Dating exists at Brown, but it is rare compared to the prolificacy of non-dating. Non-dating is a term used to describe a couple that engages in many, if not all, the activities that dating couples do, but are not actually dating. It is couples that regularly hookup, but it ranges in how close they decide to get. Some simply arrange to have sex and once it’s done go on with their schedules until the next meetup while others are together all the time and anyone seeing them would assume they are dating. Non-dating arrangements could be short-term or long-term but they all end in one of two ways; the couple stops seeing each other or starts dating. Millennials are constantly criticized by Baby Boomers and Generations X and Y for being risqué and lacking moral integrity and self-restraint, but we are doing the same things that they did when they were in college, it is just deemed more acceptable by our liberal leaning society. Our parents’ generation in college had casual sex as well but the main difference was the number of available partners. It has not been until recent years that women have truly embraced sexual liberation and felt comfortable enough to thoroughly explore their options before entering an intimate, long-term relationship. Not only that, but there are now more women enrolled in college as well. Nationwide, it is currently estimated that there are more women enrolled and enrolling in college than men. This trend is the complete opposite from our parents’ generation where while women were accepted in colleges they were not as encouraged to enroll. So the change has not been the sexual culture but the mating market.
