Peter Bocompani and Gabriel Healy AP Language and Composition Mrs. Wasley 22 Monday 2024 A Not-So-Modest Proposal: Slow Walkers It is a great annoyance to those who walk with a desire, a purpose, when they are hindered in their travels by the pest that is the slow walker. The slow walker, instead of having the common courtesy of walking at a brisk pace, even simply a moderate pace, elects to walk at the pace of a snail, and to even make that statement is disrespectful to the snail. Maybe a comparison to a mosquito would be more justifiable, not in terms of speed, certainly, but in terms of the annoyance they cause the brisk-walking man. Now, this specimen, the slow walker, has long been a nuisance to mankind, a nuisance that every man and woman …show more content…
This tardiness has negatively impacted him on tests before, as, due to arriving late, he was incapable of completing the exam within the allotted time. Experiences such as this are far too common in school, as well as a universal phenomenon. Like my colleague, I myself have encountered such instances in the most inopportune of moments. The worst of these occurrences took place while walking from statistics class to Spanish class, a trek that takes you across the entirety of the building. I set off on the journey determined to get to class in a timely manner, hoping that I would arrive promptly at the bell. However, my hope quickly began to dissipate, as, after just one minute and thirty seconds of walking, I was stuck behind a group of three slow walkers. They were in no hurry to make it to their class, walking without a care in the world, becoming an inconvenience to everyone else in the hallway. I desperately tried to pass them, but my efforts were to no avail, as they were walking towards one of the few classes farther than statistics: biology. Ultimately, I arrived at class two whole minutes late, fuming with …show more content…
By implementing this new system, consisting of a series of shocks and tickets, we will build a strong, able-bodied community of students with drive and determination to be on time to class and ready to learn. This will not only be reflected in increased walking speeds and therefore fewer instances of tardiness, but a stronger academic focus and increased grades throughout the school, as students will now be more focused on arriving to class promptly, on time and ready to learn, than avoiding the plague of slow walkers that fill the hallways. Thus, we conclude our proposal by humbly requesting that all who share a hatred for those that walk at a turtle’s pace advocate for the implementation of our planned system, as we see it as the only fit, feasible solution to this pressing issue. May every school administrator who reads this sympathize with our struggles and work diligently to implement this new, proposed system into our school, as we cannot stand to see this problem and the horrors it
Students should not feel the anxiety of being late to class based on the CSUF parking issues. Tardiness often suggests that students could be lazy or show lack of care for their education. On the other hand, tardiness may be different at a school similar to CSUF. Titan students will quickly learn that they must show up to school an hour early in order to find a parking space, if they are lucky. Due to students not being capable of finding a parking space on time, they are generally tardy to their college courses. In this case, student’s education should not be affected due to parking issues. However, colleges are not as impacted in the summer, therefore, students should not be expected to worry about finding an open location to park. Although, several students may have disagreed that the parking lot tends to be impacted in the summer as well. For example, I attend a summer course for English, having
As I wearily sat in my seat, writing an essay on the importance of electricity in the modern world, I caught myself glancing repeatedly at the clock that was so carefully perched above the teacher’s desk. “Ten minutes, only ten more minutes left until school is over and I get to go home!” I told myself. In most schools, the average school day is about eight hours long. Eight hours of continuously sitting in a chair taking notes during lectures, doing classwork, projects, etc. During these eight hours of school, students deserve a short, outdoor break in which they can isolate themselves from the stress of working all day and just relax. Studies have shown that people who take short breaks throughout the day to do light, outdoor breaks are more productive than those who do not. A short, outdoor break will benefit students due to the fact that students will have time to relax; students will be able to focus more, concentrate, and be more productive; and teachers will have more time to prepare for the next class coming.
Punctuality is another thing that I have learned in NJROTC, but with much hard work did I learn this. We all know that we slip up sometimes and slag around from class to class. Because of this we make ourselves late sometimes, and no one wants to get a tardy, so our instructors offer a healthy alternative. If you are late to class then you have the option of doing push-ups or getting a tardy, now witch would you rather do? Not only does this punishment instill punctuality, but if you are hard headed you can build up incredible upper body strength. Being punctual to a job will allow me to keep it and also impress my bosses.
Finally, having longer passing periods would benefit our health. I have something called patellofemoral pain, so when I walk fast in the halls my knees start to hurt really bad. Also, when you’re rushing to get to your next class you can slam the locker door in a hurry and hurt someone. We never have enough time to go to the bathroom which can lead to health problems in the future. With the four minute passing period we don’t have time to socialize with friends which is important for your mental health. When you’re rushing down the hall you could fall and trip, hurting yourself or someone in the process. These are some of the reasons having a longer passing period would benefit our health.
In this poem about seeing from the shadows, the speaker?s revelations are invariably ironic. What could be a more unpromising object of poetic eloquence than mayflies, those leggy, flimsy, short-lived bugs that one often finds floating in the hulls of rowboats? Yet for Wilbur...
At the point when students need to leave to be somewhere on time, they ordinarily need to include the time that it will take for them to get to their cars, which could be an additional 5-10 minutes. There should be extra parking on grounds made for guests and furthermore for students.
Kain did not disclose details of the alleged assault by Miss Pearce. Miss Pearce did, however, give consent for a child protection medical to be completed but refused to allow him to be accommodated. A child protection medical was undertaken. Kain had scratches on his head and the explanation that Miss Pearce gave was that the cat had scratched Kain’s head. A Police Protection Order was issued and Kain was placed in foster
Day after day, late students are punished or end up in detention due to short passing periods. Having short passing periods can make a student’s grade go down or worse when students are late to class. This can be prevented by extending passing periods to 10 minutes. Although the staff at H.P.M.S may disapprove, but in the long run, they will see the effects of having longer passing periods has on students. Because of the short time of passing periods, students at Happy Place Middle School are petitioning to extend their passing period time to 10 minutes. In short, some of the positive effects are that students can get to class on time, and gives students and teachers time to prepare.
In my chemistry class Ava is there almost everyday and has a really good grade in the class. But one of my other classmates is the opposite, he shows up every other day and his grades are below passing. The act of staying away from school without good reason is called truancy. Truancy is among one of the biggest issues we face at Nebraska City High School and the imposition of harsher consequences, making school more appealing, and offering positive peer influences are some of my solutions to fix this problem.
"I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream. That's my nightmare. Crawling, swiftly, along the edge of a straight…razor…and surviving."
School days starting later would help improve student attendance by a lot! For example, a copious amount of students oversleep which results in lateness to school. However, if school started at least one to two hours later, then the students perhaps will not be late, and as a result, they can...

I ran to my class, but unfortunately I missed my quiz. Similarly, many students miss a few minutes of their classes because they have to go to several parking lots to find a spot. With tight class schedules, the university 's suggestion of parking in Lloyd Noble and then using the bus service is not convenient. Lloyd Noble is 2.0 miles away from the Bizzell Memorial Library (the center of the university). Using the buses at Lloyd Noble is not a good idea because students have to check the schedule of the buses, and they might waste more than 20 minutes of their time waiting for the bus. Moreover, Lloyd Noble buses do not stop; at every bus stop, so students are limited to one stop area. I remember one day my advisor came from Houston to visit me, and he was about one hour late because he said he was struggling with parking. In addition, I have seen shuttles stop at the parking near the Duck Pond (the parking located east of the football stadium) and use it as a drop and pickup area, which makes extra hazards for other car drivers to drive on and cross the roads. All these problems cause delays in students ' schedules. If this situation continues, students will miss more classes, and that might result in a bad performance in the classroom for many. Again, the Lloyd Noble bus services ends at 8p.m., and the text, home page, assumes
While studying or even registering for a class presents a challenge to some college students, the greatest obstacle remains, going to class. Attending college is supposed to signify a new found freedom to make many important choices regarding education without high school mandatory attendance policies. However, students everywhere are coming to the staggering realization that college is not too different from high school. Teachers still take class roll and students are still expected to be at every class on time. What next, hall monitors in the hall? The time has come for action to be taken. Colleges must abolish mandatory student attendance policies for several reasons to be further discussed.
Every teacher must have a set of classroom routines and procedures to maintain order in the classroom. When entering the classroom, students will enter in a quiet manner. They will sit at their assigned desk and have all material ready to begin on required work. Once the bell rings and the door is closed, students will be seated and working. Tardiness is unacceptable and if the student receives more than three unexcused tardies per nine weeks, a referral will be given to the office and a phone call will be made the parent or guardian. Also, students should not be more than three minutes late to class. This will result in an automatic referral to the office.
