Obesity in America Today, 78.1 million American adults and 12.5 million children are obese. Obesity in America is a unstoppable epidemic. Since the 1960s, the number of obese adults have doubled and the number of obese children have tripled. Because of America’s obesity problems, Surgeon General David Satcher issued a report saying; "The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight," said that obesity "have reached epidemic proportions" in America. Obesity in America has no doubt reached epidemic proportions. Since 2001, America has been the most obese country in the world. This essay discusses what obesity is and how it is affecting today’s America by answers the following questions: 1. What is Obesity? 2. How is Obesity Affecting America? 3. How Obesity is affecting American Children? 4. Risks of Obesity in Adults? 5. Steps being took to prevent obesity Understanding how obesity is affecting American adults and American children, will help prevent future problems with obesity. What is Obesity? Obesity is when a person’s calorie intake exceeds one’s activity level. Activity burns calories and what ever calories are not burned, are stored as fat cells in the body. 19-24% is a healthy body mass index (BMI) for an individual. Mary Jo Thomas, M.D., states that “One that is obese has a body mass index of over 30. With a BMI of 30 or greater, one is at an immediate health threat.” (Thomas, 2013) Scientific evidence supports that the main causes of an obesity may include: ““increasingly sedentary lifestyle; high consumption of simple carbohydrates and fats (especially the refined sugars and greasy preparations common in junk and fast foods); and stress. To a lesser degree illnesses such as hypothyroidism (u... ... middle of paper ... ...sease, muscoleskeletal, and respiratory disease in the coming years of the individual’s life. (Obesity 2003) Research has shown that obesity increases the chances of getting cancer. Cancer linked to obesity includes uterus, cervix, ovary, breast, and gallbladder. A report by the American Cancer Society says that when a person has a BMI that is 40% or more above the normal, the risk of conducting cancer increases by 53% for women and 33% by men. A study published in the journal of the American Medical Association found that a women who gained at least 45 pounds since the age 18, were twice as likely to obtain breast cancer than a person who gained less than 5 pounds. The American Institute for Cancer Research released a report saying that 40% of all cancer cases could be avoided if they maintained a healthy diet and exercise regimen to maintain a normal body weight.
At this point in time, scientists and doctors have yet to discover the specific causes for breast cancer. However, what is known are the different risk factors that may trigger or put women more at danger of acquiring this disease. Aged women who have experienced menopause are more vulnerable at containing this disease. Women are also more at risk if breast cancer is common within their family because it is hereditary. In addition, smoking and drinking are other factors that can put women at risk as well (Stephan, 2010). Obesity in particular is a huge risk factor. Women who are overweight, especially those who have a thicker upper body, are more likely to develop malignant cancers in the breast than a healthy woman (Vona-Davis and Rose, 2009).
Obesity is a huge problem that needs to be resolved because it affects all people, unlike most issues. People of every gender, every age, and every race are at risk of being obese. Obesity rates in America have nearly doubled within the last twenty years. Something must be done not only to prevent obesity rates continuous rising, but also to dramatically increase the percentage of obese people in America altogether.
Obesity in America is a very serious problem affecting many Americans currently and is a problem that continues to grow each year. “Over the past 40 years, the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the United States” (Wimalawansa). This issue is known to many but believed not be an issue to care much about but this is not true. Obesity in America affects everyone regardless if they are obese or not. In order to resolve the problem, we can slaughter all the adults that are currently obese in America.
Obesity in the United States continues growing alarmingly. Approximately 66 % of adults and 33 % of children and teenagers in the US are overweight. Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than thirty percent is considered obese (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 271).
The World Health Organization defines obesity as the “abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health”. (WHO, 2014). It is considered to be a medical condition which may reduce a person's life expectancy due to the negative effect it can have on our health and well-being. An epidemic is said to affect a disproportionately large number of people in a population and spreads rapidly. In recent decades, it has been suggested that we are facing an obesity epidemic. Obesity has been considered as a disease by some for over sixty years. It is more common globally than being underweight. The purpose of this essay is to look at the history of obesity and how it is defined. It will look at some of the causes and consider the effects. It will consider how obesity is framed, whether we are indeed in the midst of an epidemic, or if this suggestion is merely moral panic.
Obesity has been identified as one of the risk factors affecting directly and indirectly the health outcome of the population. Even though many approaches and programs have been conducted in order to reduce the obesity rate, this health issue is still a big headache and keeps being put on the table. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), overweight and obesity rate have been increasing significantly in the past two decades in the United States with more than 35.7% of adults and almost 17% of children and adolescents from 2-19 years olds being obese ("Overweight and obesity," 2013). As Healthy People 2020 indicated, in the period from 1988-1994 to 2009-2010, the age adjusted obesity rate among U.S adults aged 20 and over increased from 22.8% to 35.7%, which means increased by 57% while the obesity rate among children and teenagers from 2 to 19 years old increased from 10% to approximately 17%, witnessing the increase of 69% ("Nutrition, physical activity," 2013). Obesity has impact both on economic and health of the nation. Obesity is the risk factor of serious chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancer, and other leading causes of preventable deaths ("Overweight and obesity," 2013). Moreover, obesity continues to be economic burden in terms of medical costs for either public or private payers up to $147 billion per year which increased from 6.5% to 9.1% (Finkelstein et al, 2009). In 2008, medical spending per capita for the obese or obesity related health issues is $1,429 per year, as 42% higher than “those of normal weight” (Finkelstein et al, 2009, p.8).
Although many individuals are uncertain about the increasing statistics associated with obesity, more than seventy percent of men and virtually sixty-two percent of women within the United States adult population are overweight or obese (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney). Obesity refers to the condition of having an excessive amount of body fat. If an individual’s amount of body fat becomes too excessive, he/she is at a much greater risk of developing life-altering diseases such as heart failure, hypertension, type II diabetes, cancer, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, etc. (Wilmore, et al., 2008).
Overweight and obesity has long been associated with many types of cancer. The best way to prevent prevalent diseases such as cancer is to maintain a healthy physique by means of proper nutrition and exercise. According to the World Health Organization, limiting weight gain during adulthood can reduce the risk of certain cancers such as colon cancer, renal cell cancer, ...
As you know obesity is a major healthcare issue globally. Scientist are still trying to understand this complex problem . Metabolism and behavioral factors appear to play a role in this serious condition. Food that our bodies do not immediately use or burn is stored as fat. This accumulation of fat can lead to weight gain, which can lead to obesity. We can fight obesity with simple nutritional changes and with a change in our everyday lives. Amercian views on obesity are not as strong as they should be .Obesity is a condition which is usually defined as person's body mass index (BMI). Obesity can also used as a general term for a person that has an excessive amount of body fat. Many people have argued that the obesity epidemic is very overblown and inaccurate, but they do not deny that obesity overall are indeed serious. A epidemic is a disease in which new cases appear in numbers far greater than what is expected. It was seen as a sign of h...
According to the Endocrine Society, obesity is a complex disease that is associated with a number of comorbidities, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010 reports that more than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 adults are considered to have extreme obesity. About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese. More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be obese. Adults 20 years of age or older having a BMI of 25 and higher are considered to be overweight, higher than 30 considered obese.
There are many causes for obesity each obese person can have a different one, but in general obesity is caused by an individual consuming more calories than the body can expend or actually needs. Obesity is defined as an abnormal increased of fat in the subcutaneous connective tissue. This means that there are many fat cells under the skin. Eating a lot of food than the body can use for energy makes this deposition.(5) The main explanation for this are eating too much or having a diet high in fat and calories and having lack of exercise or activity. Carrie Fredericks in her book “Obesity” he mention some facts about the causes of obesity and he said that people who get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise most days are less likely to be obese(31). So exercise is one of the factors that prevent obesity. Most dietary research suggests that people should limit the amount of fatty foods they consume to less than 30 percent of their daily energy consumption.
Obesity has become a definition of American culture. Obesity is having so much excess fat on the body that it poses medical risks (George L. Blackburn). Not only is there a difference between overweight and obese, but classifications of the grades of obesity: for instance, obese, morbidly obese, and super morbidly obese are some of these classifications. More than one billion people worldwide are obese. With 300,000 Americans dying each year fr...
This epidemic has been increasing throughout the industrialized world. In less than 40 years, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has increased by over 50%, so that two in every three American adults are now overweight or obese (Obesity in America, 5). The most obvious consequences of obesity are diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease, but cancer, arthritis, and depression are other serious factors to health. All in all, obesity and obesity account for nearly one in every 10 American deaths, and they also drain our society of $223 billion a year (Obesity in America, 5). Obesity is something that is present and dangerous, but people seem to overlook it.
The United States needs to do something to change the amount of childhood obesity in the nation. If the government requires children to take classes that require physical activity, abolishes school vending machines, and teaches children about healthy eating, then the amount of children that are obese in the United States will decrease significantly. Obesity is defined as the increase of body fat over time to the point where it can impact health in a negative manner and decrease life expectancy. Since the 1980’s, obesity has increased dramatically in the United States. Children have been greatly impacted in the increase of obesity. This is a major problem as someday these obese children could possibly turn into obese adults. If the population of obese adults and children keeps increasing, than not only will our country have a lot of severely unhealthy people but the cost of health care will increase dramatically.
The health risks linked to obesity include ”heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancers, gallbladder disease and gallstones, osteoarthritis, gout, and sleep apnea”(Miller). Blood pressure is the result of how hard your blood is pushing along the vascular veins and walls. Blood pressure is the result of two forces. The first force is found when blood pumps out of the heart to the arteries that are part of the circulatory system. The second force is found when the heart rests between heart beats. In relation, diabetes is the sugar content in your blood. Obesity has increased the chances of breast cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer and many other diseases. Gallstones are the small, hard deposits found in the gallbladder, a sac-like organ that lies in the abdomen. Osteoarthritis is the deformation of your joints. This can be caused when there is a lot of weight put on for the joints. Gout is a similar form of arthritis. This occurs when uric acid builds up in blood and causes inflammation in the joints. With the consistent eating of fast food, your weight will increase which will eventually make you obese. With obesity comes its many risks and diseases. All of these afflicted diseases occur as a result of being afflicted with
