During my time at Arizona State University, I was given the opportunity to mentor freshman students. This position allowed me to lead incoming freshman that were interested in the School of Life Sciences. I provided them with insight toward succeeding in curricula, assistance in course registration, and information on how to find volunteer, research and work experiences. In the beginning of my mentorship, I was teaching in an authoritative manner, but I wasn’t receiving a positive reaction how I anticipated. Much like Mike, I have had some amazing academic mentors that were not afraid to get down in the trenches with me and ask what I was trying to say. I had Ms. Lewis my freshmen year of high school, she would sit down with me and rip apart my paper and rework it as necessary. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege of taking a U.W. English class that was a seminar format where the instructor would frequently conference with us, and he gave me the tools to continue my education. However, something we all need to remember, especially at PLU, is to not be afraid to be a mentor to someone else. In life, we are all teachers. We tell one another our stories, and by doing that we are teaching them what it is like to look at the world through our lens.
Each semester assigned with two classes, consisting of twenty-five students has provided me the opportunity to assist students with various skills ranging from communication, email etiquette, and most relevant in college, time management. As a peer mentor I’m able to serve as a role model and assist students in reaching their academic success, and this valuable and rewarding opportunity has furthered my determination and interests in working with our youth. Mentoring has allowed me to strengthen my coaching and leadership skills by working with a group of diverse students. This experience has given me new insight, and questions raised by my mentees have helped me to take a critical look at how I was leading my life and what areas I needed
Helping is a social behavior that is important in maintaining a civil society. There are many variables related to why some people help while others do not. Gender is one of them that have been previously examined. Helping someone is providing your best strength in accomplishing a task that can be beneficial to the person. When requesting help from someone most of the time we take the gender into consideration. Based on research by Eagle and Crowley (1986), men are generally more likely to be helpful than women. In an emergency situation where someone preferably a women has a flat tire, a man is most likely to pull over to the side of the road and help (Eagle & Crowley, 1986). I’ve always had a passion for helping others and I love the idea of being considered a dependable person. I enjoy when others come to me to talk about the hardship they are experiencing and being able to provide them with feedback or helpful advice. To do this I learned that you need to have the characteristics of a “people person”. You must be patient, which from my job experience of working in retail and the fast food industry, I would consider myself to be a highly patient person. Since the summer of my senior year in high school, I was confused about the meaning of learning. What do I want to learn, and what could I do with my bachelor degree? So far, it has been two years. I still could not tell the answer to the first question, but, progressively, I know that I could do nothing with my bachelor degree and even with the higher degrees. On the other hand, the knowledge I learned so far is the thing I could rely. However, in some people’s points of view, this is unpractical. For such a long time, I have found few individuals sharing the similar ideas with me. Once, I saw a celebrity, who graduated from Tsinghua University, having a show online. He said that he was extremely disappointed when a college student, who also studies at Tsinghua University, ask him about whether he should take the examination of the public servant or not. From his point of view, as a part of Tsinghua University, one of the best universities in China, how could such a smart student is satisfied with basic needs, rather than cultivating himself. According to my experience, there are lots of people around me are pursuing material benefits. Self-cultivation, thus, is less important.
Coaching and mentoring is a constant process that occurs all throughout a future teacher’s journey. While attending a university, it is common while in the teacher preparation program to undergo several coaching sessions and mentoring periods, which is great! Normally this continues through the first year of teaching, but something happens after that first year. If a relationship isn’t built, encouraged, and made intentional, the coaching stops. For teachers, this is strange. We are taught to constantly coach, encourage, mentor, and teach our students, but when it comes to our peers, those under us, etc., we assume that each teacher has suddenly “made it” as if someone who can make it through their first year is automatically “good to go” and will not encounter any hiccups along the way to becoming a veteran. In some instances, the teaching community is a selfish profession for the fact that you do what needs to be done for you and the students you serve, but not for your peers. You do not share your lessons, ideas, concerns, etc. Some teachers are still under the impression that if they are struggling, they are doing it wrong or they are not a “good” teacher. In today’s society there are so many distractions in students’ lives. They have to deal with family traumas, drugs, extra-curricular activities, making their place in the world, peer pressure, jobs, etc.. When all these things are on someone’s mind it’s often hard to concentrate on school work and rules. I want the students to come to my class with the attitude that it is a place of refuge. I want them to forget about their fulfilled lives and see that learning can be fun and interesting. I want to make them realize that school isn’t just a boring place where the cafeteria food is bad. I want them to be interested by finding something they enjoy doing and maybe they’ll be able to find their places in this world a little better. It is so hard to make students understand how crucial education is. Especially in today’s society. I want to try and raise their self-esteem so they can become the people they want to be. I want to be involved in their lives so maybe if they are having problems at home they can feel like they can come to me for comfort or help. There are a few teachers who I could have gone to for assistance. I now appreciate them more than ever because they made me see hope in people. I want to be like them if not better.
Successful leaders must be skilled in asking their team members questions that will provide useful answers. As stated “If people aren’t giving you helpful answers to your questions, maybe your asking the wrong questions” (Dennis, 2011, para. 1). Questions are essential in keeping a project on track, and are used to help identify any issues or constraints that could affect the outcome of the project. If a leader fails to ask questions they will not know if the project faces any challenges. If the project is facing a challenge, the number one question to ask is “Can we fix it” (Pink, 2010, para. 4). Leadership and management will be unable to help resolve issues if they don’t that they exist. The only way to know if their project is facing any challenges is simply by asking the right questions.
At first, I was very skeptical about the whole concept of an internship. Given the size of Providence, an organization that spans five states and employs over 82,000 people, I felt like a drop of water in a vast ocean. The idea of learning anything in such environment seemed unrealistic, let alone contributing to the organization’s growth. Most of all, I was conflicted by the notion of giving 200 hours of my life away without any sort of monetary compensations. In addition to incurring an implicit and explicit cost during my internship at Providence, after doing calculations I came to a conclusion that I would have made at least $2000 over the course of ten weeks if I were to take a part-time minimum wage job. From the economic feasibility perspective, I was losing money instead of making money. At the time, it seemed a preposterous idea to continue doing what I was doing, but in retrospect, the long-term impact of internship on my future career and personal development is priceless.
This is my first semester in college. Being a new college student, I was very nervous about how college life went about and how I would manage school, work, and raising my child. Thankfully, this class is required for incoming students, or else I never would have thought to take it. Throughout this semester, I have learned more about myself, what I truly value, my personality type, my multiple intelligences, my learning style, and how these are all correlated to my long- term career goal.
A servant leader is a person who makes serving a priority in their life. I grew up volunteering in my community on a regular basis; however, it wasn’t until college that I was able to understand the impact of serving your community. Thanksgiving, my dad a law enforcement officer would volunteer at restaurants serving the homeless so service has always been a part of my life. With that being said, there is a huge difference between being forced to do community service and wanting to serve your community. A lot of times we become so consumed with ourselves and our egos that we forget about those who helped formed who we are today. As humans, we should strive to work and exist together at equilibrium.
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
