Long ago in class we briefly delved into the use of personality testing in the workplace when Jillian Overstreet gave her presentation on the Myers-Briggs personality test. As a psychology major, I am no stranger to tests like Myers-Briggs because personality tests were definitely part of many syllabi. A personality test is a type of SWOT analysis that enables to employer to assess who the candidate is behind the resume and skills. You get to see more of the behaviors, emotions and attitudes in regards to creativity, maturity, or motivation of the applicants. The employer can assess if the candidate has attributes that the company values or if the threats that accompanies a candidate are not too severe and is something the company can work with. It as create transparency in the sense that you can see what people might be trying to hide. The applicant or whoever chooses to take a personality test gets to understand and conceptualize his or her abilities, a better level of self- awareness and reminder of skills you already have, or learn of other skills to possibly better develop. A personality test can enable the applicant to do a personal SWOT analysis and be aware of their strengths and challenges which can be helpful for interviews. Another useful feature of personality test is that it can match personalities to various possible career paths. This feature can be valuable when searching for the right job, where you enjoy what you are doing. It can make the hunt for the right job shorter and efficient. Having completed the Myers-Briggs Personality Test previously, I was identified as an INTP, which stands for introverted, intuitive, thinking, and perceiving. Accordingly, this personality is often labeled as “The Architect” or “The Logician.” Despite my previous results, I repeated the test as instructed in the assignment. Consequently, based on the outcome of the test, my personality has altered in the past year. Thus, my updated results based on this analysis were, INTJ (introverted, intuitive, thinking, and judging). However, the two personalities are similar, as only one trait seems to have varied. The Myers-Briggs profile was based on the test developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers (“The History of the MTBI assessment”, 2017). Understanding why people do what they do has baffled people for centuries. The Myers-Briggs Personality test has answer a few of these questions. The Myers and Briggs Analysis is a series of questions that when answered are examined and grouped together in order to determine the personalities of those taking this test. This particular test can result in sixteen different outcomes or types of personalities, which is determined by four different categories that judge if you are introverted or extroverted, use your senses or your intuition, your choice to think or use your feelings, and finally if you are judgmental or perceptive. These series of questions are designed to judge our personalities and help us to determine which career pathways we will be most suited for based on our personality traits and abilities to work well with others, which is important for our future decisions.
The bases of this paper will be based on the results that I had obtained when I took the Myers-Briggs personality test. The results that I had obtained was that I was determined to be an ENFJ. I will go into depth about letter and how each represents that a specific aspect of my personality. The results that I had received were not what I had expected, but the more I read about the trait the more I realized how it suited me. I will also talk about the information that I had found useful from the book, Type Talk at Work: How the 16 Personalities Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger, which gave me insight on how to interact with other personality types especially in the work environment. The information that I absorbed from the personality test and from the book will go into use in my personal and work life so that both environments will be cohesive and peaceful.
Personality is useful to distinguish one person from another as everyone possesses different personality. Many personality type theories have been evolved from the time immemorial and great psychologists and philosophers of the world discussed personality in their own understanding and research.
According to Barrick and Mount (2005), one of the benefits of utilizing personality tests in the selection process is that it is helpful in predicting work behaviors. The benefit of measuring the Big Five Personality traits is that it aids in measuring specific job performance measures. These measures include motivation, interpersonal interaction, and the ability to influence others (as cited in Barrick, & Mount, 2005). Additionally, personality tests have the ability to predict various factors related to career success (Barrick, & Mount, 2005).
These types of personality assessments are useful because they can help us see how each of us are different and how we each fit into our roles and responsibilities. Life would not be nearly as functional if we were all the same, and personality assessments can be useful by showing us how we all can work together and see our strengths and weaknesses in a way that can help us improve them.
Throughout the beginning of this semester I have looked at how individuals behave within business organizations. Through various exercises and results, I have found a number of patterns within my behavior and interests. I have become aware what interests me, and a number of skills/abilities I was oblivious I had. This reflection and in class exercises has allowed me to expand my skills, abilities, and behaviors, well fitting them into prospective future employment.
In the vast and detailed world of psychology, there are a variety of different tests you can participate in. For example, you can participate in aptitude, verbal or numerical reasoning, and psychometric tests. These tests assess a variety of different situations such as: behaviors, abilities and intelligence. Personality tests, a common and favored test, measure things such as: behavioral style, opinions, motivators, personal values and career interests. Most often, people complain or disagree with the score of some areas on their personality test; however, there are no right or wrong answers.
The tests help to speed up the process of hiring new staff in businesses. My thoughts prior attempting psychometric tests have changed; I now think they are key when hiring new employees, as having the best employees will lead to a successful business. Having attempted the tests, I now know what I need to improve on to ensure I have the best chances of employability. Personality tests tell a person a lot about why a person is who they have become. I believe that these test if taken truthfully can identify deficiencies that individuals can work on to benefit not only themselves but others in the organizations that they work in. Some models state that it is in human nature and chemicals that decided how a person acts but I believe it is based on life experiences and a personality can change as long as a person knows the deficiencies and works to change them.
