My Writing When I look at myself as a writer, I never knew I could write like this. From grade school to high school I never really looked at myself as a really good writer. I doubted myself whenever a teacher said, “We are beginning another big paper.” I feared writing and never really gave my writing any thought. However, as I got into college, I knew I would be assigned numerous amounts of papers. As I walked in to the English classroom the very first day of college I was scared. I thought I wouldn’t get anywhere because I thought I couldn’t write anything. Giving much thought into the whole writing process and having many people behind me is when I knew I could write something. As my writing developed many signs of weaknesses and strengths showed through. I have many weaknesses as a writer. One weakness in particular would be that I have writer's block. I will be able to begin a paper but never really know where to go with it. When I am writing I tend to get blocked with words to say. I don’t want to not sound academic so I have to sit for a while at my computer and think of words to say. Another weakness I feel I have is that I waste time. I tend to just sit at my computer screen and feel lost. That is a waste of time for me. I need to find a way where I can just sit at my computer and write an entire paper at one time and then revise it. One other weakness I tend to have is that I never get my resources on time. I have a tendency to just get resources off line and never make a trip to the library. But now that I am in college I know I have to make many trips to the library. Aside from the weaknesses that I tend to have, there are a few strengths I am apt to be good at.
The North and South in the years 1800 to 1860 were divided into two different territory which showed their different morale and lifestyle. Both factions conflicting ideas towards the issues affecting the nation. The compromise was made impossible by 1860 due to disagreement over states' rights, intense growth in sectionalism and dispute over the morals of slavery. During the time, the north underwent major social, industrial, and economic changes known as the Antebellum Period. The industrial economy took place in the North while the cotton kingdom took place in the South. The southern states wanted to expand slavery to other countries, while the northern states wanted to limit slavery to the South. In the Election of 1860 when Lincoln was elected, he believed slavery was wrong and made efforts to hold the Union together, Attempts such as the Missouri Compromise of 1820 and the Great Compromise of 1850 to bring reconciliation the North and South were made which led the Tariff/Nullification Controversy. In the early 1800s, the South and North faction made attempts to compromise but f...
Several people have trouble writing college level essays and believe that they are unable to improve their writing skills. In “the Inspired Writer vs. The Real Writer,” Sarah Allen argues how no one is born naturally good at writing. Sarah Allen also states how even professional writers have trouble with the task of writing. Others, such as Lennie Irvin, agree. In Irvin’s article “What is ‘Academic’ Writing?” states how there are misconceptions about writing. Furthermore, Mike Bunn’s article “How to Read Like a Writer” shows ways on how one can improve their writing skills. Allen, Bunn, and Irvin are correct to say how no one is born naturally good writers. Now that we know this, we should find ways to help improve our writing skills, and
In a time of quarreling over concerns in politics, a productive way to end a conflict was to just create a compromise. However, by the year 1860, those sectional tensions were too strong for any sort of settlements to occur. Some compromises, such as the Missouri Compromise, and the Clay's Compromise Tariff was effective in the first place, but eventually failed. Two compromises, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Compromise of 1850 immediately ended in failure.
In the past three months I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the semester comes to an end I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived the first semester but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Some how after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into the papers that I wrote this semester, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas, with the attitude of, if I could just become better in those then I would become a better writer. With help from an awesome teacher and a reliable tutor I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.
The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. Through the countless readings this semester, I saw which writing styles I loved and which didn’t speak to me. Each day of class, I chipped away at creating my identity as a writer, and I’m grateful for the lessons that helped me shape and realize that
My personal strengths are that I read and remember things well from most sources. I can process new information easily which helps with various forms of math and science. However, I also possess several weaknesses. I sometimes shy
Aristotle once said, regarding his principles that a certain character is a tragic hero, "A man cannot become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall." This quotation is an accurate statement regarding the actions between Creon in the beginning of the play, and at the end once he has lost his family. A tragic hero is defined as a character of noble stature, the hero is imperfect allowing the audience to relate to him, as well as the hero’s downfall is caused by his own fate, leading to the punishment exceeding the crime and the character’s realization leading to the fall. The audience experiences a catharsis at the end of the play, which allows the audience feel that society is “right” again. All six of these requirements of a tragic hero are present with the character, Creon, and it presents to readers that Creon is a tragic hero.
The term “tragic hero” was first used by the Greek philosopher Aristotle. Aristotle defined this hero as someone neither better or worse than the average person. Tragic heroes are people with bravery and of a noble position, but they also have an imperfect nature. When tragic heroes show a weakness, usually pride, the audience can relate better to them. This relationship causes stronger and more passionate feelings from the people towards the downfall of the tragic hero. The hero’s punishment will be greater than what is deserved, and the hero must make a self-discovery along the way. Creon makes the decision to punish Antigone for burying her brother after he declared, “Polyneices, I say, is to have no burial: no man is to touch him or say the least prayer for him; he shall lie on the plain, unburied; and the birds and the scavenging dogs can do with him whatever they like.” Creon makes this decision based on his beliefs and thoughts alone, not on the opinions of others under him (too much pride.) This is the error in judgment that Creon made, and the reason for his change in character throughout the story.
I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. Heidi Estrem says, “...writers use writing to generate knowledge that they didn’t have before.” (Writing is a Knowledge-Making Activity 18). I believe my ability to write without an exact destination
Many people enjoy reading about Greek plays. Greek plays are not only interesting stories but also teachings from Ancient Greece. A vital component of these plays is the tragic hero. A tragic hero is a character who is worthy of admiration but has a tragic flaw that eventually leads to his or her downfall. The character later recognizes the flaw and reflects on it. In Antigone, written by Sophocles, the tragic hero of the play was not Antigone, but Creon; Creon was a leader who earned respect, but his tragic flaw pulled him down by causing him to make a biased decision that destroyed his entire life and the people around him.
In Sophocle’s play Antigone, Creon fits all the traits of a tragic hero according to Aristotle’s definition. A tragic hero is a literary character who judges wrongly which creates his or her own downfall. Creon is the new king of Thebes and he will not allow any criminal activity, not even from his family. When Creon’s niece Antigone decides to go against Creon’s law he punishes her by burying her alive in a tomb; by doing so Creon is creating a recipe for disaster. Creon does not realize who else it will affect by putting Antigone to death, nor does he understand that he in turn paved the road to his own downfall. Aristotle has specific traits that define a tragic hero; the main traits that make Creon a tragic hero are peripety, hamartia,
Instigating tension, political conflicts influenced by sectionalism such as the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act increased debates, eventually contributing to the Civil War. The Compromise of 1850, stated that Utah and New Mexico would be decided by popular sovereignty, Texas would give up its land claims in New Mexico, California would be a free state, and there would be a stricter slave law. Though the law partly satisfied the North, the south, however, was not. Senator’s from the South voiced their opinion in worry that,” from the first that the agitation of the subject of slavery would, if not prevented by some timely and effective measure, end in the disunion…The South asks for justice, simple justice, and less she out not to take”(Deverell and White, 440). The belief that the southerners had not gotten what they righteously deserved brought tension, and it became increasingly harder to avoid conflicts by politics. This was caused by the opposing views, which promoted sectionalism because...
The Compromise of 1850 was passed after the Mexican- American war. It was meant to evenly split the territory gained from the war. When California entered as a free state and the balance between free and slave states was unbalanced. Each state in the U.S had voters who would decide on whether or not they were against or for slavery. There were many conflicts that and battles that were fought because of slavery territory and keeping it fair.
Dolan explains, “To this day, the border between North and South Korea remains one of the most heavily militarized in the war.” (104) He also explains that the war was known as the “Never Ending War” because the armistice didn’t solve any problems and conflicts still existed between Communist allies of North Korea and allies of South Korea and the United States. This proved that the US was trying to end the spread of Communism in Asia, yet its effort was not very successful. He concludes his thoughts by explaining that today, South Korea is an ally of the US because it came to the Korean’s defense when it needed support. This is comforting for the US because it realized that it might not have blocked the spread of Communism throughout the war, but knew that Korea, at least, won’t change social views because of the closeness of North Korea. In the article, “Korean War”, Genovese concludes his research by stating, “The war ended, a draw, in 1953. More than 150,000 Americans were killed or wounded.” This explains that the war did not do much for the US and the world to help block the spread of Communism because nothing was gained. The United States hoped it would end the spread of Communism, yet nothing major changed because of this
The topic of school safety is the main focus in Project Citizen. Project Citizen is a way for students in seventh grade to help improve their community. This year, the topic of focus is school safety. To further understand this topic, the students have been looking at websites and videos. To be successful in Project Citizen, the students must work hard, research well, work as a team (for the group part of Project Citizen), and be organized. To be organized, the students created a document where they kept track of the information they needed as well as helpful websites. Also, they had steps to further stay organized. The first step in this process was to identify the problem. In this case that problem is school safety. The next step is to research this problem. This was achieved by going on specific websites. The third step in the process was to evaluate the possible solutions. This was achieved by looking through our research and coming up with ideas for each subtopic. The last step in the process is to develop public policy ideas and pick the best solution. This was done by putting the different policies in different situations to see whic...
