Leadership approaches have widely evolved over the past century. Its evolution has undoubtedly shaped its focus and meaning. Different leadership approaches, including trait, behavior, situational, relationship, “new leadership,” and others have all played key roles throughout the years (Northouse, 2009). How to pinpoint one’s view on leadership can be a difficult task, but there are a variety of resources to help classify these views.
Northouse’s Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire is one source that helps identify personal views on leadership, and explores different perceptions associated with leadership. After completing the questionnaire, results determined that I place a strong emphasis in the “process.” These results are congruent with my actual beliefs. According to Northouse, “leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2009).” I believe effective leaders should utilize this approach. I believe that this result is dissimilar to my personal views. What leaders do and how they interact with members in various situations is crucial in my opinion. Leaders typically engage in task and process behaviors. Task behaviors pertain to getting the job done, and achieving the group’s goals. Completing group objectives often seems like the primary focus of a leader, but reaching these goals is impossible without having a well-organized process. Process behaviors are geared toward making people feel comfortable and at ease in situations. People tend to be more engaged when they are more comfortable and feel welcomed. A group member’s sense of welfare strengthens trust and morale (Nothouse, 2009). I believe that viewing leadership as a behavior and as a relationship are directly related.
