I guess I can say I accidentally found my profession of being an educator. What inspired me to choose as an educator was the feeling of being a leader. Initially, I didn’t believe I would like to become as an educator. I wanted to became a physician or a doctor. I was genuinely interested in the field of Chemistry and Biology. I was major in Bio-Chemistry and minor in education from college. However, the responsibilities and financial difficulties confronted my plans.
I have a little sister who I needed to support. She is my only family member in this country. We both came from a divorced family, and I felt obligated because I am her only family member in this country. I am the shoulder for her to climb. I always admire studying pre-medical, but my responsibilities confronted me. I have to employ multiple jobs to support our financial needs. At that time, I began to make other safe choices.

There was a program in college that allowed students to take the courses while getting paid. I desired for a financial opportunity at that time. The program was involved in the process of education. Tuesday at 10:00a.m., I interviewed with Dr. Ann Griffith about becoming my research mentor and working in her lab. As a potential mentor, Dr. Griffith seems to be prefect in compatibility. She has a great personality and seems to really understand my concerns and schedule. I may bond better with her because she is a woman and she understands a lot of the struggles women endure every day, especially working mothers. She has several publications, one for instance: “Metabolic Damage and Premature Thymus Aging Causes by Stromal Catalase Deficiency”. This paper really gives good insight into understanding the lab’s interest and where I may possible fit into the balance. In the course of our meeting, I was better able to assess Dr. Griffith as my potential mentor based on these aspects and other informative topics from our discussion that would personally affect me the most.
As I was preparing to leave high school and look for a career, I had to make an immense decision. I had to decide what field I wanted to pursue, and how to go about it. I knew I wanted to teach because it offered everything I wanted in a profession including, good benefits, decent pay, the chance to work with children, and the chance to eventually coach High School Football. No other career I found can offer all of these advantages.
I focused on education because that is where I felt most qualified and because I enjoyed the idea of working with young children everyday. I was able to find employment in the Mountain Empire Unified School District working as a D/HH teacher’s aid and I work there to this day. Recently, I applied into the San Diego Mesa College Interpreting program. I started out with two classes and decided to see how the semester would go and if I would want to continue or pursue my masters in Deaf Education. Both career options were important to me but as a working single mother, I believed that the best option for me would present itself later on. I enjoyed being back in school and what the courses had to offer but was frustrated with the structure of the program. I felt that with the many things going on in my life, that it was not the path I wanted to take at the time. There are many reasons people decide to enter the teaching field. Some enter because they enjoy working with people or children, others because they like being off during the summer months, and still others because of their love for a particular subject. Although all these reasons are valid, I feel my reasons are much simpler. The bottom line is that I love kids and enjoy working with them. I grew up in a single parent home very poor. I knew I wanted be something that would allow me to make decent money. It was difficult for me to decide if I wanted to teach biology or become a physician assistant. So my advisor said, major in biology education and if you decide to go on and study to become a physician assistant you will be on the right track. I did just that. As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. It’s funny how quickly time flies by it seems like just yesterday I was complaining about writing the first part of this assignment. Looking back at it now, the reasons why I want to become a teacher remain the same. I want to inspire, shape, encourage, and mentor my students. I want to make the kind of impact on each and every single one of them that they will carry on for the rest of their lives. Whether it be simply believing in them, and telling them that I know they are capable of accomplishing anything they want to, or helping them through a tough time. To begin out of the countless professions one has to chose from in the world today I have chosen to become a teacher. I have chosen to become a teacher because I myself am a product of some whom I consider to be the best teachers in the world. As a child in North Carolina I was inspired by a wonderful woman named Mrs. Hollyfield. My interest in teaching started at a young age. I used to watch my teachers in awe as they were able to find new ways to get their students involved and excited to learn. Their enthusiasm to teach was so inspiring. I would often find myself using that same fervor as I grasped each concept. I, then, was able to relay it to my fellow classmates as a peer tutor. To this day, becoming a teacher is a passion that flows through me. However, my enthusiasm and passion are not the only reasons I would be a good teacher. I aspire to see a student’s ability to grasp the knowledge they never before understood. I aspire to see a student succeed at something they never thought they ever could. I aspire to not only support students with academic skills, but also with life lessons about the value of community, pride in one’s own ethnicity, good citizenship, sportsmanship, and more. The first main reason that I have chosen teaching as a profession is because I believe that it’s continuous rewards will help me to lead a happy and fulfilled life. For example, teaching young children is one of the few jobs in which you can give and receive hugs on a daily basis. Children have an innocence and a passion for knowledge that I find amazing and I do not feel complete unless I am around them. Teaching will help provide this fulfillment for me every day. Also, teaching is a job in which it is ok, and even encouraged, to laugh each and every day. I feel that this is important for a person’s well-being and I think that it helps to keep people young and alive. I feel that in many other professions the day-to-day routine would become monotonous and boring, and I do not think that I would live a truly happy and fulfilled life unless I could be around children. I feel that a classroom provides many unique and dynamic opportunities every single day and I find that very appealing. Also, I am a very relationship-oriented person and I feel that I will enjoy building unique relationships with each child. I plan on knowing every child as thoroughly as possible because I feel that this will help me to be better at my job.
As we reminisce and reflect back either on our childhood or academic career, we tend to have that one teacher who was memorable to us in some way - for their sense of humor, their stellar personality, or perhaps having that charisma and charm no other teacher had to make a difficult subject and it 's concepts fun to learn. While knowledge is power, I firmly believe that it is rather the exchange and distribution of knowledge that is power. When one can educate the masses there is no doubt that together we can accomplish great things. Becoming a teacher would mean the opportunity to be able to witness the shaping and molding of the minds of the future generations and the satisfaction knowing that you have helped your students set themselves onto the right path and provide guidance towards the creation of a better tomorrow. My motivation also extended from watching my parents, both my mother and father are employed as primary and secondary teachers in public schools, respectively. Also on my mother’s side her parents were both worked in secondary education. Whilst I didn’t realise the exact power of their influence until recently, I have come to note that it was probably their enthusiasm and love for their job, their constant desire to learn and make a difference in the world through education that has influenced me into choosing my career path. Their roles have also made me realise the importance of teachers and the power they have to help those in need and change lives.
Coming into the teaching profession not knowing a lot, I was able to use previous experience from previous teachers to understand how important it is to understand whether or not students really understand the subject being taught. Having a passion to teacher also improves how much work teachers have to put into to make sure students understand. Growing up, I had the opportunity to experience what it was like to have a teacher was passionate about mathematics. This particular opportunity showed me how much effect he was able to put on his students performance, but most importantly how much effort he had to put into things to see a change in his students work.
