A Whole New World of Food
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to walk off campus to grab a caramel macchiato? With the new mall, Ka Makana Ali’i, being built right next to the middle school, this could be a reality. In my own personal experience, I am sure that several other students, as well as myself can agree that school lunch is repulsive, but instead of eating this garbage we call food, students could go next door to purchase the food we crave on a daily basis. The subject I will be discussing is if students should be eligible to purchase off campus lunch. Be honest, would you rather eat the bland ramen served by the school cafeteria, or a ramen that has had it’s broth carefully cooked, and noodles perfectly textured just for you to eat? I highly doubt that students would rather eat the bland ramen. According to kqed.org, the article states, “In 2011, the Los Angeles Times reported that LA Unified School District, the second biggest in the country, launched a healthier food initiative. The district nixed chocolate and strawberry milk and foods high in fat and sodium, like chicken nuggets and corn dogs. Instead, they served healthier alternatives like vegetarian curries, tamales, and quinoa. While nutritionists praised the changes, local students were not so pleased. School lunch participation in the district dropped by the thousands, and school administrators said many students were simply throwing away their milk and entrees.” This evidence supports the reason that students would be able to purchase a more appetizing lunch because it shows that students would prefer more unhealthy food options than the healthy food that cafeterias are forcing students to eat, and even though the cafeterias want students to eat healthier food, the plan is not working because students just choose to throw away their lunches instead. Allowing students to purchase off campus lunch would solve their problem of having to eat a disgusting lunch. But wait! There is one more reason as to why
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.
Though proponents of this method argue that it has lowered meal debt and the amount of families failing to pay, Stacy Koltiska refutes this claim by saying: “[The ones making these policies] are suits at a board meeting… They are not the ones facing a child and looking them in the eye and taking their food away.” While it is irrefutable that debt in schools is a problem that must be tackled, it is not a justifiable excuse to take a child’s midday meal out of his or her hands and throw it into a trash can because his or her parents can not put money into their child’s lunch account. There is no excuse for denying a child a hot meal or making them go hungry during the school day for something that is not their fault. Schools with enormous food courts where students can buy meals and drinks from commonly known franchises, such as McDonalds and Coca-Cola, are the schools with the most health problems. Fast-food franchises are showing up everywhere, but do these businesses belong in high schools? No! Schools are here to enlighten students for life after school. If high schools promote bad eating habits by placing fast-food franchises in their cafeterias, then how can students eat right and healthy beyond high school.

Moreover, according to Cooper, the U.S. spends more than 100 million dollars on fast foods portion which the U.S. suppose to spend less amount of money on fast foods to improve the entire food system of the country. If the U.S. government lower the expense of fast food system and raises the amount of money for school lunches, entire schools of the U.S. would get positive results. For example, students could brainstorm very fast as Albert Einstein, and gain more energy to work out on their gym classes. Furthermore, school have to create agriculture class for students to have strong knowledges in foods. Students can literally be ware of what they eat at their lunch times; they will know vegetables grow in the ground and how foods are really fresh. The right to the student should be guaranteed to open campus lunch. We are living in a failed experiment, that is the government controlling the school lunch. It is time to step out of the failed experiment and do another experiment, only this time successful. Student should be allowed to have open campus lunch.

One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. As student Bryan Huang said, “The lunches are horrible, they need better choices and more choices.” In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years,” meaning that America’s children need to start eating healthier, including healthier school lunches. The National School Lunch Act is a fairly recent addition to American society. For, as the world waged war a second time, the United States began to worry about the strength and health of the country’s soldiers. However, in the beginning, selling excess agricultural goods was more important than building a healthy, well-balanced meal for students. Unfortunately, many children coming from poorer families could not afford well-balanced school lunches, so in order to compensate, the School Lunch Program changed its focus to help these students. This program, however, decreased schools’ lunch budgets, and schools had a hard time keeping up with the amount of free meals they had to provide, so they came up with some extra ways to increase revenue. When I was in high school, several Juniors and Seniors had their own cars to go wherever they wanted. However, the school administrators and school district were very strict on students skipping class, leaving school for lunch, and family or friends bringing food for students to eat during lunch time. In this day an age, a lot of teens are mature enough to drive, vote if they are 18, hold down a job, watch R-rated movies, and even marry in some states. Since teens are trusted with doing those factors they should be trusted enough to leave campus for lunch and decide whatever food they want to eat.
