The experiences I have had working with children have ranged from many things. This includes, babysitting, volunteering, coaching, and working with the general public. I feel like I have a very wide and diverse experience working with children. Through different job opportunities and volunteer work I’ve seen many types of children that are all able to learn but all in different ways. Seeing these children reach different goals, whether it be learning sight words, new math problems, or even learning about their home country. For the past year I have babysat 3 children everyday who were all adopted. Two of the children are from Colombia and one is from Guatemala. I jumped on this opportunity very quickly because I was eager to see how I could impact these children’s lives. Over this year they have taught me more than any other job opportunity could. When they came to the United States they did not know any English. They were thrown right into school and expected to succeed immediately. I also tutor children who need extra help but their parents might not have the time. This is my favorite thing to do because not only are the parents super thankful for the extra hand, it is awesome spending time and building relationships with the kids too. I think the skill that is most important for teaching young kids is patients. I feel I have more patients with kids than most people. I truly don’t mind sitting with them until they get something right, or not blowing up on them when they mess up. My goal is never to destroy a child’s confidence with academics or to make them feel dumb. Many individuals, teachers or not, only do what they are asked or expected to do. However, going above and beyond and being able to have greater influence on a child’s life is my goal. I know I will love my job and in this position, children and families will be going through difficult and not normative life events. It is essential to extend further assistance to make each individual feel important. Being someone who can help families understand and make their lives a little bit easier by providing support and encouraging optimal development, I can hopefully make a meaningful impact on a child and/or family. Even though I am aware that there have been great strides forward, especially within the past decade, in the implementation of safer and more constructive methods, in regards to child interviewing practices, I am appalled at the gross negligence of our justice system, in their failure to protect children from the brutal onslaught of such damaging interrogation. Not only does it fail to safeguard a child’s health and well-fare, but it also proves counterproductive in the gathering of reliable testimony, and so therefore does not ultimately serve the constructs of justice, either.
England was a society dominated by children. During the reign of Queen Victoria one out of three of her servants were under the age of fifteen. Child labor was a prominent issue, because there were no systems to ensure the safety of children. During the start of the industrial revolution, there was a “high demand” for labor (Robson 53). Many families moved from rural areas to new, industrialized cities. After a while things weren’t looking as “promising” as they did before (Boone 23). In order to maintain, families had to put almost all of their family members to work. This led to a rise in the number of child labor. Children were “mistreated, underpayed and overworked” (Kincaid 30). Using children to do all of the hard work, the mining companies believed, was the most sensible and efficient way to get the job done. Because the children were a lot smaller, it was easy for them to “maneuver through tight spaces” and on top of that the children demanded little or no pay at all(Boone 43 ). These wages were enough to persuade companies to use children for all sorts of dangerous jobs such as coal mining and chimney sweeps. Children were called to do many other “horrible” jobs, jobs that adults in this era could not bear, just so long as the bills were paid (Robson 18). The working conditions and treatment of young children during this era was horrible and a lot was done to put an end to it.

Volunteering at a children’s crisis treatment facility, volunteering with Special Olympics, coaching children’s sports teams for 10 years and working as a substitute education assistant has increased my understanding of childhood development. Grandmound Elementary School provides me with opportunities to strengthen my leadership and collaboration skills, through teaching art (as a volunteer) to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade and serving as PTA president. I was able to implement many enriching opportunities for students in areas of art, science, and reading. I learned to work as a team, set targets, achieve goals, give and receive guidance. Participating in these activities has confirmed that working with families and particularly children are my purpose.
I was confident, but I was overconfident. I had though that I would be able to take on the responsibility of taking care of my niece over the summer, but the truth had proved me wrong. In my imagination, taking care of a child meant providing him or her with basic needs such as food, shelter and playtime. It had never occurred to me that children are in need of love and care just as much as adults do. As I took on the role of being an aunt, I found myself to be completely lost as to how I should approach my five year old niece. I had never felt that way before. During those three months, I learned one very important lesson. Taking care of a child is time consuming and it is not as simple as a reward and punishment system. A child understands what is happening around them and reacts accordingly. Though they may not think the way adults do, they certainly are not unintelligent as they are full of curiosity and creativity.
A lot of people ask what inspired me to become a special education teacher, and why I am continuing to pursue a career in a field where many unfortunately decide to leave. Child labor has been a big problem ever since the Victorian Era. Many counties worldwide have used and still to this day use child labor. Though there are many laws that have been implemented against using children to work, many countries tend to ignore them. In my paper I will be discussing countries where child labor is present, push to stop child labor, companies that use child labor, the effects on children, and the reasons for child labor.

Some perceive the use of Child Labour to be positive for the ever growing global economy, while many on the other hand argue about the negative effects Child Labour has on children and society in general. According to the International Labour Organziation, Child Labour is "defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity, and that is harmful to physical and mental development"(ILO,p.1). Currently there are about 215 million child labourers worldwide (Canadian Labour Congress,p.1). Within Canadian Mainland Child Labour is considered illegal and a violation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. While the majority of Canadians believe Child Labour to be an epidemic present within second and third world countries, and are "willing to extra for products free of child labour"(Irene Ogrondik, Global News), but unseen by the public it continues in various industries across Canada, especially the Agriculture Industry. These issues of Child Labour in Canada "do not enter mainstream media until a teenager dies"(Craig and Marc Kielburger, p.1). The lack of implementation of laws in various industries and the importation of manufactured goods using child labour, coupled with the communication gap between different levels of government showcase Canada's indirect support for child labour.
I spent most of my time in a first grade classroom. In this classroom I observed the children as well as the teacher and paraprofessional. This classroom had children with special needs and that is why there was a paraprofessional in the classroom for half the day. What I observed in this classroom was how children with special need should be handle and taught. The teachers in this room loves her job and each student in her class. While in the classroom the teacher allowed me to help with children with their work, read to them and help them with anything else that they needed. During this field experience I got to give back to not only a school, but to a community that is very near and dear to my heart.
