A toxic leader is a person that is responsible for individuals within an organizations that abuses his or her leadership by leavings the organization in a worse shape than what he or she found it in. A textbook definition of toxic leadership is “is a combination of self-centered attitudes, motivations, and behaviors that have adverse effects on subordinates, the organization, and mission performance; this leader lacks concern for others and the climate of the organization, which leads to short- and long-term negative effects.” A toxic leader lacks the skills to effectively promote positive change throughout and organization and are stiff and unyielding. They are ineffective people who are not willing to adapt to innovation, new information, or even time changing. Many toxic leader are very intemperate, in say that they lack self- control in certain situations and are followed by people are either too scared to confront them of their deficiencies or are unable to effectively intervene. Toxic leaders expect others to quietly follow them without questioning their decision making. The demeanor of a toxic leader highly favors an individual that in unapproachable; they may appear irritable and do not want to be bothered. They neglect to do a self-assessment; if they did a self-evaluations, their empowerment would not come from criticizing others. Also if they conducted a self-evaluation, they would not set unrealistic expectation for the organization; ones that are unachievable and the organization struggle to fulfill. In the 1965 movie “In Harm’s Way”, Rear Admiral Torrey displayed the traits of a leader throughout the movie. He took care of his SAILORS, when the widower XO onboard his command was having drinking problems because of the manner and circumstances in which his wife died, RADM Torrey took the time to talk to him and gave him advice on doing the right thing, to quit drinking, let go of the past, and move on with his life. Instead of punishing him, RAMD Torrey tried to help him. During battle, RAMD Torrey was a leader by letting his friend CDR Powell know that it was fine to be afraid, that battles are fought by scared men who find the courage and commitment to fight and carryout the mission. RAMD Torrey surrounded himself with SAILORS he could trust, men who would carry out plans in the face of danger and adversity. I was fond of the scene where the Command Duty Officer onboard the cruiser did not slow down to wait for the ship’s CO to catch-up and board, he made a decision to continue at full speed, leaving the harbor during the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack, and thus saving the ship.
One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.

In any discussion of leadership, thoughts immediately begin to turn to examples of leadership gone wrong. These may include leaders who bully, threaten, or allow their mood to affect the environment of the agency (Reed, 2004, p. 67). While it is doubtful that toxic leadership can be removed completely, having a better understanding and being able to identify it can greatly decrease its continuing harmful effects. The experience with my negative leader I will name Mohammad Smith the Authoritarian. I have learned as much from this poor leader as I have from strong leaders. This negative leadership style decreases the motivation of employees because it makes them feel as though they can’t respond with any initiative or creativity. This leader did not like the team to attempt questioning his directives, because he then puts on the defensive front. This leader was worried more about his status and saw his team members as subordinates or lesser people. When working projects with his team, he would tell them what he wanted done and how to accomplish and not discuss and receive advice from them. A bad supervisor is the leading cause of job dissatisfaction with jobs.

I used the collaborative principle of leadership during the freestanding paper tower building challenge. We were given minimal supplies; just paper, scissors and sellotape and we had to construct the highest tower. We were required to spend 10 minutes deciding upon the best strategy and plan before we were allowed to start building. Once the 10 minutes were up, we had to implement the plan through evenly distributed jobs. I tried to be as inclusive as possible and everyone shared an idea, then collectively, we decided upon the best idea. Once we had decided upon one plan, other people chipped in suggesting ways to alter the plan to improve it. For this scenario, collaborative leadership was the best approach. Emotions of a leader are so important in this aspect of leadership. It is through emotions that the leader will be categorized as ‘toxic’ or ‘not toxic.’ It is with no doubt that true leaders will appeal to emotions and as the same time know how to cope with their own emotions and how to perceive or control the emotions of a group. The major fundamental task of a leader is to inspire positive feelings in those he leads. In whichever situation followers always turn their attention to leaders, they expect his reaction towards that particular situation which will act as emotional guideline. The way a leader responds to a situation will give the followers a way of interpreting that event which in turn will make them react emotionally. If a leaders panics, gets annoyed or angry, these emotions will spread to the followers. On the contrary if he shows confidence and optimism to the same situation, his emotions will also be “infectious” (Maxwell, 2002).
Organizations have leaders who are effective and ineffective. Many of us want to be leaders but, do we have what it takes to be effective or are we going to be ineffective. Leaders are people who build their organization and employees up. Ineffective leaders are those who only care about getting a check. This paper will discuss effective and ineffective leaders. The effective and ineffective leaders I have had the pleasure to work with.

Inadequate leadership can be detrimental not only to a team within an organization, but also to the entire organization itself. I believe it is vital for upper management to ensure that their leaders are properly trained and aware of how to handle certain situations and employees. When a leader’s weaknesses are overlooked, large problems occur.
