The days leading up to the big performance were broiling, demanding, and tremendously perspiration soaked. Day in and day out, students rushed to the field to prepare for the big day. The most intensive of care was given to further better the members of the team. All of this was certainly not an effort that would go unnoticed. Ready or not, they had to play their hearts out on the field come game day. Their activity was known for its brutal and dedicated nature. Theirs was the most intense team of all, the marching band! The day had turned to night, and the sun had descended out of view. With the sun long gone, the stadium lights took its place. Every light was a new sun, a new added pressure. Despite this, with every pressure came great determination and joy. The night air was brisk, and the breeze blew their hair ferociously. Whether their hair was up in a ponytail or just sloppily shoved into their marching hat; they could feel the cool wind seeping under their caps. The wet green grass squished under their feet as they attempted to still tapping toes. It was not overly frosty or too humid that night. The evening air felt fresh, and chilly air filled the students’ lungs. Excitement, anticipation, and nervousness could be felt throughout the stadium. “Drum Majors, are you ready to take the field?” The two girls pranced over to one another, did a resolved yet wildly enthusiastic jig, and saluted each other in sync. They gallivanted over to their podiums and gracefully adventured to the top. After many moments of silence, the drum majors were ready. They swiftly paraded their arms in a strict, rigid, and upright motion. Their arms bent at the elbow, heads slightly up, and they were ready to lead the warriors into battle. Still, those arms remained frozen, anticipating the next move. Then, another abrupt movement of the arms. “Horns up and up!” Suddenly all the instruments were held high in the air. The band vibrated with the sheer intensity of full-fledged assassins in that moment. Except, they were really not quite ready at all. These were still band nerds, and no witty metaphor can disguise that. Despite this, the marching band was still very hardcore.
