Cause of Chaos
Bloodshed, disunity, and dismay—the effects of the horrific war that divided our country. The Civil War, lasting from 1861-1865, marked a change when the North and South took violent measures in the fight for their beliefs. However, the feud between the North and South began long before the war in the antebellum period. In fact, tension built by almost every action taken by the opposing side, triggering the war. These conflicts could be divided into bigger categories, which prompted violence. Although many events contributed to hostilities, political disagreements and economical differences sparked major disputes, ultimately leading to the Civil War.
Instigating tension, political conflicts influenced by sectionalism such as the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas-Nebraska Act increased debates, eventually contributing to the Civil War. The Compromise of 1850, stated that Utah and New Mexico would be decided by popular sovereignty, Texas would give up its land claims in New Mexico, California would be a free state, and there would be a stricter slave law. Though the law partly satisfied the North, the south, however, was not. Senator’s from the South voiced their opinion in worry that,” from the first that the agitation of the subject of slavery would, if not prevented by some timely and effective measure, end in the disunion…The South asks for justice, simple justice, and less she out not to take”(Deverell and White, 440). The belief that the southerners had not gotten what they righteously deserved brought tension, and it became increasingly harder to avoid conflicts by politics. Since the two’s markets were so distinctive it became hard to please both sides and eventually, these feelings along with growing tensions initiated the Civil War. Overall, in situations like the Industrial Revolution and Tariff of Abominations, the economy caused many feuds and the growing resentment to the other side directed the country to the Civil War.
Prompting controversy and producing tension, political and economic conflicts established escalating the war. Through opposing views on policies emerged sectionalism, and the tension among the citizens of the Union intensified. Along with political disputes, the different economies sourced as another cause of disunity, leaving both sides unpleased and ready to make change. This change killed 214,938 people on the battlefield and forever transformed our nations lifestyle.
