In America, obesity proves to affect at least one third of the adult population. This itself is substantial but obesity also leads to other diseases that would be detrimental to individuals such as, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. These deaths are the ones that are preventable if people paid greater attention to their nutrition, exercise and their weight. (Sarafino 201). As this is the case people who are overweight or seeing risk factors of obesity should be more careful in their weight control and diet. If one’s BMI is close to 25 or higher they would be considered overweight or obese if over 30. (Sarafino 201). There are many factors that come into play if one is obese; like biological and psychosocial factors. Exercise is one of the most important components when controlling weight. “One of its benefits is that it increases metabolism, thereby helping the body to burn calories.” (Sarafino 209). As obesity is still an issue in our present day, individuals who are more susceptible should be more careful with their nutrient consumption, how they control their weight, and engage in daily physical activity.
The quality of life we live relies heavily on what we eat. For this reason, ensuring that we get the right quality and quantity of nutrients- carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fiber (not a mineral but necessary in digestion) is critical. All of these can be obtain from our diet- the food we eat. However, of late, successfully consuming adequate nutrition seems to be somewhat of a challenge for many university and college students. Obesity is a condition with extra body fat which often starts to form in childhood (Epstein 25). While obesity for some adults can be life-threatening (Epstein 25). It can also form psychosocial problems (Epstein 25). Being obese causes a risk in diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, kidney trouble and more (Epstein 25). Being obese during pregnancy can cause many problems for the mom, and for the baby (Epstein 25). Any of these things could cause many problems either in the future, or in the present (Epstein 25). The worse the eating habits, the harder it is to cure (Epstein 25). The government needs to do more about obesity because obesity rates are rising, many kids are being victims of obesity and they don’t even know it, also Medical Care is taking a big part with the growing obesity rates.

The human body requires the intake of food in order to function properly. The foods that we decide to eat has an effect on the ability to use are mind, are strength, and even how prone we are to getting sick or hurt. Eating to much of the wrong foods, with little or no exercise can cause the silent but deadly epidemic of obesity in children and in teens. In the past, obesity was just known as a condition that only affected adults. In this generation the youths are becoming more prone to obesity. In 1995 an average of 18 million children all around the world was categorized as being overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). In a Childhood Obesity Interventions article it says that 17% (12.5 million) of children in the United States is considered to be obese (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This outrageous number of overweight children in the world is almost tripled in 2010, where 43 million children under 5 are considered to be overweight (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). Another staggering statistic is more than 60% percent of the children that are classified as overweight before they reach puberty, will be overweight as they become adults (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). This leads us to the most stifling fact of there being 2.8 million people in the world that die from being overweight or obese each year (Rabbitt, Aifric, and Imelda Coyne 731). Obesity has impact both on economic and health of the nation. Obesity is the risk factor of serious chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, certain kinds of cancer, and other leading causes of preventable deaths ("Overweight and obesity," 2013). Moreover, obesity continues to be economic burden in terms of medical costs for either public or private payers up to $147 billion per year which increased from 6.5% to 9.1% (Finkelstein et al, 2009). Perhaps if I did more or passed them out at a different location I might have gotten different results. I also only interviewed two people, and a larger sample might have changed my results. Also only observing my roommates shopping might have limited me to what I always eat, other college students might buy healthier foods when they shop. Take a minute now and think about what you eat in an average day and see if you fall into the categories of eating unhealthy with the majority of college students. Next time you buy something to eat take a second and look what’s in it and think to yourself. Should I be eating this? Or is there something healthier that I could be eating?
