A Whole New World of Food

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk off campus to grab a caramel macchiato? With the new mall, Ka Makana Ali’i, being built right next to the middle school, this could be a reality. In my own personal experience, I am sure that several other students, as well as myself can agree that school lunch is repulsive, but instead of eating this garbage we call food, students could go next door to purchase the food we crave on a daily basis. The subject I will be discussing is if students should be eligible to purchase off campus lunch. Be honest, would you rather eat the bland ramen served by the school cafeteria, or a ramen that has had it’s broth carefully cooked, and noodles perfectly textured just for you to eat? I highly doubt that students would rather eat the bland ramen. According to kqed.org, the article states, “In 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that LA Unified School District, the second biggest in the country, launched a healthier food initiative. The district nixed chocolate and strawberry milk and foods high in fat and sodium, like chicken nuggets and corn dogs. Instead, they served healthier alternatives like vegetarian curries, tamales, and quinoa. While nutritionists praised the changes, local students were not so pleased. School lunch participation in the district dropped by the thousands, and school administrators said many students were simply throwing away their milk and entrees.” This evidence supports the reason that students would be able to purchase a more appetizing lunch because it shows that students would prefer more unhealthy food options than the healthy food that cafeterias are forcing students to eat, and even though the cafeterias want students to eat healthier food, the plan is not working because students just choose to throw away their lunches instead. Allowing students to purchase off campus lunch would solve their problem of having to eat a disgusting lunch. But wait! There is one more reason as to why
