I was inspired by the lines from Eleven by Sandra Cisneros,
“ I examined it closely searching for some flaw, some obvious damage. But there was nothing, no imperfection I could see. If there was something wrong it was not evident by the smooth, hard plastic of the outside. All the mistakes would be on the inside, where you couldn’t see, couldn’t reach.”
This paragraph made me realize how rare it is to know what someone has gone through by their apperance. The quote from Eleven also reminded me that the earth is polluted everyday; a simple activity such as drinking bottled water can affect the environment though you can’t see your effect while drinking. I wanted to create an art piece where you could observe mother earth as well
By not cherishing the gift of sight and using it properly, many discoveries are left unfound. In the writing piece, Seeing, Annie Dillard speaks of nature and the small things that we all are unconsciously blind to and not appreciative of. Seeing explores the idea of what it means to truly see things in this world. Annie Dillard’s main point is that we should view the world with less of a meddling eye, so that we are able to capture things that would otherwise go unnoticed. There’s a science to how we view things in nature.
In Eleven, author Sandra Cisneros reveals a theme: Coming of age. Thus, this story is about Rachel expecting to feel eleven but she doesn’t. It makes her feel annoyed and irritated. But, the story takes place at school, in the classroom when Ms. Price claimed that ugly sweater was Rachel’s. The main character, Rachel, has a conflict when the teacher and she had an argument about a sweater that wasn’t hers. The author writes, “when you're eleven, you're also ten, and nine, and eight, and seven, and six, and five, and four, and three, and two, and one ”. This example reveals the theme of this story how Rachel wishes she wasn’t eleven because of that dispute that had in the classroom. She was shocked because she didn’t know what to say or do when
As artwork has become more accepted in popular culture, we begin to see more and more creative artists portray their opinions of what is really going on in today’s society. By the rights granted to us based on the foundation of this country, there is the right to release opinions of how the world is viewed. A major part of this is what goes on in the atmosphere of which we live. The environment plays a vital role in the daily lives of citizens of the world and what happens to our environment in the future will continue to have lasting affects on future generations to come. Through artwork, the advertising industry has been releasing more frequent campaigns of what is going on in the world we live with an aspect of how nature is surviving as people are as well. There is an ongoing relationship that we rely on nature just as nature sometimes would seem to fit into our lives more than we would begin to realize. There are usual two sides to every story and it seems that either one is of nature or one is against nature. This is evident in some aspects of television, movies, advertising, and music.
“The Tri X-31-Pex-Alert- 170 Dim-ethyl Fumarate, and my exceptional blend of VX [a chemical nerve agent] showed great promise, and should have done the trick?”
In “Eleven,” when Mrs.Price gave Rachel the sweater and she said she remembered Rachel wearing it she probably confused her with someone else. She also might find it hard to believe that it is Rachel's because Rachel is so persistent on getting rid of the sweater that Mrs.Price might think she is trying to leave the sweater at school.
Pleasant Corners Public School, opened in 1971, It is a giant brick building, you can't miss it if you are speeding down highway 34, it's like a needle in a haystack, except the needle is 500 000 thousand times bigger. Every morning at 9:05 the irritating bell rings, this is when we get off the bus, get our heavy books and get to our classes. We pull out our blue chairs and we start working on what is shown on the smart board. Most of the things I know to this day like, math, history and writing, I learned here at P.C.P.S. Along with those subjects, I learned how to speak English after I could speak some minor English I met my best friends.
-Who does not remember when Drake dropped his iconic single “Summer Sixteen” and how he started the summer with good vibes. It is actually so funny to me how almost everyone can remember summer ’16 so clearly because it was that iconic. Well at least it was for me. In my culture, every summer all Eritrean soccer teams from different countries all over the world meet in one city in the United States for a week-long tournament to prove who is the best. July 2016, it was in Oakland, California and luckily for my first year attending I had my squad of friends with me. They were Simon, Filmon, Aman, Bana, Senait, Mereb and my older sister, Mical. I have never been on vacation, the type of vacation where you leave your home state, without my parents so I had no idea what this trip
Age may only be a number, but each year comes with experience: experience in the real world, and experience with life. Throughout humanity, children have always wished to be older and to become an adult. Whether the child wants to be older just so they can stay awake later at night, sit in the front seat of the car, or to not go to school, to be a “grown up” is something that every child desires. Oddly enough, the older and wiser adults get, they wish the exact opposite and want to be young and careless again. The character Rachel in Eleven desperately wants to be older and to have “more pennies in a tin Band-Aid box”. Rachel is struggling with accepting her own age and telling her teacher, Mrs. Price, that an ugly old sweater isn’t hers. In the story, Eleven, the author uses the red sweater as a symbol of age by having the main character talk about age and birthdays, showing that students in the room not wanting to claim it, and forcing Rachel to wear the ugly sweater.
Phhhhhh! My brother awoke me to a horrendous fart. I grasped my throat as the intoxicating fumes filled my lungs.
ONE HOUR LATER, at 5:15 in the morning, Kim picked up her cell to call Eugene when he entered carrying a bag of groceries. The strikingly good-looking twenty-six-year old from the east coast grinned as he noticed the scowl on Kim’s face, he had to know something was terribly wrong, but didn’t.
July 11th, 2001 cold rain poured from the sky, through blurred vision as I struggled to stand up from the damp dirt road, and look at the damage around me, I saw a lone silver car quickly approaching. Have you ever gotten a car with a stranger, without thinking of what the consequences could be? The next thing I remembered I was climbing out of that cramped crowded car, followed by my aunt, three cousins, and two siblings. The moment I looked down to wipe the rocky dirt from my skin, was when I realized there was no dirt to wipe off - the rocks were resting within the missing patches of skin that covered the left side of my body from the top of my shoulder to the bottom of my knee.
Ali and Connor gasped, basically jumping out of their seats. Both kids got overwhelmed and started asking multitude of questions, when the mom hushed them. Ali, not being able to contain herself, asked “But how did this happen?”
“Why did they leave?” I wail. Tears stream down my face, and the feeling of being lost fills my body. That one sentence flies around my head, and it’s like someone puts a dvd of my memories in, because they play on repeat inside my mind. I see the times we shared together; Pride Parade, dying hair, Galaxyland. I want to shout “Why can things be the way it should be??” but I don’t.
As mentioned, the novel is a circular narrative that has two different narrators, with three main plot lines. The narrative style and alternating narrators allows Boyden to explore the use of stories and words in many settings and emphasize their power. The novel centres around three main characters, Niska, Elijah Whiskeyjack and Xavier Bird. The first storyline told through the perspective of Niska is her childhood and life. Then Xavier, the second narrator describes his wartime experiences through flashback memories as well as his current struggles to stay alive. However each character tells stories throughout the novel, and each use stories in very different ways that reflect the power
When I was in my adolescences I did an immense amount of changing and growing. During this period in my life many things changed, such as, my appearance, body, feelings, friends, and my self-confidence. I was forming myself through the experiences I had. I made many choices in my adolescences that shaped me into who I am today.
