Analyzing Jeannette Vetter's Essay 'Bonehead Writing'

Bonehead SSR In class we were assigned to read an essay titled “Bonehead Writing”. This writing is about a professor who teaches a beginners writing class and the students don't meet the usual standard for college students. The author goes on to say that writing can't be taught because it just isn't enjoyable. Vetter refers to writing as a “wretched craft”. After reading “Bonehead Writing”, the reader becomes more self conscious and aware of their writing and writing process. This essay just goes to show me that I am not the only writer who not only struggles but, also, dreads writing. It takes a lot to become a good writer, Vetter says that you need to think 40-50 hours working up an idea to make a sentence. He may be acting overreacting but, maybe this statement has some truth to it. You can become a good writer, you just have to have the passion for it. …show more content…

He was sarcastic and depending on how you took it he could have seemed rude. He made it a point that your writing may never be considered “perfect”. But, you can improve your writing. If you dig through the satire and sarcasm and listen to Vetter’s message your writing will improve. For example, Vetter says you have to be funny, you can't sound stupid, and you have to have an imagination. If you take these things, make use out of them, and think about different ways you can apply them to your writing process maybe you will see that Vetter had some truth to his sarcastic
