Pleasant Corners Public School, opened in 1971, It is a giant brick building, you can't miss it if you are speeding down highway 34, it's like a needle in a haystack, except the needle is 500 000 thousand times bigger. Every morning at 9:05 the irritating bell rings, this is when we get off the bus, get our heavy books and get to our classes. We pull out our blue chairs and we start working on what is shown on the smart board. Most of the things I know to this day like, math, history and writing, I learned here at P.C.P.S. Along with those subjects, I learned how to speak English after I could speak some minor English I met my best friends. Recess is a time of freedom, like when you let a dog go free at a park. Some spring afternoons the sun
Children can burn off bottled up energy at recess that they have accumulated while sitting through their teacher’s lessons. Lahey mentions that “studies have found that students who enjoy the benefit of recess are more attentive once they return to class”. This is helpful because the child will be focused on what they are learning instead of fidgeting in their chair. Also, providing breaks to students while they are learning can result in longer attention spans. Recess is a break that recharges the brain and allows elementary students to control their desire to adventure. Young children are easily distracted, so recess regulates this by providing them with their own free time. Students become more self-contained after they return from recess due to their tiredness. This is useful in class because children will be less hyperactive. The absence of recess would not permit students to learn self-control
Sindelar, R. (2004). Recess: Is it needed in the 21st Century? Clearinghouse on Early Education and Parenting, Vol. 18, Issue 1, 1-6.
Recess has been one of the biggest debates of all time. Some wonder if their children are getting enough time on the playground, and others may think they are getting just enough. However, recess is crucial to a child’s development. Allowing for more time at recess in the schools is beneficial for the student’s well being. Students are more likely to have increased social skills, wellness, and focus. Not only is recess cognitively beneficial, but also physically beneficial. Exercise is healthy, and recess is the best time to go out and move around.
If children were asked what their favorite part of the school day is, the majority would answer: recess. Why is this? Is it because recess helps them let off steam, or perhaps to help them settle disputes with other kids. Even though kids love it, elementary schools are starting to remove recess from the daily schedule. School boards believe recess has no value, besides giving youngsters a break. However, scientists have discovered recess helps kids focus better in class, as well as, preventing obesity. Children have an attention span of only twenty minutes. How could they possibly pay attention for seven hours a day with no recess in between? In addition to that, children are not accustomed to physical activity outside of school, so therefore, how are they supposed to stay healthy? With these two counterarguments towards the dismissal of recess, why do elementary schools still refuse to have recess? Because it is proven to help children focus on schoolwork and prevent obesity, all elementary schools should have recess.
Even though these problems exist, recess still has its positive aspects. "A daily break of 15 minutes or more in the school...
Hobbs’ article, “Dallas ISD trustee pushes mandatory recess in elementary schools,” he explains the major advantages that come along with recess. It has become more common for schools to take away recess. The reason being is either that they use this extra time for academics, or they take it away as a punishment. He added, “Numerous studies have discussed the importance of recess in improving social and emotional health and learning”(Hobbs.) Recess is a vital part of a child’s day. Although recess has been a traditional practice in elementary schools, many schools around the United States are starting to reduce or completely take this time away from the kids. Recess contributes many positive attributes to a child’s growth physically and mentally. It challenges not only their social skills, but also their physical kids. It allows them to gain confidence in making friends. It also allows them to get the proper exercise needed
wouldn't student get tired and not pay attention. and doesn't recess hinder growth and maternity and i'm here to say NO! If students have recess during connect they could choose to go to recess or stay and work on due or late assignments or if a student doesn't have all there due work turned in they don't get recess. This way it won't affect learning. Did you know that recess could actually make kids less tired? If kids get recess they get less tired because they get more tolerant to tiredness which will help them in class. And you might say recess hinders growth and maturity it actually helps growth a quote from the icpa states that Everyone benefits from a break. Research dating back to the late 1800s indicates that people learn better and faster when their efforts are distributed, rather than concentrated. That is, work that includes breaks and down time proves more effective than working in long stretches. Because young children don’t tend to process information as effectively as older children (due to the immaturity of their nervous systems and their lack of experience), they benefit the most from taking a break for unstructured
It has been proven that recess increases on-task time. Research has shown that when they study 43 kids that had recess that day, they were more on-task and less fidgety. Some people think that kids need recess to function and others think that it doesn’t help and if anything, they could get injuries. Kids do deserve to have recess at school because it gives kids a brain break and it can keep kids healthy.
I've read a lot of articles that talk about recess being a bad thing for the kids. Articles, Such as in a 2013 article from the U.S. Play Coalition, researchers reported that urban schools with high poverty and minority enrollment tended to have the shortest recesses, with some schools clocking in at less than fifteen minutes of break time per day. Other schools had eliminated recess altogether. While 83% of American students living above poverty level enjoyed recess, only 56% of students below the poverty line did. Some cities, like Atlanta, have eliminated or cut back on recess in elementary school to free more time for instruction. So why cut recess? With stress levels through the roof being put on standardized tests throughout the United States, students need to prepare by spending more time on academics, so does the argument goes. The extra time has to come from somewhere, and recess seems to be the most obvious
Recess is a time in a child’s life that is bound to give them at least a few memories that they will remember forever. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that “recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child’s development and, as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons.” However, some schools are getting rid of or extremely shortening the recess or free period that students are getting during the school day. This should be stopped. Students are starting to get stressed out about school very young. They need recess or a free period so that they get the break they deserve. Recess or a free period for students of all ages is vital for their health and learning abilities.
Do you think we need recess? Have you ever felt the urge to just forget everything and go to recess? When ever your at school and you do something bad or even your friend does something bad. Do your teachers take away your recess? Or do they just let you off with a warning or a detention. Anyways not all schools have recess but they wished to be able to have recess. You should note that they do get out early from school. But they wouldn’t be as focused as others who have recess are. And yes of course all need students need recess because when it comes to the point of sitting for four hours and having to listen to your teachers, including your favorite or even your most hated teacher, we always need a small break at least just to chat or to run around. But mostly just to have a brain break, because if we didn’t get that break we would basically be working like robots. So that's why we need that break, just to loosen up and get refreshed, and all you need is a bit of time to play
When you ask a young student what their favorite part of the school day is, they will most likely say recess. Recess is the time of day that allows the student to create personal relationships and get out some of the energy they have built up throughout the school day. When I was in elementary school, some of my best memories came from the playground. I remember all of the fun times I had with my friends and of all of the games we played. Some educators think that recess is a very important part of the school day while other educators think it is a waste of educational time. Many argue that learning could and still take place during recess while others push for more academic studies. Some think that school is a place for learning and playing
When I was five years old, the word recess was one of my favorite words. Recess automatically meant the best part of day to me, it was time to go outside and play. Recess meant we were going to be let free and have take some time to cooldown our minds from learning. I remember in the later grades of elementary school if we didn't have recess our days we ruined. In 5th grade our teacher always told us that we wouldn’t get recess in middle school, but we would never listen. Recess was my favorite word when I five years old!
During the day students need to burn off energy or they get worked up over the hard work that we're doing. Kids get hyper active in class a lot. Some parents or teachers accuse students of having adhd, but simply it's them being restless. Burning off that extra energy helps kids with their learning or attention in class. Schools that have recess are giving their students the ability to sample or try new sports they haven't played yet, or sports they want to play in high school or middle school.
