Sometimes students question themselves if college is really worth it? That question has many answers that only a student can answer and decide for him or herself. For some students college can have a positive, life-long outcome. However, there are many obstacles when it comes to college. A student has to be very dedicated in school, and they have to know how to manage their personal life, school and work. College seems like it has more negative effects than it does positive for some people. For the following reasons college is not worth the cost because it is very difficult to find jobs after graduating or they find a job that is not in their field, some students who are not academically prepared wind up dropping out of school and wasting their money and some students struggle to balance school life, personal life and work life. As a result these students end up dropping out of school. Graduating can be a very exciting moment in life, but it can be difficult to find jobs after graduating. The loss of jobs has increased since the Great Depression and the …show more content…
recovery of jobs have been painfully slow. Many of the jobs that are available are the jobs that do not require a college degree and that are minimum wage jobs such as retail. When the economy grows there are more possibilities of getting a job. In the talk show Tedx Talks, David Ray explains that most of the jobs that are available today are the jobs that do not require people to go to college by stating “most of the jobs created today are low skill and low income service sector jobs”. Even though some degrees can get people jobs many college graduate students wind up working in a minimum wage job. Not only is it hard to find jobs after graduating, it is especially difficult to find a job in a field of the graduate’s degree. Graduating and trying to find a job is hard enough but finding a job in the area of the degree a person pursued is very difficult. Many students graduate with the belief of finding a job right after college but that is not the case. In the talk show Tedx Talk host David Ray mentions the percentage of unemployed college students by stating that “In 2012, 53 percent of college students were unemployed or underemployed”. Underemployed means not doing work with the use of a person’s skills and abilities. Even though some degrees do get jobs in the desired field there is still more than a 50 percent chance of not finding a job in the majored area. An additional reason why college is not worth the cost for many students is that they are not academically prepared for the rigor of college classes. Many students graduate high school with a false perception of what college is really like. In the talk show Tedx Talk David Ray the talk show host mentioned how he used to be a teacher and noticed that school work started decreasing over the years and the students barely did the work, he stated that “students study about half as much as the students in the 1960s”. College can be challenging for the people who do not dedicate themselves to school and don't appropriately manage their time. Many students unfortunately are not prepared for college and end up dropping out. In the “Ivory Tower” documentary, Rossi demonstrates the statistic of student dropout by stating “68% of students dropped of four year universities as of 2012”. There are students who are academically prepared for college, however many students do not realize that college can be difficult and that they are not academically prepared for college courses and they unfortunately end up dropping out which can be expensive. Another reason why students drop out of college is not being able to manage work, school and personal life at once.
Many students believe that they can handle having a part time job and being a college student at the same time. For some students having a job and being in school can be manageable but there is some students who believe they can manage their personal life and school at the same time. In the talk show Tedx Talk with David Ray, Ray mentions that students with jobs tend to struggle more in college and have more of a chance to drop out, when he states “students have to work part time jobs or multiple jobs to pay for tuition and they do less school work”. College is worth it for the students who know how to manage their personal life with their school life but sadly there is students who do not know how to manage their time appropriately and end up dropping out of college which results to losing
money. In conclusion, there are many good things about college, but it has many negative outcomes too. It’s hard deciding whether college is worth it or not. College is for the students who want to get an education and be someone successful in life. There is many obstacles in college that can prevent a student from obtaining their degree. When it’s time to choose between college and work after high school, students need to consider the job outcomes and the ability to be academically prepared and personally prepared.
A majority of people believe that graduating from college will result in a well-paying job. Unfortunately, a degree will not secure a job for many graduates. In the U.S., the jobless rate for college graduates in 2012 was 7.7 percent, and has further increased in the past five years(Robinson). With such a large pool of unemployed citizens for employers to choose from, recent graduates are facing fewer opportunities for work due to little or no previous work experience(Robinson). Although many graduates are faced with unemployment, the majority do receive the opportunity to work. Sadly, many must work jobs they do not enjoy for salaries that make it difficult to make ends meet(Debate). Students are faced with mortgage-sized debts upon graduation, making it difficult for them to start businesses, buy cars or houses, or make other investments that would better the
The argument about if college is worth it or not has been one of the biggest arguments throughout the media for decades. Students suffer a lot from the debts that they get from college and also the amount of studying that they do in college and when they graduate they ask themselves “is graduation from college really worth all the money that we paid and all the work that we have done?”
“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won't come in.” ("Isaac Asimov." Goodreads. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 May 2016.) This quote by Isaac Asimov perfectly states how I personally feel about assumptions. In any event, it is good to have an open mind, especially when it comes to people's personal experiences and struggles. It is better to be a thoughtful person rather than assuming things about people that may not be true. That being said, Assumptions about community college students are unfair and incorrect. Misled people say that community college students are unable to attend a four-year university. As well as a degree from a community college is not as good as a university degree. I
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In Pharinet’s blog post, Is College for Everyone? He states that “…it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate. There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college. There exist students who do not have the desire for college or learning.” This statement is important because if 50% of students that begin college never gradua...
In our educational system today many students tend to drop out early due to the fact of lack of motivation or they can’t be in school anymore. Charles Murray, author of “Are Too Many People Going to College?” states the importance of the educational system in America. He has different viewpoints on whether certain people should attend college or not. The lack of interest in school and learning is playing a major effect on the student’s decisions to attend class. However, many students just attend college for a semester to prove to other people that they can survive college for a small amount of time. Although, this is the reason that many students drop out and are wasting their money for no reason. College can become very difficult in the fact that it’s hard to comprehend what the professor is trying to teach them. Receiving a college education is very different from High School is that the work and the
Interested in college? Most people should be. A lot of people think this a hard decision in life. Collage is a big choice in life but it sure is worth it. Some people may ask “why is college important for me” or “how would college get me anywhere in life” well, A college education is valuable because one or more people could get a better job, earn more money and meet new people that one would still be in touch for life.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” (Nelson Mandela). The question of whether or not college is worth it, is becoming very prominent among teens and their families. From a young age, Kids get asked what they want to be when they grow up. For different people, it’s different things, but it all leads to the question of whether or not they will be attending college. There are many benefits to going to college, but there are also many drawbacks. Many teens coming to the end of their high school careers are now faced with the challenging question of whether or not college is worth the investment.
A diverse array of arguments concerning the costly price of college and its equivalence to the ultimate result of attending persists along a vastly debatable spectrum of economic and social influences. Those seeking a better standard of living by the means of higher education often find themselves in conditions that are more adverse than their lifestyle prior to attending college. Efforts to dwindle the expenditure of college education have the potential to produce a heightened reality of the world, with intellectual knowledge as a pivotal key. The expensive cost and limitability of a college education has potential to invoke incentive to work harder in one’s studies; however, the cost can crush individuals enrolled, obtaining a college degree does not ensure employment, and an excessive number of individuals are hesitant to attend college in the first place due to the prevalent debt tied to its completion.
Does college still pay off? Yes, it still pays off and student should go to college. The three reasons to support this or you will have a large income, you will have a better choice of jobs, you will be happier and a healthier life.
In our further growing globalized economy students are realizing it of great importance to attend a secondary institution in order to achieve success. In the New York Times’ section “Room for Debate” the article “Should College Be Free”, many credible sources with different backgrounds discuss their views on if it should or shouldn’t be free. However, many students nowadays enter college unprepared and are unfit for the obstacles they may face in higher education. Due to this, having college be free will offer students who shouldn’t be attending college to motivate to do so, and will waste time for educators and students at higher institutions.
As senior year comes to an end you turn in your college applications and some try to get a scholarship but, some decide to not go to college. Going to college is important because you will have more options of jobs. You might have a job that pays a lot but when you get really sick or get injured they won’t pay you for those days that you were recovering. If you do get sick and you went to college and you do have a job with medical insurance they will pay you for those days that you were recovering. College is important because those who go to college will earn more money

However, with only a highschool degree, the average people will make is $27,915. On January 8, 2015, Barack Obama introduced the idea of two years of free community college.
In recent years, students have paid more to attend colleges and not earning all their money back. Some people are wondering if college education remains a good investment. However a study shows that both a bachelors degree and an associates degree still tend to outweigh costs. Both return about 15 percent over the past decade. That is a lot considering that you spend a lot on just going to college. With the costs of a college degree is it still worth going to college? (Abel 1)
When thinking about having to go to college, we often look at the parties and how hard it must be, but do we look at how much it costs, or if it best suits us as an individual? As we all grow up wondering why we often get told to go to college, we may not realize the pros and cons. With going to college it can be hard, make us as teens go into debt before we even start our career, or often we lose interest in the career before we graduate.
College. The First thing that I think of when I hear the word “College” is partying, or having fun with friends, or even freedom. But that’s not always the case. As a high schooler, there are so many things I don’t know about college. However, after doing my research, there are so many things that helped me understand the concept behind college and everyone’s opinion on it. Some had negative responses while others had positives.
