Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian whose plays have survived over the many years since his death. Sophocles was born in 496 B.C., just outside Athens, Greece, and died in 406 B.C. Sophocles was one of the three classical Athens’ great tragic playwrights, and his works have been celebrated for more than fifty years. During his writing career, Sophocles wrote one hundred and twenty-three dramas, with his most known work being Oedipus the King. It is believed that Sophocles was a favourite in his community and that he participated actively within it. Over time he was placed in charge of managing the tribute money of Athens, and later was elected as a strategoi, a high executive official who commands armed forces. Sophocles was very wealthy,
