In considering the prompt for Discussion Board 3 prior to reading, I felt I maintained an adequate study routine. Unfortunately, after my analysis was complete, I realized that I am significantly lacking in my ability to study in an effective manner. As a homeschooled student, I think this is an area that my educational experience lacked in. Additionally, having spoken with my mother, she too agreed and has profusely apologized for this deficiency. Prior to gaining a more in depth understanding of proper study skills through the text, mine were quite weak. To be honest, I read my class textbooks while highlighting key factors to include in my notes. Once reading was complete, I would put together an outline of the concepts which I had highlighted. …show more content…
Bearing in mind that many college students are sleep deprived, the number one suggestion I would make is that they develop a firm sleep routine, allowing for freshly gained knowledge to be converted into long lasting intellect (Nevid, 2015, p. 226). Secondly, I would recommend using a variety of mnemonics, such as acronyms, which are formed using the first letters of the words in a chain of terms (Nevid, 2015, p. 237). Additionally, visual imagery may be useful when studying new vocabulary, by visualizing a person, place, or thing that could be easily associated with the term to be recalled (Nevid, 2015, p. 237). Though these methods will aid in memory retention, it is important to focus, write detailed notes to review, and take breaks in between study sessions (Nevid, 2015, pp. 226, 237). Furthermore, I would suggest that students remember that according to Scripture, their bodies are temples, thus they must take care of the vessel they have been given (I Corinthians 6:19, KJV). With this knowledge, they should be driven to focus on a healthy lifestyle, including more than a proper sleep routine. Hence, attention should be given to eating healthy meals and snacks (Nevid, 2015, p. 238). Additionally, reducing stress causing elements and considering methods such as meditation could prove beneficial in increasing the ability to focus (Nevid, 2015, p. 237 ). Lastly, I would ask that everyone find a scripture that aids them in remembering where their strength comes from, “God”. Personally, I hold to Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”
b. ENABLING LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Without the aid of notes and in accordance with the reference MCI 21.35:
After reading our mentors notes and analyzing what we have learned through this term, I have read all assignments that were submitted before our midterm exam. This gave me chance to follow up with how I advanced my writing skills from the beginning. As it was interesting to see how I can point out the missing qualities of these essays, it was nice to see our mentor’s notes justifying my points.
One of my studying techniques is to have one of my family members verbally assess me on the topic of examination based on information in my textbook for the given subject. This compares to what I have just learned because I sometimes alter the location of study during these sessions, such as one time in the dining room and one time in another room of the house. However, I would always stay on one subject for a long time, which may not have been a very good idea. Another studying technique that I used to have was studying the night before or the morning of the exam because I thought (with the influence of a girl from my fifth grade class) that the information would be easy to retain since it was so recently reviewed. This compares to the article since all of the material comes back to me, but is mostly forgotten long after I take the examination. This goes along with the scientific study mentioned in the article that students who had two studying sessions did exceptionally well on a test given right after the sessions, but gradually forgot the material (Carey, 2010). An additional studying condition I have is to do practice problems and tests on the material I will be tested on. This connects to the reading for the reason that I am being exposed to a variety of problems, which, according to the text, is a brilliant way to review. My studying habits will be adjusted to
Growing up, my parents never expected perfection but expected that I try to accomplish my best. The effort I’ve put forth in learning has been reflected in my grades throughout my high school career. I’ve entered myself in vigorous course work such as AP Government and AP English to become well prepared for my college career, all while maintaining a 4.4 grade point average this year. Not only do I engage in AP classes, but up until this year I had no study halls. I wanted my day to be packed full of interesting classes that I would enjoy learning about. My grades and choice of classes prove the effort that I put forth in my learning. Working hard now can only pay off in the future. Learning now creates a well-rounded human being. Working to learn is why I am so dedicated to my studies now.
Sleep: it helps to keep our learning to be consolidate. Students need to have a good night sleep when they have school next day. Also, the next day of school, the student will have more energy and patience to study, to think and to take notes. The attention of the student in class will be strong that will help to restore basics information in his
In the research examined, the methods were similar, involving a type of learning or memory task followed by sleeping or not sleeping, and then recalling the information that was learned. Memory consolidation was operationalized and measured in terms of the recall or performance on a task performed either after sleeping or after being awake. Thus, better performance on the task was considered to represent better memory consolidation. Learning words or sequences and then being tested over them is a typical way to examine recall in these studies. More specifically, some com...
This one being your first year in college, you may have trouble concentrating while you study. Some techniques that can help your concentration are being selective, relaxing, and over learning. Being selective means to make choices about what is most important to learn. When you are studying, you should be able to know what may or may not be on the test, your notes for the week can be helpful. In addition, pay attention to charts, tables, and illustrations that you think may appear on the test. Relaxing is a good technique to use because when you are relaxed you are able to absorb more information. One way to relax is to use a breathing technique (inhale, count from one to ten, and exhale, and count from one to ten, and so on). Over learning can help you fight mental vagueness. When you are struggling in a class, it is best for you to learn more than you need to know about the subject. You can use these techniques every time you are studying or when you cannot concentrate.
One of the most stressful aspects of high school and ultimately college is the ability (or lack thereof) to form good study habits. One may often hear the dramatic tale of a college student staying up all night in order to receive a good grade on his or her test the following morning. This student either completely fails the test, or does really well. These results depend on the students themselves and their ability to study in this manner. In this essay, I will compare and contrast fellow two of the most popular forms of studying—periodic and cramming—in an effort to allow high school students to effectively choose which form may best work for them.
During high school, I did not have to study as hard as I do now that I am in college. Usually, I would be able to study the day before the test and score a hundred percent. Although, occasionally, I would be able to skip a few classes and get the notes from a classmate or of course, resort to guessing. However, now that I am in college, the lectures require much more attentiveness and are more complex: composing more information, meaning that one has to proportion time more responsibly and take an advantage of good study habits. My learning skills have made a complete transformation since I have been in college. I learned new things and I actually enjoy learning new things. Nevertheless, these changes required a lot of self control and practice. Going through these experiences have changed my entire persona about learning such as study habits, being more attentive during classes, and going through greater extents to succeed in certain classes.
A 1976 study conducted by two Indiana University professors proves that assorting a teacher’s lectures and having a 3-5 minute interval would regain the students’ attention. The study was executed long before the era of texting and social networks so the immediate generation of students have even shorter attention and more impaired by distractions. The professors conducted another study in 1985 in which they tested the students’ memory of reminiscing facts from a 20 minute lecture. T...
There are three main things that make up who you are, Caleb. Those three things are your body, your mind, and your soul. Your body is what other people can see and touch. It can be bent or broken, or bruised and abused. You must train your body to do what you want it to do. When you want to study, your body is not going to want to so it may become restless. You must control your body and do what needs to be done anyway. When you control your body you will look and feel healthier. You will be happier and have more energy.
College students must find time in their busy schedules to study. In order to keep up they must do daily assignments. Reading every night helps to prepare for the exams. Taking notes in class and out of class are also necessary. Students also have exams at the end of the semester that require hours of studying. Waiting until the last minute and then cramming it all in is often a final resort. Many students who have kept up just go over and recall the information. All students must find time to study in order to pass.
I am applying to Seoul National University to continue the development of my critical learning skills and to broaden my knowledge base. I feel I am now ready to complete a degree, and understand what is required to function successfully in our environment. I realize that to advance from the world of undergraduate college curriculum to that of an atmosphere of higher education in graduate training, takes much of a prospective graduate student??s time and effort.
An important question to address when attempting to identify effective study strategies and their relationship with academic performance is, “What are study skills?” The term “study skills” can be defined as proficiency in identifying, organizing, memorizing, and using information in order to succeed academically (Proctor, Prevatt, Adams, Hurst, & Petscher, 2006). Activities identified as study skills include “time management, setting appropriate goals, selecting an appropriate study environment, employing appropriate note-taking strategies, concentrating, selecting main ideas, self-testing, organization, and managing anxiety,” (Proctor et al., 2006). When studying, college students employ a variety of these study strategies that they believe
The first thing a person can do to improve their study habits is take better notes. When taking notes you do not have to write down every word the teacher says, if you do that you’re not going to know what's important and what's not important. If you do that you’re going to be studying things that’s not important and that could confuse you and make studying really boring. Write down only the things that you think are important. You can even read ahead in a book and highlight what you think is good information to know. If the teacher says anything more than once, or puts emphasis on something, highlight that it could be on your next test. Good thinking skills are especially important in note taking. Everyone has good thinking skills but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they use them. Good thinking skills can’t be studied they must be built up over...
