According to the Endocrine Society, obesity is a complex disease that is associated with a number of comorbidities, increased mortality, and reduced quality of life. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2009–2010 reports that more than 2 in 3 adults are considered to be overweight or obese. More than 1 in 3 adults are considered to be obese. More than 1 in 20 adults are considered to have extreme obesity. About one-third of children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be overweight or obese. More than 1 in 6 children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered to be obese. Adults 20 years of age or older having a BMI of 25 and higher are considered to be overweight, higher than 30 considered obese. BMI stands for body mass index, and it helps to see how much body fat is on your body. …show more content…
This is to ensure that you 're gaining healthy weight and meeting your goal steadily. Just as mentioned above, you have to be careful when weight training and take your time. Not only can you injure your organs, but you can injure your muscles. When weight training, it is important to slowly work your way up and not to push limits. You can tear or sprain muscles working with weights that your body cannot handle. Through this, you also need to be careful of each rep per set, do not push your muscles too far past their limits because you can cause permanent damage.
Cardio and weight training can also be combined to help our bodies with retention. Switching between the two methods can help keep you on the right path, it can also help monitor weight, with cardio, you won’t gain too much and with weight training, you won’t lose too much. Although weight training is primarily a method to gain muscle, many people who use this method also gain fat around that muscle because of the diets they are on. As I stated before, the combination of both methods is a healthy
When completing an exercise a person is expecting results that day, during or post workout. Training is a long-term process that creates noticeable and physical results over a span of weeks, even months and years. Training involves planning with preparation for the training duration and progress towards a goal. The desire to win and be better than the competition is essentially important for professional and collegiate athletes. These athletes take training and preparation for a competition to a new level of determination and commitment. For the last two years, I have been working with the University of Oklahoma’s softball team as their student athletic trainer. I attend every practice, workout, and all of their games. As the student athletic trainer, I help with assessing their injuries, with treatment and rehabilitation of their injuries as well as injury prevention. I have watched these women go through some strenuous workouts and have seen their improvements. Some of the girls have asked about taking CrossFit classes or other workout programs during winter and summer breaks. Our strength coach advised against taking the CrossFit classes that he has not specifically approved. He
There are many ways you can prevent injuries from happening before they do occur. Make sure you lift the right amount of weight to ensure that your body won’t wear down or you won’t injure yourself. Lifting more than you need to will only make your body worse. Using poor form can get you hurt quicker and easier than any other way. Make sure that you are using the correct form even if that means hiring a trainer or having a spotter. Workouts that you know can help because you will know the correct position. Workouts without machinery and weights have a lesser risk of hurting you. Cassidy says, “Years of intense workouts take a toll on your body..... Cartilage wears down and muscles, tendons, and ligaments can become less limber” (1).
Obesity has affected the world in many ways: task forces have been formed to address the issue, people are suffering from health problems due to obesity, and others suffer from psychological and social issues. Nearly two-thirds of the United States population is overweight. There are several ways to determine if a person is obese or overweight. Experts say that a person’s body mass index is the best way to determine an adult’s weight in relation to their height. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m2 is considered normal, adults with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 kg/m2 are considered overweight.
Bodybuilding is a sport that tests both the body and the mind. For thousands of years, people have used it. However, only for a little over a century has it been popular. A big question asked by many in the sport is, how much has bodybuilding really changed from the silver era (the 1940s)? The answer is a lot, since the 1940s many changes have occurred. Some of these are steroid abuse, competition categories and ranks, and money (Robson). Modern-day bodybuilders have incredibly large “stacks” (slang for the steroids they use on their cycle), more opportunities to compete than they did in the 40s and even more ways to market for money. The sport of bodybuilding has been around for thousands of years and has changed more than ever in just
Obesity in the United States continues growing alarmingly. Approximately 66 % of adults and 33 % of children and teenagers in the US are overweight. Obesity is the result of fat accumulated over time due to the lack of a balanced diet and exercise. An adult with a BMI (body mass index) higher than thirty percent is considered obese (Whitney & Rolfes, 2011, pg. 271).
The American Medical Association (AMA) has declared obesity a disease. Obesity means that an individual has too much body weight that could possibly cause a health risk. Having a body-mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher makes an individual morbidly obese. A healthy BMI would be from 20 to 24.9. The United States has one of the highest obesity rates in the world with an estimated of 36% of American adults suffering from it. It is important to not label obesity as a disease because it leads 78 million adults and 12 million children in America into feeling helpless, and takes them away from believing it’s importance as a condition that is the result of eating too much and living sedentary lifestyles.
For building muscles, you must include cardio exercises that do not compromise the growth of muscles. Remember, you don’t need extreme cardio exercises to build muscle. Bodybuilding requires a balance of weight lifting and cardio. Opt for cardio exercises like cycling, swimming, running and walking, which will help in burning fat. These light cardio exercises can stimulate the body’s metabolism and help you lose fat
Obesity is defined as excess body fat and is commonly measured by comparing weight and height. This process is not perfect and does not distinguish between fat and muscle. Measuring obesity in children is even less specific than for adults. Additionally, there are no set guidelines for defining severe obesity in children (Ogden, 2011). For children up to age 19 height and weight are plotted on a sex specific graph call the BMI-for-age 2000 CDC growth charts shown in the image to the right. Children between the 85th and 95th percentile are considered overweight while children above the 95th are obese. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2011), obesity among children and teens has tripled in the United States in the last generation to 12.5 million or 16.9% of the population ages 2-19 years old. For adults the rates are double those of children and adolescents at 73 million or 33.8%.
Image spending 24 hours,12 months and 365 days of just being inactive then BAM! you die. A 2012 study from the England University of Leicester showed that prolonged sitting was also linked to a greater risk of death from all causes. Exercising has become a norm in our society today with things such as gyms opening, vegan diets, and even television programs, but as of early 2018, 80% of adults don't get the recommended amount of exercise. I believe that exercise is important and everyone should participate in trying to improve their health. Just think about it and it might surprise you.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) about “17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese” (Moreno et al., 2013 P.157). “Surveys administered in 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 show that the prevalence of obesity has changed from 6.5% to 19.6% among children 6-11 years old age and from 5.0% to 18.1% for those aged 12-19 years (Moreno et al., 2013 P.157).
CrossFit is everywhere these days. There are multiple deals online trying to entice people to sign up for a one-month trial. New “boxes” are popping up left and right. CrossFit is all over social media, magazines, and television. The question is, is it right for you? The only way to determine whether it’s right for you is to simply give it a try for yourself. Assuming you know nothing about CrossFit, I think it would be beneficial to do a little bit of research before signing up. CrossFit is promoted as “the sport of fitness.” In the world of CrossFit, the training philosophy is high-intensity functional movements that can be constantly varied to meet each individual’s capabilities. There are athletes of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels who
Trevor Linton Mrs.Guthrie Senior Seminar Why crossfit is beneficial Crossfit started in 2000 and since then has became its own genre of working out. Since 2000 crossfit has been gaining popularity at an extremely fast pace. To understand why people chose to do crossfit instead of traditional workouts one must ask “what is crossfit, and what are the pros and cons of crossfit?” Crossfit, created in 2000 is a high-intensity fitness program incorporating elements from several sports and types of exercise.
I believe that fitness has a greater impact on you mentally than it does physically. Fitness releases chemicals that cause you to feel better instantaneously, improving mood for 24 hours. Fitness makes you more confident and improves your self-esteem, key for ridding anxiety and depression. Fitness makes you set goals for yourself, motivating you to improve yourself everyday. It gives you a boost of energy after, making you feel like you can conquer the world, or to just do your homework.
A lot of people can call me insane, but I love working out; I also love nutrition—most of
A lot of people are trying to build muscles in their body by working out. They work out by lifting heavy weights. However, when working out to building muscle, one needs to consume healthy foods and more proteins. After finishing a workout, the muscles in the body have microscopic tears to form in the fiber and connective tissues. This will cause the muscles to be tired and damaged. To repair the muscle, consume healthy foods and more protein. When one get enough foods in the body, the muscles will use the nutrients from the foods consumed and slowly rebuild, resulting in muscles in the body to increase size, strength, and muscle capacity. When I was in grade 9, I started to lift weight and I was new to it. After a few days of working out my body was experiencing any change. I realized that the reason my body was not experiencing change is because of what I was eating. I was not eating much protein and healthy foods. Later I started to eat foods that contain high protein and then I started to experience change, my muscles were getting bigger and stronger. Foods that contain high in protein can help to build muscles such as cottage cheese, chicken breast, whole eggs, canned tuna, etc. So therefore, having enough protein is the main key in order to build
