In May of 2017 I will complete my junior year of nursing at Colby-Sawyer College, and I am applying for a summer student extern position on the hematology-oncology unit. Cancer has always in some way been a part of my life, it was always close by until one day it was standing right next to me. When my uncle was diagnosed with cancer it was decided that he would be living with my family when he when through chemotherapy. While caring for my uncle it was difficult because I did not have the skills to help him and did not fully understand cancer. It is my hope to change that by learning everything I can and in turn, provide the care I wish I could have provided to my uncle to other hematology-oncology patients. I knew I wanted to be a nurse sophomore …show more content…
The environment to learn is rich with the staff members and patients a like seeking to further my education either directly or indirectly. This setting of opportunities to learn promotes the medical centers academic devotion to learning. I have complete two semesters on adult medical-surgical units, one on the trauma, orthopedics and plastics unit in Spring 2015 and the other on the neuroscience unit in Fall 2016. Both were amazing experiences that furthered my learning more than I imagined. This semester I am currently in my specialties rotation beginning in pediatric nursing, followed by mental health nursing, and ending with maternal-child nursing. I hope to continue growth as a nursing student and broadening my learning experience on the hematology-oncology unit, thus my preferred clinical area for this externship opportunity. This will help me peruse my future goal to specialize in pediatric hematology-oncology. My second choice would be a medical-surgical floor on 2 or 3 east to further my general knowledge, followed by my third choice, the emergency department to further my quick critical thinking

When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
Essay 1: How will you contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps scholarship program in providing care to underserved communities?
One day I hope to become a Nurse Practitioner giving compassionate and adequate care to those individuals who are less fortunate and are in need of care. My life experiences, educational background, and determination will drive me through what's to come as I prepare myself to gain my BSN and become a Nurse. It is with great pleasure and excitement that I am applying for admission to Colorado Christian University. I never thought after having a family that I would be attending college. I want to show my children that with hard work and a good spirit anything is possible. They look to me for guidance daily as they grow and mature into who they will become both professionally and spiritually. They are the driving life force moving me forward testing myself with every learning experience. After what I have accomplished so far I know that I can go further and complete what I believe will be my impression and imprint on this world. When I am gone I will look back happily at the legacy I have left for my family as well as the persons I will
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
I received news that, I believe no one would ever like to receive. My grandfather of 74 years was diagnosed with Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. It is something about the word cancer itself that makes you feel stuck like there is nothing more than you can do, but that's not true and in my grandfather's case; the nurses seemed to believe otherwise as well. I particularly believe that he will fight his cancer, despite the ongoing battles with radiation. Out of his experience, I have learned the importance of going after what you want in life, fighting, until something gives and you are the one left standing, which parallels with my outlook on nursing
Scholarship is a concept that can mean many different things to many different people. As nursing students, scholarship is a concept that we began developing before we started our formal nursing education, will continue to hone during nursing school, and will utilize every day as professional nurses. Scholarship is not something that comes from a singular source, but rather something that is the product of many different experiences, ideas, and types of knowledge. For nurses, it is the synthesis of knowledge from liberal education, knowledge from a variety of disciplines, and the integration of ways of knowing and thinking in nursing that promote scholarship, which in turn leads to the promotion of safe, quality patient care.
The advanced practice provider is a master’s prepared nurse, engaged in clinical care within an expanded scope of practice beyond that of a Registered Nurse. The expanded clinical scope defines independent licensure beyond that of a Registered Nurse and incorporates developed clinical skills and services outside the framework of the RN. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and other widely accepted sources describe the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse is a mastered prepared nurse who provides direct clinical care in roles such as CNP, CRNA, and CNM.
According to the American Nurses Association, nursing is defined as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nurses have many jobs and responsibilities and wear many different hats. Nurses can perform at many different levels depending on their scope of practice which is defined by the board of nursing in one’s state of residence. It is important as nurses to understand and follow
Having the support and guidance in a graduate nurse program, will allow me to further improve my assessment and clinical skills. I have a strong passion for learning about anatomy and physiology, which I believe the peri-operative department is the perfect environment to expand this knowledge. I love that everyday is different in the peri-operative department. Finally, my last reason for wishing to begin my nursing journey in the peri-operative department is due to my aspirations of volunteering with Mercy Ships. I would love to volunteer with Mercy Ships as they make such a difference in developing countries by providing surgical and health care

They are professional registered nurse with clinical experience in neonatal nursing and also received formal education with supervised clinical experience. Others options I am considering include working as a member of the D.A.R.T. Trauma Team in Hanover, or as a part of the trauma teams at one of the two local hospitals.
Saying that you are a registered nurse is a broad statement. Registered nursing is a job that has many aspects. Nursing is not only a career, but a way to give back to the community by enhancing and maintaining the health of other individuals. Throughout my clinical experiences last year, I witnessed kindness and selflessness among many nurses that have impacted and helped shape my future career choices and life immensely. Throughout this semester, I will assess myself on my nursing skills and will constantly try to strengthen my assessments, communication, clinical judgment and patient safety skills using the Creighton Competency Evaluation Instrument (CCEI, 2014). I believe that my experiences at Mayo will enabled me to find several of my strengths that I will obtained throughout the semester along with finding my weaknesses that I can work on for next semester.
