Reading and writing is a vital part of life, as Dr.Seuss stated, “The more you read, the more you will know”. Without the development of reading and writing, the World wouldn’t contain the amount of knowledge and success that it has today. Despite the strong impact of reading and writing in the World, all individuals face different journeys with them, some gain a strong interest for them and others lack the interest. My journey with reading and writing was something quite extraordinary, in fact, it developed in five stages: early childhood, elementary school, junior high/middle school, high school, and college. AR points are a type of system that awards you for reading books. It monitors your reading and makes sure that you maintain a weekly reading routine. In 1st grade, my reading highly developed due to these AR points. I wanted to be the student with the most AR points in my class. Due to my early interest in books and help in daycare, it was easier for me and I was advanced in my class. Everyday during class, I asked to go to the library and I would sit in there for hours. At A.P. Beutel, my elementary school, there wasn’t a variety of books so I would bring my own books from the public library and read them in there. At the yearly book fair, I would buy as many books as I can, one time I spent 50 dollars. Towards third and fourth grade, I became addicted to Junie B. Jones and The Magic Tree House books. My interest in books was strong and I continuously impressed my parents and teachers with a passion for reading. Despite my obsession for reading, I very much began to dislike writing. Writing was fun in 1st and 2nd grade when I could write about anything, however, in 3rd and 4th grade, it became more of a chore. Teachers didn’t allow free write and STAAR writing tests began. In the 4th grade, we were made to take the writing STAAR test. The STAAR test forces you to write an essay on a certain topic, which it very much disliked. I thought that I would begin to enjoy reading and writing again, however, nothing had changed. Essay writing got harder and longer. They were demanded twice a week and graded based on the instructor’s opinion, not on a rubric. Also, hard projects were made on long, confusing books. For example, over the winter break, my teacher forced my class to read a 400 page book. There were a few books on the list that she made us choose from, and I chose Oedipus Rex. Over the winter break, I was very busy with college classes and state soccer tournaments that I didn’t have time to properly read my book. On the last two days of winter break, I finally rushed through and read Oedipus Rex. Once I got back to school, my teacher gave us one week to create a 30 minute presentation of our book. We weren’t allowed to use slides, we had to make a google site, and 30 minutes was the minimum that you had to present, in front of the class. After this project, I completely lost all interest for reading and high school sports made it worse.
