My Literacy Journey

Literacy is one of the most powerful and important skills one can have. The ability to understand information presented in different forms of media allows one to see their environment more clearly and wholly. I am proud of my literacy and grateful that I have the ability to read, write, and comprehend texts. I realize that I am extremely fortunate to be literate, as many people don’t have that privilege. Most of the credit for my literacy goes to my family. My literacy journey began when I was very young, and my family surrounded me with literature. I read every night and was constantly exposed to music and television. Because I was subjected to a vast amount of literature in multiple forms, my literacy flourished. Even when I was too young to read by myself, my parents would read me stories nightly. When I wasn’t entangled with a book, I would watch game shows on television. I could usually be found yelling the answers to Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune. Most of the time, I had the wrong answer, but at least I was attempting to learn something. I gained knowledge of many new facts and phrases, regardless of how useful they would prove to be. Literacy was all around in my life, even when I didn’t realize it. Though there were many times where I did not care to expand my literacy and reading skills, my family pushed me to care. During the summers, I was required to read at least one hour per day. I would much rather have played outside or watched television. The books I read were usually at a much higher level than the books I was used to reading at school. My parents would ask me questions about the book I was reading to ensure I was actually paying attention. I often resented reading these books, but I pushed through and eventually understood why I was forced to read them. My ability to comprehend large vocabulary was certainly increased by these more advanced
