Occupational psychology according to the British Psychological Society(BPS), ‘Occupational Psychology is the application of the science of psychology to work. Occupational psychologists use psychological theories and approaches to deliver tangible benefits by enhancing the effectiveness of organisations and developing the performance, motivation, and well-being of people in the workplace.’ This essay is based on this definition of occupational psychology. A schema is a cognitive theory that suggests we create a template of any and everything which we can add to throughout life experiences. Therefore if anything negative is picked up by the schema. in regards to innovation this template is made and therefore innovation can be decreased. This idea is put forward by Bordia et al. This suggests that psychology can provide an explanation for how and why innovation can decrease. If these ideas are taken knowing why innovation in the workplace will decrease can point occupational psychologists in a direction where they’re able to increase innovation. Research by (Schweiger & Denisi, 1991) identifies the different ways uncertainty and anxiety can develop at work during mergers and takeovers. They highlight communication between the top managers and people in power with there employees as a way to reduce both uncertainties and increase innovation. Though the research is focused majorly on the impact of mergers and takeovers on staff it demonstrates the way that occupational psychology actually can affect change in a business. The career that interests me the most is Occupational Therapy. I chose to interview Debbie, a Registered Occupational Therapist who received her Bachelor’s in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University. She is working at Lynwood Manor which is a long-term rehabilitation facility.
Becoming an Occupational Therapy Assistant has been an ambition of mine for several years now. After researching, job shadowing, and talking to professionals, I have decided to make Occupation Therapy my career. My passion is to help patients by participating and assisting them in their recovery from injuries and disabilities. My compassionate and caring attitude will be vital assets in pursuing this career. After training in Occupational Therapy, it is motivating for me to know that I will be a part of assisting patients to gain back their independence. Helping others is something that I am passionate about in my career and in my spare time. I have been on several mission trips to Haiti and other places which I have provided care for others in a medical setting.
1. Understanding pyschology has many explanations and ideas to figure out why humanity is the way it is. What are the six main perspectives all about? The biological perspective in pyschology examines the humans behavior in the brain, nervous system, endocrine system, and of course our genes. The way scientist study the biological perspective is that they look at the person 's family background, and past genes. So if someone has bipolar disorder the scientist will go back to see if anyone in their family once had bipolar disorder. Occupational science is an emerging academic discipline which is based on the traditional values and beliefs of the occupational therapy practice as articulated by Adolph Meyer, (Yexer ,1993), (Reilly, 1962) and others. It draws on a range of theories, research methodologies and approaches in order to understand humans as occupational beings. Also, it assumes that people’s experiences in engagement in meaningful and purposeful occupations influences both performance and intrinsic motivation ( Haertl, 2007)
I find occupational therapy to pique my drive to teach people valuable life skills as well as learn from those people and their experiences. Being an occupational therapist would allow me to have one-on-one interactions with patients and establish meaningful relationships over the course of time. Social psychology is a scientific study that studies how people think, feel, and how they behave under the influence of other people (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013, p. 2). Thinking about what social influence really means, we tend to think of a person who tries to persuade another person to acting a certain way. It can be a form of peer pressure, like taking that first puff of a cigarette, or it can be conforming to popular societal views, such as obeying the law of the land. Fiction is a great way to learn about social psychological perspectives. Watching popular theatrical films is the perfect way to learn because it illustrates the application of many perceptions within the subject of social psychology.
Occupational socialization is the process by which a person acquires the values, attitudes, and behaviors of an ongoing occupational social system (Stojkovic, Kalinich, & Klofas, 2013, p. 250). It is a continuous process and may result in both legal and illegal behaviors. Becoming aware of organizational and occupational practices, internalizing them, and carrying them out as participating members of the work group, affects the way they perceive, influence, and interact with citizens in a law enforcement capacity. These are influenced intentionally while going through training when beginning the primary introduction into a new organization, and through the actual experience in the office and on the job interactions. Police socialization for example, ensures that individuals acquire the necessary knowledge to perform adequately on the job.
There are many types of diverse people classified under various categories. Some people have different types of personalities. They could be classified as extremely manipulative, others as impulsive, and some may not show anything on the outside and have wonderful social skills.
