I grew up in a single parent home very poor. I knew I wanted be something that would allow me to make decent money. It was difficult for me to decide if I wanted to teach biology or become a physician assistant. So my advisor said, major in biology education and if you decide to go on and study to become a physician assistant you will be on the right track. I did just that. The one thing I enjoyed along this journey of confusion was being able to spend time in the classrooms at Page High School in Greensboro. It completed my day, to be able to help the students and occasionally give the classroom teacher a break. The true rewards come from their accomplishments. In my class accomplishments are not just the “mastery” of an essential standard, getting an “A” on an assignment nor passing the End of Grade test. They are the times I hear my students using what I have taught them for personal enrichment. It is the times I see in their eyes the look of true compassion and understanding of another culture. I am dually certified in Science and Social Studies. I enthusiastically welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities into my class. From day one of class, I encourage all of my students to prepare for this journey we are about to take and embrace the challenge. Students are asked to commit to hard work, perseverance, and mental stamina and they are assured that the rewards will be plentiful at the end of the school year. I emphasize the importance of recognizing and admitting your weakness so that you can receive the help needed to improve on that particular standard. I share with the students who don’t have a love for science that over course of the year, they will have a change of heart for science because the lessons will be hands on and exciting. The students quickly learn that we are in this together and it isn’t enough for them to get the standard and leave a classmate behind. I encourage them to help one another often. My goal is for each student to master the NC Essential Standards, pass the End of Grade test and be prepared for high school. My passion for people continued through high school, as I stayed involved with youth group. After high school, I continued my education at Azusa Pacific University. I entered into the University undeclared, but I had been strongly considering Social Work as my major due in part to my experiences. Once I made the decision to move forward and select Social Work as my major, everything clicked and I felt as though I was right where I was supposed to be.
But, once I graduate high school, my next step is to attend Tulsa Community College. There were several factors in this decision. Such as, I get to live at home still and continue to save my money. I get to attend for free since I live in Tulsa County and will perform forty hours of community service. Plus, the great thing about community colleges is that they accept anyone, whether they tried or did not try in school, students still have a way to continue their education. Community college allows for students to take the time to figure out what they want to do with their life. I am grateful I was presented with this option to attend Tulsa Community College, otherwise, I might be going to a four-year school, far away from my family, and I might be stuck in a major that I am no longer interested
...as gone through those very same experiences. I arrived to college with many common misconceptions about the so called college experience. Similar to William Dereiewicz’s argument, for me college became this one thing everyone must do to earn more money. To be more successful I had to look towards the “STEM fields – science, technology, engineering, and math” (27). I am personally guilty for falling into this common misconception but have since learned that college is more about experiences. College gives you the necessary skills to function in your chosen major. I came to Montevallo as a Biology major but have now began to question that decision. Looking towards the future I am hopeful that I will adapt to my newfound independence and develop my own set of moral beliefs and similar to my parents provide my future children with better opportunities than the one I had.
Academics has always been an important part of my life. Ever since I was a young child my parents have pushed me to lead good life academically. All throughout grade school I have had decent grades (generally speaking in the nineties or above), and I owe this, at least partly, to my parent's determination to give me the best possible education. I also owe this to my will to be at the top of my academic game. This was naturally quite easy for me up until my senior year of high school. When my senior year came around, there was a lot of pressure on me to make a lot of life changing decisions. When all of this was put on me, the last thing that i wanted to do was change the way i was living. I loved the way my life was, and going away from home to college wasn't something that i felt i was ready to do. Because of this i decided to enroll in Genesee Community College, which is about five minutes away from my house.
Throughout high school and during my undergraduate studies, education was never a top priority for me. Only during the past two years, in the "real world", have I realized the importance of education. I look back at those years and wish I had done more and realized all the potential I had in my hands and not wasted so much time. During my undergraduate career my social activities consumed my life. My friends were not motivated to do well in school so I followed their lead. My grades were low, and I did not even care. After I graduated in 1997 with a Psychology B.A. and lost touch with my old friends and old ways, I have realized that I should have spent more time doing some soul searching and thinking what it was that I wanted to do with my life. I liked Psychology but what I really wanted to do was work with children more closely. I had spent my junior and senior years involved in internships at Head Start and at a High School in a Program for teenaged mothers. I loved my work there. At Head Start I was a Teacher Aid for the pre-school, teaching the children to read, numbers etc. And at the High School I counseled the teenaged mothers, took care of their kids while they went to school and after the school day I tutored them with their homework. After being out of school for a while, I started to miss that. The feeling that I was teaching something those kids, the feeling that I was making a difference. I was determined to find a job in education, with my background in Psychology, how hard could it be? I found work at a residential school for runaways and abused teenaged females. It was great! I was ready to go, I was going to change the world and change those girls lives. What I didn't realize is that will alone does not make me a teacher and that I needed training, a lot of training. I made a lot of mistakes in that job. I got discouraged and decided to forget about working with children, forget teaching and do something else that paid more. So, I got a job as a Secretary, I did that for about two years. Teaching, working with children was always on my mind.
In the reading “Who Goes to College” written by Cecilia Rodriguez Milanes I was able to see myself in her situation. When she was a senior she had no idea what she was going to do her following year, all she knew was that her parents wanted her to attend college. She always wanted to work, she liked being able to provide for herself but her parents always told her that college would come first. She had no clue of how college worked, what classes she would take or what she would do there. After all the confusion she had of what college truly is, she began to love it. I believe that Cecilia Rodriguez chose the right path, even though she was not completely sure of what she wanted to do she always worked hard and never let any obstacle put her
The students in our classrooms, both special education and general education classrooms, require individualized education to reach their full potential. Each child’s potential is different just as each child’s road to reach it is different. Our job as teachers is to be there for the student’s to help them reach their potential through their own unique way.

The reason why I chose to take education as my major in college is because I really enjoyed being with younger children as my past time while being in high school ever since my niece came along on January 19, 2012 and when I began volunteering after school at one of the pre-schools near my home. My instinct at that time is to find out what you want to do as a living based on what you enjoy doing daily. In my setting during this time was to become a teacher and to nurture the minds of children who are growing today.
I could go on at length, discussing all aspects of my praxis as an educator, however, that would lead to a paper of excruciating length. These aspects of my teaching pedagogy that are delivered in this praxis statement are those that I feel strongest about upholding. It is important for educators to value their students and the perspectives and cultures they bring to the classroom. Student-centered education is what I find to be the key to great teaching, and overall, is the greatest way to allow students to value and grow through their own self-exploratory and self-directed education. Valuing and appreciating each of your students is what makes teaching such an enlightening, uplifting profession.

In the real world, you do earn rewards for your accomplishments and achievements. For instance, a college student who earns all A’s will be rewarded by being placed on the Dean’s list. On the other hand, a college student may not be proactive, self-controlled, or responsible and make D’s and F’s leads to the consequence of having a low GPA and retaking classes. Credit should most definitely be given when it is due. A part of motivation is encouragement in telling students how well they accomplished any task and sometimes rewarding the entire class for all good things and effort they put forth. My ultimate goal for my Classroom Management Plan is to model self-discipline by teaching it through my daily actions so that students may be able to self-manage themselves accordingly. I have a broad range of accomplishments. Most of my accomplishments have been in several subjects such as mathematics, science, and even tennis. We shouldn't judge a person on how educated they are based only on test scores. The most educated person may not be the most suitable person to teach children. I may lack the test scores, however, I do not lack the passion and motivation needed to be a great teacher. If we cannot celebrate small successes, the final outcome is less weighted.
I chose to major in elementary education because of my love for children . I enjoy working with children, I feel that they have an entirely different way of looking at the world. I want to make a difference in the lives of children. I want to improve their lives, but at the same time make it fun and interesting instead of dull and tedious. Children naturally have a short attention span. I have worked in an elementary school for four years, and I have learned that to keep children entertained but at the same time teaching them.
