Chapter 4
Research Methodology
Research methods or techniques are the methods used by researchers in performing research operations. Research Methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It is the science of studying how research is done scientifically. It describes the steps that are adopted by researcher in studying his/her research problem along with the logic behind them. Thus researcher not only need to know the research methods/techniques but also the methodology [37].
4.1 Objectives of Research
The objective of research is to discover answers to the questions through the applications of scientific methods which are defined properly. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and is undiscovered.

Some domains that adopt computer simulation methodologies are sciences such as astronomy, physics or economics: other areas more specialized such as the study of non-linear systems, virtual reality or artificial life also exploits these methodologies. A lot of projects can use the simulation methods, like the study of a new developed network protocol. To test this protocol you have to build a huge network with a lot of expensive networks tools, but this network cannot be easily achieved. For this reason we can use the simulation …show more content…
Some ideas are the existence of conceptual and formal models (data models and algorithms). Since theoretical computer science inherits its bases from logic and mathematics, some of the main techniques when dealing with problems are iteration, recursion and induction. Theory is important to build methodologies, to develop logic and semantic models and to reason about the programs in order to prove their correctness. Theoretical computer science is dedicated to the design and algorithm analysis in order to find solutions or better solutions (performance issues, for example). In other words we can say that theoretical method to model a new system. However the theoretical method can help in finding new mathematical models or theories, but this method still needs other methods to prove the efficiency of the new models or
Based on the preceding ontological and epistemological assumptions a researcher then makes methodological assumptions. Having decided on exactly what is to be studied the researcher then decides how the research can best be managed thus formulating a plan of action. Considerations include whether the research used should be primary or secondary. Whether one will test an existing hypothesis or whether one will construct a theory after having collated evidence. Finally one can draw conclusions as to which strategy to implement with the ultimate goal of producing the type of knowledge that is required. This then results in the type of method or methods of research to be used.
A model is a visual representation that demonstrates a theory. Models are important since scientists often make models to represent something the naked eye cannot see. For example, Neil Bohr made a model of an atom to demonstrate his idea of what an atomic structure ideally looks like. In his model specifically, he demonstrates how electrons can jump levels, obviously nobody can see an atom or can see electrons jump energy levels, however the model helps prove his theory since it is based on the evidence he has collected. Erwin Schrodinger was able to mathematically calculate the probability of electrons being in certain areas around an atom. Without his electromagnetic radiation model, his theory sounds silly and sounds like it is not true, but his model and evidence has proven his theory. All in all, models help prove theories that scientists form based on the evidence they have
My themed research project will centre its focus upon the link between Riot Grrrl and its relation to Third-Wave Feminism. Primarily I aim to analyse Riot Grrrl’s music scene, but also its subculture mentioning its DIY punk ethic, political activism and most importantly its influential Zine network. However the purpose of this report is to demonstrate a grounded understanding in three research methodologies and how I will apply each one in regards to my own project. Firstly I’ll investigate the advantages of an Instrumental Case Study, looking at how it proliferates, rather than narrows a given field of study. Secondly I will delve into Symbolic Interactionism referring to some influential figures involved within this methodology, as well as providing an example in regards to my own topic. Finally I will clarify the subtle difference between Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis, concluding as to why I have settled upon the latter in my own research.
...1972) compare talking with to an angling campaign and, seeking after this relationship, Cohen (1976:82) includes that 'like angling, questioning is a movement obliging watchful planning, much persistence, and extensive practice if the inevitable price is to be a beneficial get'.
This essay is going to critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using surveys and questionnaires as a method of Socio-Legal research. When conducting socio-legal research, a number of methods can be used to collect useful information.
SIMULATION- In modelling and simulation, simulation is the operation of a computer model which predicts how a system will behave in a set of conditions. It is used in the analysis of the performance of a system.
It has been stated that “once you are clear about your research topic, you will be able to choose the most appropriate research strategy and data collection and analysis techniques” (Sanders et al, 2009: 20-21). This applies to the proposed research, as it is the “the logical sequence that connects the empirical data to a study’s initial research questions and, ultimately, to its conclusions” (Yin, 2009). A comprehensive research design includes strategies, choices and takes into account the time horizons. Extensive time and effort needs to be taken into account when creating a research design, as it has been described to be the glue that holds the components of the research project together. For this reason, it is vital that a detailed methodology is prepared meticulously in order to produce a solid research. It is important to note that there are a variety of ways to conduct a research to answer proposed questions, however each of the three questions will be tackled with an approach in order to provide a general understanding of the different methods to be adopted.
Research means different things to different people and may be motivated by what you want to gain from the research. Academic research differs from journalism where the latter may produce only one stance of the argument to gain the certain interest and strength. Academic and Social research is more systematic and seeks different angels, evidence and view points. Samantha Punch spoke about her motivation being to find a child’s perspective and finding out about their lives. To do this she had to challenge her own assumptions and it took time and a flexible an...
Research is systematic way to find out facts and knowledge as Kothari (2006) has analyzed that research is the pursuit of truth with the help of study, observation, comparison and experiment; the search for knowledge through objective and systematic method of finding solutions to a problem. However there are two types of researches one is by Purpose and other is by method. The type by purpose falls into three categorize such as Basic, Applied and Action Research.
A research design is defined as a plan or blueprint of how one intends to conduct research (Mouton, 2005:55). A research design focuses on the end product of the research process, that is, the type of study being planned and the type of results aimed at. Its point of departure is the research problem, and hence it focuses on the type of evidence required to address the problem adequately.
Research is an attempt to know new things, facts, information etc. in a scientific manner. L.V Redman and A.V .H Mory have stated “systematised effort to gain knowledge we call re-search.” The main function of research is to collect new facts, information etc and to establish new theories on the basis of these facts.
Research which is also known as the search for knowledge is an art of scientific search for specific information. According to Clifford Woody, the research includes defining and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis and suggested solutions, collecting, organising and evaluating data, making deductions and reaching conclusion and further testing whether the conclusion will fit into formulating hypothesis. Research Methodology is a scientific and systematic way of finding solution to a problem. In this research, researcher has studied various steps for research like problem along with the logic behind them. For this study, researcher must know various research techniques like mean, mode,
The Importance and Appropriateness of Utilizing Different Methodologies for Research. Introduction The process of research entails the logical as well as systematic search for useful data and information with regard to a specific topic (Jha, 2008). It is also comprised of the investigation of the best, most cost effective and appropriate solutions to both social and scientific issues, following an objective and logical analysis. Jha (2008) defines research as the search for knowledge and the discovery of the truth.
Defining the research problem (questions) is the first step in the research process. This means to define the problem to be researched and what we want to find out. It is also important to determine whether it starts from some existing theories or hypotheses. The research is conducted to prove whether or not these assumptions are true.
Basili explains in the article The Role of Experimentation in Software Engineering: Past, Present, and Future that to forward in software engineering we must first break things down to their most basic functions. On thing we must keep in mind the relationship between product characteristics and process characteristics. Product characteristics are things like efficiency, portability, reliability, cost, and schedule. Process characteristics are things like figuring which algorithms would best be suited to solve a problem.. Over time, our problem solving skills get better. The same could be said about computers. As we get better at solving problems, we can program computers to become better at solving problems. This improvement of problem solving is built upon the experience that we put into models. A model is a general term meaning a simplified version of a system. This allows us to deal with high levels of
