. Often many college students find themselves bothered by these obstacles which can determine whether the college student succeeds or not. There are many endeavors in college but it depends on how the student reacts to these situations.
As the economy evolves and the job market continues to get more competitive, it’s becoming harder to have a successful career without some kind of college degree. This creates a belief in many young students that college actually is a commodity, something they must have in order to have a good life. There’s many different factors that influence this mindset, high schools must push the importance of the student’s willingness and drive to further their education. College isn’t just a gateway to jobs, but it is an opportunity to increase knowledge and stretch and challenge the student which in return makes them a more rounded adult and provides them with skills they might lack prior to
Life is never easy, no matter how hard we try to short cut and escape the inevitable difficulties. After college is when life sets in, when work becomes a necessity and we all begin to find a place to settle down. People respond differently to different situations. Some of us embrace the freedom and the ability to earn money and spend money indiscriminately. Others crumple under the social pressures placed on us.
Since I grew up in a household with two parents who are college graduates, and even two grandparents who had graduated from college, the idea of attending college was never seen as a unique opportunity, but rather as a necessary part of my future. I’m not going to complain about growing up with parents who valued the pursuit of knowledge, but it certainly never exposed me to the mindset that maybe college is not the best option for everyone after high school. Today, there is a huge debate over if the price of college is really worth it in the end, with the high cost of tuition and the number of people who just aren’t prepared for the demands that college has to offer. And on the other side, some say that college is a necessity not just in one’s
It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
Sometimes students question themselves if college is really worth it? That question has many answers that only a student can answer and decide for him or herself. For some students college can have a positive, life-long outcome. However, there are many obstacles when it comes to college. A student has to be very dedicated in school, and they have to know how to manage their personal life, school and work. College seems like it has more negative effects than it does positive for some people. For the following reasons college is not worth the cost because it is very difficult to find jobs after graduating or they find a job that is not in their field, some students who are not academically prepared wind up dropping out of school and wasting their money and some students struggle to balance school life, personal life and work life. As a result these students end up dropping out of school.
As the cost of college tuition continues to rise each year, many individuals are questioning if a college education is worth the time and effort needed to obtain a college degree. In today’s society, however, a high school education or diploma is not enough to insure a chance at having a good future. For many students, the decision on whether or not he/she should pursue a higher education is a major conflict for many young adults who are graduating high school. Therefore, while some students wonder if going to college is worth the price tag, in the end, the benefits associated with earning a college degree are proven to uphold numerous opportunities for individuals in the future.
Imagine waking up at the break of dawn to go to work from six to eight in the morning, rushing to the 8:15 class at the university nearby that lasts till 10:30. Then going back to work around 10:45 for a four hour long shift at a minimum wage job, only to finish the shift around 2:45 in the afternoon. Exhausted at this point, but none the less traveling from the end of the shift to the rest of the classes from three to seven in order to be considered a full time student. This is a realistic outline of the typical American who needs to have a full time job in order to put themselves through college. This seems mentally and physically exhausting for the student/ employee. Would it not be easier on the student/ employee if they did not have to work as much, so that they could prioritize academics as a main focus? This scenario personalizes the argument for lowering college tuition. While college is a privilege and not a right, and colleges have to
College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. Some would-be students believe it is too difficult to pursue a college degree, believing they are not smart enough or personally powerful enough to see a degree through. And, no doubt, it is no walk in the park, but is and will be the most personally fulfilling and rewarding experience and personal achievement that life will bring, second only to a beautiful, long lasting marriage or having children to share ones life with.
When students are still in high school, college looms in the distance like an ominous cloud. Frankly, all of the students are scared about going to college. When students go to college they feel like going to the great unknown – to go to a place where they don’t know anyone. But after all college is not that bad.
