My perception of what it takes to be a good writer has drastically changed through the years. What began as a simple interpretation of the text or topic has since developed into a more conceptual, open-minded, and creative way of thinking and responding. Good writing isn’t strictly limited to that, however. It also includes copious amounts of framework, reading, and research. Now, I am no writing expert myself. I make mistakes, I succumb to the classic case of writer’s block, and I procrastinate among many other problems. By establishing a foundation and mindset for growth and the improvement of your skills as a writer, anyone can follow their process and accomplish their goals. “Framing is a metaphor for describing the lens, or perspective, …show more content…
You might ask yourself, “How can that be? Reading and writing are two completely different skills.” While they are different skills, they both share common connections. To be a good writer, you must be able to read, comprehend, and interpret. There is a variety of ways in which individuals read. There is the style of reading in which you gain next to no knowledge and understanding of the writers desired views. Next, you have the style where you acquire the knowledge and you comprehend the reading, but you fail to apply it to your world and the world around you. Finally, the paragon of reading styles, one who fully digests the reading, can interpret the text with their own words, and applies it towards the betterment of themselves, others, their opinions, and their writing. “Reading necessarily plays a prominent role in the many forms of writing that you do, but not simply as a process of gathering information” (Greene 33). Essentially, to be a good writer, you must be a good reader as well. That involves being able to envision yourself in the writer’s shoes and inquiring about how their experiences shaped them and their writing. By reading into an author’s frame of mind can help you distinguish whether you agree with the layout of their text or their ideas and beliefs in general. It’s an extremely valuable trait to be open-minded while reading, as it can stretch your imagination and help you see new perspectives on topics …show more content…
Reading and research are very much related in terms of becoming a better writer. As a writer, you must read and do research to help clarify your position. By stepping into a world unknown, you have the opportunity to enhance your content knowledge. Gaining intelligence is a key factor when doing research. A lack of informational components to back your statements makes for a very dry and untrustworthy paper. The trust factor increases when readers know you have respectable sources guiding your thoughts and opinions. Like reading, it also magnifies your outlook on certain subjects that were possibly confusing or that you had absolutely no knowledge about. Your readers could possibly be lack luster in the same area you once were, so providing them with that research is essential to their foundation of that topic. I believe there is nothing more suitable than reading a well-informed text. Something that can capture my attention and keep me involved and wondering. I might even do research of my own after reading such. When I have people tell me that my writing kept them engaged and I connected with them on a certain level, or I even answered questions for them, I feel like I accomplished my ultimate goal. To improve your skills as a writer, it is imperative that you establish a process of research to add facts and resources for your own advantage
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
Many people think that reading more can help them to think and develop before writing something. Others might think that they don’t need to read and or write that it can really help them to brainstorm things a lot quicker and to develop their own ideas immediately (right away). The author’s purpose of Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, is to understand the concepts, strategies and understandings of how to always read first and then start something. The importance of this essay is to understand and comprehend our reading and writing skills by brainstorming our ideas and thoughts a lot quicker. In other words, we must always try to read first before we can brainstorm some ideas and to think before we write something. There are many reasons why I chose Stephen King’s essay, Reading to Write, by many ways that reading can help you to comprehend, writing, can help you to evaluate and summarize things after reading a passage, if you read, it can help you to write things better and as you read, it can help you to think and evaluate of what to write about.
Although the greater picture is that reading is fundamental, the two authors have a few different messages that they seek to communicate to their audiences. “The Joy of Reading and Writing” depicts how reading serves as a mechanism to escape the preconceived notions that constrain several groups of people from establishing themselves and achieving success in their lifetimes. “Reading to Write,” on the other hand, offers a valuable advice to aspiring writers. The author suggests that one has to read, read, and read before he or she can become a writer. Moreover, he holds an interesting opinion concerning mediocre writing. He says, “Every book you pick has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (p.221). Although these two essays differ in their contents and messages, the authors use the same rhetorical mode to write their essays. Both are process analyses, meaning that they develop their main argument and provide justification for it step by step. By employing this technique, the two authors create essays that are thoughtful, well supported, and easy to understand. In addition, Alexie and King both add a little personal touch to their writings as they include personal anecdotes. This has the effect of providing support for their arguments. Although the two essays have fairly different messages, the authors make use of anecdotes and structure their writing in a somewhat similar
After reading “Bonehead Writing”, the reader becomes more self conscious and aware of their writing and writing process. This essay just goes to show me that I am not the only writer who not only struggles but, also, dreads writing. It takes a lot to become a good writer, Vetter says that you need to think 40-50 hours working up an idea to make a sentence. He may be acting overreacting but, maybe this statement has some truth to it. You can become a good writer, you just have to have the passion for it.
Writing is a process I’ve grown to despise. Ever since grade school, I’ve had problems trying to express my ideas on paper. My writing process involves thinking about what’s being asked and trying to reflect my thoughts the best way I can on paper, but my thoughts don’t always come out as clear as I want them to be sometimes leaving a question not fully answered. My writing process isn’t a consistent set in stone process, but since being in ENC 1101 I always follow some of the same parameters such as revising my drafts, grammar usage and considering context and audience.
There are various ways writers can evaluate their techniques applied in writing. The genre of writing about writing can be approached in various ways – from a process paper to sharing personal experience. The elements that go into this specific genre include answers to the five most important questions who, what, where, and why they write. Anne Lamott, Junot Diaz, Kent Haruf, and Susan Sontag discuss these ideas in their individual investigations. These authors create different experiences for the reader, but these same themes emerge: fears of failing, personal feelings toward writing, and most importantly personal insight on the importance of writing and what works and does not work in their writing procedures.
Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. To accomplish this we have all had a person to inspire us, to drive us, to get us over the hump of confidence that we need to succeed. Still to be successful we need to count on ourselves to succeed.
Anyone who is doing any type of writing piece has a process. They may not know it but it is there and it exists. It is one’s approach to their piece and how they go about accomplishing it. It has to do with how you write it, how many drafts you do, as well as your revision process if you even have one. My writing process however has room for improvement. A summation of my writing process consist of heavy planning, one draft, and little revisions. Anne Lamott, Shirley Rose, and Kathleen Yancey all drew attention to major points through their writing pieces that support and dispute my writing process. Through their pieces they have found a way to inspire, inform, and entertain me all at the same time while passing along great information that
Writing is a way in which a person can express their thoughts and ideas through the use of words. Everybody has their own writing styles. Some may consider theirs as inspirational while others think of it to be bad. Writing requires a lot of patience and time. In my case, writing has never been my favorite thing to do. I am no Shakespeare and I never will be, writing has always made me feel uncomfortable. In the past, I had always considered writing to be one of the most difficult tasks. I often wrote about topics that were not of my interest. I rarely did any writing out of school or for leisure as most people do. I only wrote because the teacher asked us to. Writing has always been forced onto me. Even though my writing isn't that great, I've felt that I've never been given the freedom to express my voice. Academic writing has always made me anxious. And, anxiety had resulted in my procrastination. Even though I consider writing to be one of the toughest tasks, I've felt that giving myself enough time to think allows me to do better. Silence helps me think beyond horizons. However, the fear of impressing someone, the anxiety and frustration is what makes me a developing writer.
Writing can be a very difficult process for those who do not know how to go about constructing
Recently, I have been writing quite a few essays and papers throughout my college experience. This entails, but not limited to, English, History, and Economics. My style of writing and methods have generally remained the same throughout the process. In this assignment, I will be discussing how I prepare to start a paper, what my thoughts are through the process, and my strengths and weaknesses of what my final drafts look like.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Heidi Estrem says, “...writers use writing to generate knowledge that they didn’t have before.” (Writing is a Knowledge-Making Activity 18). I believe my ability to write without an exact destination
It’s ENC 1101, Not knowing what to expect I entered the room with absolute fear, after all it was my first year of college. Although I’ve never been quite fond of English in the past, I’ve always excelled in the subject. I had yet to work for my grade and no English course I had taken proved to be a challenge through my eyes. I am a huge procrastinator, if not one of the biggest when it comes to assignments. I most likely wrote papers the night before or the day of and still managed to average an “A” on all of them. This bad habit led me to believe that I was cheating myself. Throughout my scholastic years I always had the mentality of asking “what could this class possibly teach me that I didn’t already know?” I believed that my writing skills were perfected down to the very word. I was in for a rude awakening.
First, you must learn to read. Then, you must read to learn. Reading and writing has been and will always be a vital influence in my life. The two articles I read were, “Brandon Sanderson on Why We Still Read Books In the Internet Era,” posted by Emma Chastain and, “I Am Writing Blindly,” by Roger Rosenblatt. These two articles resonated to me because of my love for technology and interest in human psychology. Without my passion of these two topics, I would not be able to be my creative, imaginative self.
It is important to read and study literature because not only is it delightful to read, it liberates us from the confines of our own time, place, socials environments. It breaks us of our habitual ways of thinking, feeling, and looking at the world. Literature satisfies our desires for broader experiences that we might never endure in real life. We can come to understand ourselves and our perspectives through literature by reading and experiencing things that separate us from other people and worlds. Literature written by different people or depicting people from different backgrounds, places, times, experiences, and feelings will give provide some understanding of how others’ lives and worldviews may be different or similar to your own.
