It takes a while to get to know yourself before you are able to care for another person. Studying oneself is challenging because it allows reflection of one’s inner self, exposing your strengths, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, interests, habits, defenses, and values. On the same note, it allows a person to be more familiar with the challenges he or she faces, how they might respond to certain situations, and offers an opportunity for learning and growth. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the various pieces of myself. I will consider my personal and professional life as a nurse, what I might employ as my mental model, which may limit my frame of thinking, how it has shaped me so far in my education, and how I relate to others.
The relationship is created to achieve a goal based off the patient's priority needs in which the nurse acts as the leader who guides the relationship to attain the end goal (Videbeck, 2016). The nurse can do so through teaching, answering questions, providing respect and counseling the patient. This type of nurse-patient relationship would be demonstrated in the clinical milieu by the nurse taking the time to notice if there are any changes in a patient's behavior then taking action if there are changes by asking the patient what they are feeling. I have noticed many other demonstrations of therapeutic nurse-patient relationships in the milieu during my clinical experience.
Interpersonal communication within the field of nursing is imperative in all areas to deliver a holistic positive outcome in patient care. Specifically, active listening, questioning with intent and reflective feedback ascertain an understanding of a patient’s health, illness, and healthcare. Active listening allows the patient to convey their concerns and presents the nurse with an understanding of the patient when implementing a personalised care plan. Questioning with intent builds an appreciation of the situation, and reflective feedback promotes improvements to enrich work ethics of the nursing cohort. I think it is important that I clarify my own values to ensure that my care is client-centered. Self- reflection during care is also fundamental as it makes me aware of my actions and whether they are establishing a therapeutic relationship or doing the opposite..
