The experiences I have had working with children have ranged from many things. This includes, babysitting, volunteering, coaching, and working with the general public. I feel like I have a very wide and diverse experience working with children. Through different job opportunities and volunteer work I’ve seen many types of children that are all able to learn but all in different ways. Seeing these children reach different goals, whether it be learning sight words, new math problems, or even learning about their home country. For the past year I have babysat 3 children everyday who were all adopted. Two of the children are from Colombia and one is from Guatemala. I jumped on this opportunity very quickly because I was eager to see how I could impact these children’s lives. Over this year they have taught me more than any other job opportunity could. When they came to the United States they did not know any English. They were thrown right into school and expected to succeed immediately. I also tutor children who need extra help but their parents might not have the time. This is my favorite thing to do because not only are the parents super thankful for the extra hand, it is awesome spending time and building relationships with the kids too. I think the skill that is most important for teaching young kids is patients. I feel I have more patients with kids than most people. I truly don’t mind sitting with them until they get something right, or not blowing up on them when they mess up. My goal is never to destroy a child’s confidence with academics or to make them feel dumb. I have had some teachers who make me feel dumb when I do not understand something and it made me never want to ask another question
