Reflecting upon this term brings about feelings of joy, excitement, and sadness that this term is soon coming to a close. Throughout this paper I summarize my personal learning throughout the semester, clarify two nursing roles I have assumed throughout the same timeframe, reflect upon my experiences throughout the semester, and will bring about experiences that reflect my personal learning and development in becoming a professional registered nurse.
Summary
By focusing on the extensive understanding of community health nursing and foundational nursing concepts I have been opened up to new perspectives throughout this term. Through concentrating on foundational nursing topics taught in Nursing 285, 287, 288, and 289 I have gained the tools needed to critically reason and examine situations in my life and actively practice and incorporate the knowledge I have learned. Through investigating the CARNA Standards of Nursing Practice (2005) and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics (2008) mentioned in the above section I have learned the great impact and responsibility the role of a Registered Nurse carries. Before this semester I was unaware of the roles a registered nurse assumes in daily practice such as leader and educator, and how much these roles mean in the function of the health care system. Through beginning to take on such roles and understanding the ethics, standards, and many other aspects of nursing, and in specific community health nursing, my thought process has changed from that as an ordinary student to a nursing student who brings the population health approach and upstream thinking into everyday practice. I look forward to bringing these concepts into my further nursing practice and taking on more roles and gaining more skills that will further my development into becoming a registered
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. While gaining experiencing in the nursing field through my clinical settings, I have realized as a nursing student there are areas I need further development in. The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed a foundation for which all nurses are expected to perform their basic duties in order to meet the needs of the society we serve. The ANA “has long been instrumental in the development of three foundational documents for professional nursing; its code of ethics, its scope and standards of practice, ands statement of social policy.” (ANA, 2010, p. 87) The ANA defined nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” and used to create the scope and standards of nursing practice. Throughout this philosophy paper, I have explored what nursing is based on my personal values and beliefs as it relates to the body of work in nursing. I value the importance of holistic nursing and the care of patients being individualized for them and their family. Also, effectively collaborating among health care professionals to ensure quality care for patients. Additionally, the importance of health promotion as one of the main roles of nurses is being a teacher, since promoting health prevents illness and increases the level of health in clients. These principles will serve as a guide for my personal standards of nursing practice.

The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. This reflection is about the patient whom I will call Mrs. D. to protect her confidentiality. Throughout this essay I will be using LEARN model of reflection. I have decided to reflect on the event described in this essay since I believe that it highlights the need for nurses to have effective vital signs ‘assessment skills especially when treating older patients with complex medical diagnoses.
Developing confidence, and competence is a challenge faced by novice nurses (Morrell & Ridgway, 2014). Over the course of my nursing degree developing, and maintaining confidence in my clinical practice has always been a personal challenge. During my preceptorship placement, I have the opportunity to continue to cultivate my confidence, and prepare to begin my practice as an independent graduate nurse. In the reflection, I will discuss how I have gradually become a confident practitioner through my experiences in my clinical placement, and especially those in my preceptorship placement.
Reflection is the thing that we bring to an experience is fundamental to our understanding of what happens. This is impacted by our past, our future and our present world-sees. In nursing, it reflects the attitude, personality, decision-making and ethics when dealing with sick people. A Cherima (2007) point out that reflection journal is a useful tool for promoting reflection and learning process for nurses. In this assignment, I am going to reflect on one of the clinical situations that had happened during my clinical placement at the surgical orthopedic ward. The incident that I am going to reflect is maintaining patient’s safety in preventing risk of fall during the hospitalization. From the literature I learned about the importance of driving the nursing profession towards the community health-care system. There is currently a need for revitalization of the primary health care system as stated in this document. There is a need to change some of the focus of education and training in new nurses in an effort to respond to the health care demands of today and the future, since many students are not going into this field. In addition, nurses already working in community health should begin focusing on current prevention and promotion aspects of health. I plan to apply these ideas in my own nursing practice to this rotation.
