I chose the Chipotle restaurant located in Cedar Hill TX as the public place as a sample to observe peoples’ social interaction in Texas because I know many people choose to eat there and the customers and the staff members are always culturally diverse. When I arrived I obtained informed consent from the manager to observe for an hour. It was around one O’clock in the afternoon and just as expected there was a line of customers from the ordering counter to the entrance of the restaurant. I saw a mixture of African Americans, European Americans, and a few Latinos waiting to place an order.
As I observed the people in Chipotle, I began to watch the staff members first and I could see that the employees where happy and in a great mood because they were smiling at the customers as they approached the ordering counter and majority of the customers smiled back. Before they verbally greeted the customers they showed non-verbal communication by waving hello and smiling. to others. The first set of customers I saw checking out was a male and female which appeared to be a couple.
They stood closely and the European American women laid her head on the male’s shoulder as they were waiting for their food to be packaged. Their intimate physical contact showed me they were a couple. I noticed a man and a younger boy with melanin skin color and similar phenotypes. I believe this African American man was in line with his son because of their similar characteristics and the way the younger male responded to the man. Shortly after I noticed a Latina child repeating “Hi” loudly until this African American older women politely spoke to the child. I realized that this child did not know this woman because of the conversation but that the child had experience with speaking to strangers outside her culture and race because of her egger engagement with the
women. I also observed many people of different ethnicity using their phones while waiting in line without communicating with others, which is a universal act. Another universal act would be the amount of personal space between the people in line. For the most part there was an equal amount of space between the people in Chipotle and I believe this is a learned behavior. As this line moved forward I saw one employee use a hand symbol/gestor to guide the customers forward to order. Soon after, a group of adolescents entered and they appeared to be in middle school. One looked to be mixed with European American and African American because he had African American facial features with silky and curly hair and his three friends were European American. The way they were dressed and joking together I assumed they were friends from school. As my hour of observation come to an end I saw two sets of three come in with business attire. They adults in work clothes didn’t look related but shared core values. Their impatient facial expressions allowed me to predict that they had a short amount of time to purchase a chipotle meal, eat, and leave for work.
Chick-fil-A recognizes that their brand promise starts the minute the customer enters the premises. When a store opens for the first time, the franchised operator doesn’t just see an opportunity to sell his food product, but rather a “chance to interact, build community, and engage with customers and the community at large. We do this in a variety of ways. First and foremost, we strive to provide 2nd Mile Service to each customer. As we work to continuously improve, we want customers to experience something unique. We want to build community and create relationships between our customers and our food, people and restaurants” [3].
Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) has been a standout performer in the restaurant industry for several years now. However, its shares fell by nearly 6% in a single session after investors weren’t too pleased with its recent earnings report. Altogether, the stock has corrected nearly 20% since its March high of $622.90. Can the stock bounce back from here? Or will it continue its slide? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons.
1.1 Brief History Chipotle Mexican Grill was founded in Denver, Colorado in 1993. In 1998, McDonald’s became the majority shareholder; however, in 2006, McDonald’s divested its controlling interest. Chipotle became a public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 2006. It currently has 1,083 locations across the United States and Canada. In May 2010, Chipotle expanded into Europe, opening their first restaurant in the United Kingdom.
People are consumed with their own reality that they didn’t even acknowledge me sitting at a table watching them. Each person seemed to have their own stories different from everyone else’s. Any Chipotle I have always gone to have always had good service. Their employees are great. There is never a sour moment when you ask for anything, they are always kind and welcoming. I am always greeted with a hello and a smile when I step up to order. Even if the employee serving you has had a bad day it never shows, you would never know. Despite the lines being basically out the door every time you come (which is the only downside to coming here), the wait time can give you a headache. It is worth it, because Chipotle for sure serves fast food; they usually have three employees working to serve the food. One to get what you order prepared, one to add what extras you and to finish packing it and one to cash you out. The menu is very easy to read and figure out what you want. They have all of the print on the menu in white and big font so it makes it simple for everyone to read. So there isn’t any trouble ordering what you want. They have many different options to choose from as well. You don’t always have to get the burrito.
Panera Bread’s atmosphere is enjoyable. The employees and the managers keep the restaurant clean at all times. When I walked into the restaurant for the first time there were visible employees wiping off the table and sweeping. Panera Bread has almost no trash visible around the entire restaurant. Looking around, there were no trash cans in sight; they were hidden by doors and cabinets. Panera Bread receives ample amount of customers a day keeping the restaurant clean is important, but the workers keep everything running smoothly as well. While waiting in a moderately long line, the employees immediately noticed the incoming rush and started working as a team to get the customers and myself in and out. Along with the workers helping to make the line move faster, the customers in line around me are keeping conversation. We are entertaining each other making the wait time appear shorter. With the great customers and keeping the restaurant clean, Panera Bread workers and managers keep the restaurant well managed. The noise level is separated by the location of dining. As you know, Chipotle values our “food with integrity” promise and our customers respect that. However, the recent E Coli outbreak has caused Chipotle’s financial performance and reputation to suffer significantly and staying with our current business model is not our best option. Therefore, I recommend we rebrand and reposition Chipotle to ensure our long-term success.

I think our team did a splendid job putting this project together. I believe that the use of Google docs help us to coordinate efficiently and make sure the project looked uniform. My individual contribution was the introduction, the heading, products and services, and some distinctive issues of Chipotle. I believe my collaboration as a team member was well balanced with the other members of the team. Along the way, we communicated and gave each other feedback on our sections to make sure we were on the same page. We had a team of four which was divided into the following sections.
“A burrito bowl please!” The sounds of knives hacking meat and veggies almost made it impossible to hear what I was saying, yet alone the lady behind the counter. Sliding through the line as if it was an assembly line I asked for some steak. After 30 plus minutes of bearing a humid invading presence I was feeling lush that I got what I was waiting for. In that moment my feelings of happiness were interrupted due to noticing the manager empty out my food and put half a scoop of steak in my bowl. After comparing the quantities from what I had asked for I was enraged. I strikingly ask the manager to give me the quantity I had before he had redone my order, and he responds rapidly and firm “Well, that will be an extra five dollars!” I thought to myself “Five dollars!?” and replied to the manager “We’re not eating at the top of the Eiffel Tower, now please give me what I had originally been shown!” without a doubt in my mind the manager responds “Ok, then that will be an extra five dollars!” Outrages and hungry I accept the unreasonable and frustrating offer. I get to the register and realize that I was charged not an extra $5 but an extra $10. I was so agitated I didn’t even bother to say anything. Till this very day, Chipotle owes me one

When entering a restaurant, I usually expect to leave full, satisfied, and wanting to come back again. I believe that many people expect the same thing. The way people react to service can be very different from person to person. Depending on the way the customers are feeling, or the way that the server is feeling can be a big factor for the way service comes across. Service is an important part of everyone’s lives because majority of the jobs that people preform are service related. Poor service is an unfortunate part of life that everyone comes across. The way that I react to the poor service I receive is important and can change in the blink of an eye. Whether I react in an outspoken way, by getting loud and voicing my opinion. Or if I react in a quiet or apologetic way, it can affect my server, and the people around me, and myself.
