Narrative: I am on a basketball team we are called the Havoc. We are mainly out of Aplington-Parkersburg (A.P.), Dike-New Hartford, and Iowa Falls. There are 6 from A.P., 2 from Dike, and 1 from Iowa Falls, and that is me. We have won tournaments in Ames, Des Moines, Cedar Falls, and Waterloo. We go all over the state, for tournaments. Our coach’s names are Andy Luscomb, and Cody Switzer. The guys on my team’s names are Elijah, Sam, Kale, Jayden, Christian, Jake, Benton, Parker, and Me of course.
The way I got on the Havoc was weird, so my parents thought I should play against better competition for basketball to make me better. They thought about having me try out for the All Iowa Attack. The All Iowa Attack is one of the best club teams in the state, they are out of Ames. I went to one

of their practices, and it was rough, (they had recently had a bad tournament that weekend and lost to teams they never should've lost too, so their coach was mad.) There coach’s name was Kade Olsen. My mom knew him because, she was his church teacher when he was in high school, but anyways the 1st thing we did was do full court lay-ups in only 3 dribbles. We did that with both hands. Then we ran down and backs while we had to hold our basketball above our heads, (that tires out your arms.) Then we did layups and every time we missed one it was an extra down and back, (I didn’t miss any so that was good.) We ran some more after that, then we had to sit in a defensive position for 10 minutes without standing up or moving, if we did we had to start the 10 minutes over. Then we ran some more, and for the last 30-60 minutes we scrimmaged. After that practice I was sore especially at school the next day.
I went to another one of these practices, and I did for two weeks. After the two weeks my parents started doing a little math and, for we to do this it would cost them thousands of dollars, because it costs money for the tournaments, the uniform, and gas money, because for every Tuesday, and Thursday. My parents would have to drive me to Ames and, back and food after, and for the tournaments they are all over Iowa, and in surrounding states. Like Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Illinois. Also a lot of the tournaments are 2-3 day tournaments. Which would cost money for a hotel room, and gas money to drive there and back. It could all add up to a very decent amount of money.
So after my parents discussed it they decided that we shouldn’t do it because, it was to expensive. Then like a week after my parents said no, somebody from Aplington Parkersburg called my dad. His name was Cody Switzer. Right after he called my dad, asked me if I wanted to do it right away, and I said “Yes!” I was so excited to play basketball through the summer, that night I started crossing of the days on my calendar for the 1st
practice. When it was the day for my 1st practice I was so happy. I was ready too. After school I had to watch my sister’s. Until my parents got home. Then it was all a waiting game until 5:15. When it hit 5:15 we had to get on the road because, A.P. is roughly 40 minutes away. Simple math puts the time at 5:55. Which is when practice starts. I was jumpy the whole ride there. Until we got there, then I was frozen in place. I could barely walk into A.P.’s high school. I was nervous. As soon as I walked in I was greeted very nicely by my new teammates. My new coaches came over to meet me too. For my 1st Havoc practice we did layups, jump shots, and worked on the defenses that we were going to run, and the offenses that we were going to run. It was a great 1st practice, (not as tiring as the Iowa Attack practice.) I’m glad I went to the Havoc instead because, not to be mean but the Iowa Attack is a lot of just snotty rich kids that think they are so good. The havoc isn’t like that. Instead we are humble. I actually get along with everyone on my team. We are all great friends. That’s how I got onto the Havoc.
Basketball is a great sport for people that like to run because basketball involves running up and down the court.. Some people like basketball because they like the idea of the sport or the competition. Most people have something specific that they like about basketball. For instance: Some people like free throws better than threes. Everyone has a different opinion about the game or perspective of the game that they like or dislike about it.
About a week after my first day we had to go and hang out and play games all day with these people from Jacksonville call the Jacksonville Jaycees. We played a lot of team games that we played like football, handball, and we even played some relay races my team was winning in all of our games. But then for the last event before lunch and before the jaycees had to leave and go back to Jacksonville sorry off topic but the last event was a
Although I wasn’t too good at basketball to begin with, I did have high hopes for our team. I believed my team and I could win conference this year, my last year at Glenside Middle School. We were a distinct group of kids from different cultures and ethnicities, the only thing we shared was a common goal.
I figured that I had grown about five inches since my freshman year and had gotten stronger it might be time to play basketball competitively once more. When November rolled around I was on the varsity team, but unfortunately my basketball skills was not up to par. It was tough at first, because I was a new face on the team, and the guys on the team had a great chemistry that they had built up throughout the years. After a few weeks had rolled by, I realized that I would not be in the rotation.I told myself that the team’s success is more important than my personal desired statistics.I decided to make the most of my role on the team. It was a tradition for the guys who were not in the rotation to contribute to the game in some way, guys did this by preforming stunts after significant plays and momentum shifts in the game in our favor. This was great because the crowd loved and it and more importantly my teammates fed off of the
High school basketball is not only a mental sport, but, also, a communication game. You must be able to communicate very well to play in Morgantown, West Virginia, especially at University High School. To make the team, you have to be basketball knowledgeable, talented, physically fit, and vocal. After four years of playing varsity basketball, the vocal part of the sport has helped me out in the long run.
Once there was a little boy who loved to play sports, although he was never naturally talented at them. He was never the fastest, never the strongest, and most definitely never the most coordinated. He liked to play all sorts of sports; basketball, baseball, soccer, football, and track. But one sport stood above all, and that was basketball. Which was ironic because that was probably the sport he was least naturally talented in. That little boy was me.
While growing up my friends and I played many different sports. The sport we played the most was basketball. 1 Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the United States. As we kept playing the game of basketball we began to take it serious. We practiced on our offense, defense, and playing as a team regularly every day. The more we practiced the better we got at all those things. To master the game of basketball you have to be able to be effective offensively, physically tough defensively, and be willing to be a team player.
Tryouts. Tryouts. Tryouts. Tryouts were in five days for one spot on the varsity basketball lineup. All I could think about twenty four seven was about how I needed to perform on thursday. I was freshman at Calvin Christian high school. If I was able to get on the team I would be breaking Calvin Christian history; never has a freshman been pulled up to varsity before the season. It was sunday afternoon and when most kids are watching football on tv, I had my mom drive me to MVP. MVP is a sports complex in cascade. I had basketball training session at 4:00 with Abdou my trainer.
Ever since I was a little boy, about eight years old or so, I had an extreme passion for the sport of basketball. On weekends, I would wake up in the morning, eat a bowl of frosted flakes or cheerios, put on basketball shorts and then go in my driveway to shoot around. I would be out there for hours just shooting around or playing with some random kids that I would occasionally see walking around my neighborhood. This was satisfaction to me, but even better was playing on multiple public teams and not just playing in my driveway every day. In elementary school, I played in a recreational league, just like almost every other kid who tries out basketball when they were younger. This was fun and all but it was nothing too serious. There were never any practices, it was just one or two unorganized games per week. I never took
My teammates were either not understanding, happy, mad, serious, every practice it was like an emotional rollercoaster. We were all different but shared the same love for one sport we got over our differences and bonded over the love for the game. We scrimmaged each other, worked out together, ate together shared rooms together, and encouraged each other through basketball.
Down two with six seconds to go fatigue had taken it tolls on the players. With little energy left; over time was not an option. I knew I had to go for the win. I walk on the floor confident of my ability that was until the whistle blew quickly turning my confident to butterflies. As I fought to get open I quickly saw the ball coming my way. As I rose for a jump shot time itself began to stay still. An in flesh everything became silent. As I watch the ball leave my hand I envisioned greatness; sure the ball was on its way in I started to celebrate that was until I hear the announcer say my teammate tip in miss shot to win us the game. Mix with emotion I celebrate with my teammate. “Ok guys, we have 24 hours until tip off. Get some rest because this is going to be the biggest game of your life. Let’s bring this championship back to Barton College. Go Bulldogs and Goodnight!” Why few players stay in the lobby to hang out I took it talk upon to work on my game and reflect on the semifinal game that just took place. At basketball games you will notice how there are all sorts of fans attending the game.
But, that was before I met all of you guys. Before I realized that I would have extraordinary friends and teachers. The Hornets team is like one big family. Sometimes we fight, but most of the time we are all friends. We’ve made so many memories together in these short two years.
Can you imagine playing the game of basketball without a three point line? Basketball has constantly changed throughout history and continues to change today. The National Basketball Association has risen in popularity and is now one of America’s more popular sports. Because basketball continues to be a popular sport, a fan should learn about the origin of the NBA, how the game evolved from the late 1940s to the early 2000s, and how the players today impact the way it is played.
Many will see that to succeed in the game you must play along these lines and score in the hoops. Coaches, trainers, and parents will all agree. Like Confucius, the University of Sioux Falls doesn’t believe in the destination, but rather the journey. Guiding kids through the steps of the game would not be like any other program—it would be all about the enjoyment of the game itself. Basketball is an art form, and the paint should be teamwork and a whole lot of fun, which is exactly what USF would bring to their program for the kids. Homeless or well-off, extremely skilled or new to the game, serving the youth of Sioux Falls and the entire community would be an honor by the
