In this final paper, I’m going to briefly summarize what I have learned so far in weeks one through four in class. I will also discuss and implement recommendations from my instructor. Next, I will describe the role of nursing informatics and explain how this type of technology in healthcare may benefit or hamper those in leadership. Being leaders in a diverse society is something nurses must embrace. Everyone is a leader in one area or another, and understanding how to utilize time management, recognize and work with various personality types, how to handle conflict, and how to be emotionally intelligent, will enable leaders to excel in every field.

Her recommendation was looking at the transformational theory as a leader and the important characteristics and traits they hold. In week two, my instructor responded to the various forms of power. I learned about the different types of power a productive leader utilizes. She also reiterated the importance of leaders and followers being interdependent, and how their relationship supports the other. In week three, she recommended the importance of getting politically involved as nurses. Joining a profession nursing organization was strongly recommended and after reading through week three, I realized the importance and am eager to make my steps as a nurse to make a difference. In week four, her recommendations were that having both sexes on a team can be a valuable in bridging the gap in communication. Having this type of technology at their fingertips will save a tremendous amount of time when searching for patient information. Having a dashboard that shows critical values and has the ability to make recommendations will enhance the nursing practice (Parker, 2014). This, in turn, will assist those in the leadership position in regards to their staff. Making sure the staff is safely and properly taking care of their patients is a goal to those in leadership. Ways that this technology may hamper those in leadership could be problems with teaching the staff. It is important to properly use this type of technology and there are some that are technologically challenged. The leader would need to take extra time in making sure their staff is well educated and charting properly. This could be time-consuming for some leaders. Reflecting upon this term brings about feelings of joy, excitement, and sadness that this term is soon coming to a close. Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
The nursing career has a growing workforce, spurred on by the high demand for caregivers. The growing need for nurses has caused in influx of new nurses, graduating from school and ready to begin their career. Although there are many different work settings for nurses, one universal aspect of assisting new nurses is nursing leadership. Leaders within nursing are tasked with assisting new nurses as well as those who are veteran nurses, and their role is indispensible. “Health leaders model the behavior expected in the organization” (Ledlow & Stephens, 2018). Susan Eckert, the senior vice-president of nursing and chief nursing executive at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, is a prime example of a nursing leader.
In healthcare profession, leadership is defined as utilization of personal characteristics and experiences to communicate effectively with the patients suffering critical health problems for which there are no specific answers and to direct health care team in developing policies to solve these problems. The nurse leader establishes relationships to encourage others to set and accomplish clinical or administrative goals. I believe that leadership is not something that you are born with, but that has to be learned over time. You learn to become a leader from watching other leaders, and also from personal experience. People should become leaders; so that they can help others do their best. They should not become leaders for the title and power that may come with leadership. Being a leader does not mean you get to boss people around by telling them what to do. The purpose of a leader is to guide others by encouraging, showing them the way, and by challenging them to do the best that they can do. I learned leadership through personal experience. In high school I played sports and had many class projects to do. My senior year was the first time my school had a soccer program, and I along with two other girls was captains. As we all know, when a group of girls come together, the drama comes too. All three of the captains had to work together and show the girls that if we wanted this program to be a success and grow, they had to work together as well. It was hard at first, but when we encouraged everyone, it worked out better than expected in the end. Also, in my business class, we had a lot of projects that were mostly group projects. During the end of the year, we had a project where we had to make up a new product. My partner and I were both seniors and it was a stressful time with finals, SAT scores, graduation, and trying to become honor graduates. We were tired and just did not want to do another project, but our teacher, Mr. Brace, did not give up on us. He showed us what to do, and encouraged us constantly every day. In this reflective essay, I will be using the Driscoll’s model of reflection to talk about how my knowledge of quality nursing care has improved since the commencement of this module. Quality nursing care has helped me develop various nursing strategies that will guide me in my first placement and throughout my career in nursing.
